Elaine Coombes, of Wednesbury, launched her first book, called Through Green Eyes, in September 2013.

All proceeds from sales of the book, a record of her travels through Egypt from Alexandria to Abu Simbel, the temples, tombs and monuments, are being sent to Help for Heroes.

The 57-year-old, a former corporal with the Royal Signals, travelled to Egypt more than a dozen times over a period around six years to carry out her studies.

Mrs Coombes, of Vicarage Road, Wednesbury, said the book had helped her to raise more than £1,840 for the charity in the past year alone.

She said: "I've always been interested in history and I decided to pick on Egypt. It's the first book I've written.

"I've spent a lot of time and money going there many times. It's a mixture between a history and travel book.

"All the pictures in the book are my own.

"I'm ex-Royal Signals and know the good work that Help for Heroes does. They are brilliant and I wanted to do something to help them.

"We should all remember that these guys have put their lives on the line and any donation to the charity helps. It could really make a difference."

Mrs Coombes served in the Royal Signals for five years after joining in 1976 and was based in Germany and Northern Ireland.

The mother-of-one, who now works as a manager of a menswear store, added: "I want to continue raising as much money as I can for Help for Heroes through selling the book. I'm glad I can help."

The book costs £9.99, or £12.98 with postage and packing.
