Wolverhampton school rebuilding project is revised
Tuesday 26th July 2011, 10:30AM BST.
The final phases of a £270 million scheme to refurbish or rebuild Wolverhampton’s secondary schools could be merged amid concerns that the project would otherwise run six months behind schedule.
The project, involving all 25 secondary schools, is now back on track after council bosses were forced to revise proposals to cut £30m off the original £300m cost in the wake of huge budget cuts.
Other areas like Sandwell saw their rebuilding projects scrapped altogether. Work has already begun on several schools and five more schools are being refurbished in phase two of the scheme.
The remaining schools would have been worked on within third and fourth phases but the cost cutting review last November would have caused a potential delay of around six months.
A submission to change the phasing of the programme will now be made to the Government’s Partnerships for Schools, which is in charge of the national school rebuilding programme. If this is granted all the work should be completed by September 2014.
