Walsall school meals in price rise fear
Friday 28th October 2011, 11:29AM BST.
School meal prices in Walsall could rise after council bosses announced plans to scrap funding of £79,000 a term, it emerged today.
The cash-strapped local authority has unveiled proposals to axe the subsidy of school meals to 80 primary and secondary schools from next year.
Schools which currently pay towards the council-run Walsall Catering Service for their meals would then have the choice of continuing with the service and paying the shortfall, or seeking a private operator.
Bosses insist the full allocation is not spent on catering for schools, but confirmed that it is considering stopping the subsidy altogether, prompting fears that the funding gap could end up coming out of parents’ pockets.
