Staff and pupils at a Wednesbury school are celebrating after inspectors told them they had made outstanding progress. Ofsted officers undertook an interim inspection at Wodensborough Community Technology College.

The Hydes Road school was only rated satisfactory in September 2009. In that report staff were asked to raise the quality of teaching and learning by improving day-to-day marking, planning lessons that consistently engage and challenge students, and developing the role of middle managers.

In a letter to headteacher Ken Ellis, inspector Michelle Parker said the school had made outstanding progress, both in making improvements and demonstrating a better capacity for sustained improvement.

She noted that pupils attainment was low but strongly improving.

And she said in 2010, 80 per cent gained five GCSEs with A* to C grades – a significant improvement on 54 per cent in the previous year.
