Now, a sculptor is calling on people to try their hand at the traditional skill of chain-making.

Luke Perry volunteers at the Mushroom Green Chain Shop in Dudley Wood, where visitors are treated to a display of fire and sparks.

Now he wants people to try it out themselves in a bid to keep the industry's heritage alive.

Mr Perry, aged 31, said: "During the demonstrations we basically use a great big fire and make chains the same way it has been being done for 200 years.

"The metal is heated until it is sparking hot and then there is the welding – so there is a lot of sparks and excitement. We want as many people as possible to come and use the facility.

"It is a great way to get in touch with history which is really close to a lot of people's lives.

"Chronologically the industry is not that far back."

Mr Perry was inspired to learn how to make chains after visiting the chain shop off Quarry Road as a child.

As an adult he is part of a team of volunteers who have kept the shop going.

He also has personal ties to the chain-making industry with many generations of his family having been involved.

He believes the shop to be the only chain-making operation in the world which remains in its original location.

During display sessions he discusses the history of chain-making in a relaxed atmosphere.

He added: "This month we had a girl who was here with her family. They have been coming for a few years.

"Each time they make a link and every year they join another on to see how they are getting better.

"It is a very tactile way to experience something not many get to have a go at. Because we are small I can spend time with people."

Public sessions run on the second Sunday of each month from April to October between 2:30-5pm. It is free to take part and hot drinks are available.
