Now Staffordshire Police's chief constable Jane Sawyers has taken on the challenge and has raised hundreds of pounds for two good causes.

Mrs Sawyers was doused with a bucket full of icy water by force mascot Kash.

The feat raised £500 in sponsorship from Police Mutual, a society dedicated to helping serving and retired police officers, staff and their families with finances.

More than £200 has also been collected from colleagues across the force, with more money still being pledged. The cash raised will be donated to the Motor Neurone Disease Association and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mrs Sawyers has now nominated other top police bods to take on the challenge.

Speaking after the event, Mrs Sawyers said: "It is incredible we have raised this amount. I have now challenged former assistant chief constable of Staffordshire and now Gloucestershire chief constable Suzette Davenport, Police Federation chairman Andy Adams and Superintendant Mick Boyle."

The craze has seen people being drenched using saucepans, to plastic wash basins and even by tractor.

One Direction star Liam Payne, of Bushbury, Wolverhampton, was one of the hundreds of celebrities to take the soaking.

The singer was nominated by Cheryl Cole and donated to the Ice Bucket Challenge's original charity – the Ateral Sclerosis Association (ALS).
