Ruth Lock, from the college's Wellington Road campus, wanted to take the step to raise money for the charity in recognition of the work it does to support those diagnosed with dementia.

She also wanted to raise awareness of the devastating effect it has on their lives and those of their family members.

"I wanted a new hair style anyway, but it was my sister who said to me last weekend why don't you chop it all off for Red Nose Day - so it was kind of a last minute thing."

Ruth enlisted the help of her work colleagues and set up a Just Giving page at the start of the week

which has so far raised £240, with £50 being donated today alone.

The chop took place at the Bilston campus at 1 pm this afternoon by one of the college's

hairdressing students.

Ruth added: "Everyone has been saying you're really brave to do it but the way I see it it's only hair

and it will grow back.

"It may feel a bit chilly but it's actually really liberating to have no hair. My colleagues have already

suggested that I have a bob when it grows back.

"I know that Comic Relief have been doing a lot with their dementia campaigns and that is what

touched me the most after losing my Mom to it two years ago.

"There is a stigma attached to dementia at the minute and by hopefully raising awareness it can

increase funds for their research too. It is a horrible disease that destroys families as you gradually lose the person you love."

Ruth is also considering donating her chopped hair to a hair donation charity, which make wigs for

patients suffering hair loss through medical treatment.
