The leader of Sandwell Council is demanding to know if Education Secretary Michael Gove discussed axeing Sandwell’s £138 million school improvement programme in private email communications.

He also wants to know when the borough will hear if the scheme will be re-instated.

Council leader Councillor Darren Cooper asked the authority’s lawyers to investigate how Mr Gove MP came to his controversial decision to cut the scheme at the last minute, last year.

Solicitors are asking to see the results of email searches between Michael Gove and his advisers by October 19. Councillor Cooper has also asked when to expect the Government’s final decision on funding under the Building Schools for the Future scheme, after launching a fresh challenge this year.

It comes as Perryfields High School, in Oldbury, is suffering chronic overcrowding.
