More than 800 people took part in the Penkridge Fun Run yesterday morning – a record number of participants.

Organisers say it was the best ever with up to 3,000 people alone watching.

Runners young and old started outside the village's Haling Dene Centre before going on a 2.5mile stretch of the village.

As well as runners the event saw a number of stalls set up in the village with a barbecue, licensed bar and live music throughout making it a day for the family to enjoy.

The event each year is organised by Penkridge Round Table. It raises funds for different charities and projects throughout a number of events.

The amount raised is still to be totalled but Tim Rowlands, vice chairman of Penkridge Round Table, said he hoped it to be the highest ever.

"This year's fun run has certainly been one to remember having attracted a record number of participants," he said.

"To have had more than 800 take part has been nothing sort of brilliant.

"It's been a fantastic day and the Penkridge community can feel very proud.

"Many have come to us and gave us rally positive feedback which has made it even more special.

"I and everyone here at the Round Table would like to thank everyone who came along and helped make this a special day."
