Student loans fail to arrive for term start

Students at universities in the Black Country and Staffordshire have been forced to take emergency payments after their student loans failed to arrive for the start of term, it emerged today.

Wolverhampton University has had to provide funds totalling £15,000 to 60 students since the start the new academic year earlier this month. Meanwhile, Staffordshire University has handed emergency funding to 22 students.

Students today criticised the process of applying for loans, describing it as “a nightmare”.

Loans are administered by Student Finance England and paid by the Student Loans Company, which provides loans and grants to more than one million students in the UK every year.

The organisation also collects repayments from three million people who are no longer in education.

Wolverhampton University war studies and politics student Charlotte Hale, aged 21, from Shareshill, said she knew of numerous students who had had problems with loans.

“The issue is you can only get in touch with Student Finance England on the phone,” said Miss Hale.

“They need to be more accessible. Better support needs to be in place.”

Miss Hale said her 19-year-old sister, Natasha, who is a modern world history student at Central Lancashire University, had had loan issues. “Hers wasn’t paid on time which meant she couldn’t pay the rent.”

Miss Hale said the process of applying for a loan could take longer if students had a disability or if they had children, because of extra forms.

Wolverhampton University spokeswoman Emma Pugh said the institution had processes in place to ensure students could receive support when facing financial difficulties.

Breea Keenan, from Student Finance England, said: “The majority of students from England have been paid or are due to receive payment.”

Nightmare is a very appropriate description for us! We applied in May and have been told we are still two weeks away from our application’s review date; my daughter started University last Friday.
The Student Finance call centre staff are very polite and try to be helpful but the processes they are working to are appalling. Every letter or form I’ve sent has neded to be followed by a call from me – they appear to have no process for contacting students or parents who cannot be expected to mind-read their requirements.

Student Finance England are an absolute joke. I am second year Part-Time student at Wolverhampton. I applied for my loan in September and didnt get paid until the following July. The staff on the phone constantly gave poor incorrect advice, and I am still waiting to hear back from the complaint I made. The customer service from them is non-existent. The staff are incompetent and dont know the advice they are giving, and there is so much pointless bureaucracy involved with all the forms that need to be filled in.

It’s so sad to see that things have not moved further along than when I was at Uni 10 years ago and was having exactly the same problems with student finance. In this modern age they should be making themselves more accessible.Starting Uni is an exciting time but it’s also stressful and often the first time the student is managing their own money and bills.Having no money for that vital first week would be soul destroying. Sadly though this seems to be occurring every year with no sign of student finance trying to make things better.

I agree what a nightmare Student finance is, whats even worse is unite student living!
getting students to sign agreements for rent to be paid on a certain dates, when they do not know what finance they will get.

my son moved to London to start his degree and to move into his digs within one day he was served a section 8 all because student finance had not paid him his money.

He still has not been paid
What a great way to start a degree i dont think!

We keep completing the online forms for student finance only for them to keep being rejected due to a ‘system error’ at student finance end. This has been ongoing to a couple of weeks now. Speak to student finance on the phone and they tell you to get parents to complete 18 page form each! Parents not happy about this as have already given info online. Student finance system is a diabolical farce! No managers ever available to speak to when you call. GRrrrrrrrr

The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing with Student Finance England.

This problem has spread further afield with many other university students not yet receiving their funding.
