It is famed for cooking up one of the hottest curries in the world.

Now a restaurant in Cannock is launching a competition to find the strongest taste buds.

The Dilshad in Cannock Road, Chadsmoor, created the Crocodile Inferno which is rated as twice as hot as police pepper spray.

The dish is so hot that chefs have to wear gas masks during preparation due to the overpowering chilli fumes.

Only a handful of people have finished it and comedian Omid Djalili, who tried to take it on in a man versus food-style challenge on Sky's Hot and Dangerous show, crashed and burned.

A competition is now being staged on March 23 at the restaurant to find a Crocodile Inferno champion, with the winner scooping a £150 first prize and special T-Shirt to honour the achievement.

There will also be a £50 second prize and £30 voucher for a meal at the Dilshad for finishing third.

Competitors will have to eat a large portion of Crocodile Inferno, rice and naan against the clock with the winner being the first to polish it off.

Judges will be on hand to ensure the competition runs smoothly and the event will be compered by comedian and entertainer David St John.

Customers will be asked to sign a special disclaimer before they take part in the competition which has a £15 entry fee.

Dilshad owner Tony Uddin said: "We thought the time had come to find the ultimate Crocodile Inferno champion. Only a handful of people have ever finished the dish and people have travelled from all over the country to try it.

"Eating this dish is a titanic tussle. The crocodile literally bites you back as you eat it. You feel an intense burning – it is a torrid experience and only the bravest and most determined have the chance of finishing it."
