A former school in Wolverhampton that was badly damaged in an arson attack weeks ago is being torn down — as it emerged the site will be sold off by the council to raise much-needed cash to make savings.

Work has started to strip fittings from Danesmore Park Primary School in Wolverhampton before bulldozers move in.

The city council confirmed today the school grounds, as well as the former Coppice Close Community Centre next to them, would be put on the market.

Up to 40 per cent of the school, which shut in December 2007, was destroyed when the building was set alight in October last year.

Sections of the roof caved in due to the ferocity of the flames as residents flocked onto the streets to watch.
Demolition is expected to be complete by May.

Council spokesman Tim Clark said: “The demolition contract for Danesmore School has commenced and is due to be completed by May 2011. The site will be left secure, clear and free of all buildings.

“The site of the school building and the adjoining site of the former Coppice Close Community Centre have been declared surplus to the requirements of the council and will be marketed for sale as a complete site in due course.”

The blaze came just weeks after arson attacks at two other schools.
