Mods turn on the style at charity night

Mod and scooter enthusiasts will descend on a charity event this week in the aid of people suffering with mental illnesses.

The event, called A Space, will be held at the Bradmore Social Club, Wolverhampton, on April 4 at 7.30pm.

It was organised by Scott Townsend, a mod enthusiast from Bradmore, to raise funds for the charity Rethink Mental Illness.

Scott, aged 48, said: "There is a lot stigma around mental illnesses, which are not widely recognised as being illnesses.

"There needs to be more support out there for people are suffering, I have lost friends through suicide to depression and anxiety.

"I hope to raise £1500 for Rethink Mental Illnesses, who support and care for people suffering with mental illnesses."

'A Space' has already sold out but the Dad of two is hoping the event will spread awareness.

His wife Katherine, aged 41, has set up a JustGiving page to raise money for the charity.

Katherine, a fellow mod enthusiast, said:

"Seeing a therapist just once could save a life. There should be a 24 hour helpline to see a therapist but waiting lists are up to six months for some people, which is too long.

"Rethink Mental Illness is a charity that believes a better life is possible for millions of people affected by mental illness.

"The government and people in the community need to start recognising this as an actual illness as it can be physical as well as mental."

The couple, along with their two friends Jodie and Bella Price, rallied around businesses in search of items for the event's raffle and auction.

Live music will be played by WCR DJ Hittsville Chaulky, covering 60s and 70s era genres including Northern Soul and Reggae.

Stickers have also been donated by Rethink, who will have a stand at the event, for people to put on their scooters.
