It is the newest art installation to be revealed at the popular shopping centre in Birmingham city centre - a huge paint brush with red paint dripping from its bristles.

The 8.5m tall paintbrush has been installed on the side of the East Mall in the lead up to the inaugural City of Colours festival, which is taking place next month.

'Painting The Town Red' was created by Luke Egan, also known as Filthy Luker, who was the man behind the Paralympic Opening Ceremony floats.

The festival, which begins on September 6, promotes street art and urban culture and will see more than 1,000 street artists take to the streets of Digbeth across the weekend.

Tim Walley, general manager of Bullring Birmingham said: "At Bullring we feel it's important to support different industries in Birmingham and the City of Colours Festival is a fantastic celebration of street art culture in the city.

"Whether it's rapping, graffiti art or even live illustration battles, Birmingham has some incredible talent, we want to make sure that there's a suitable platform in place for these artists to progress, which is why we're working closely with Street Art Birmingham.

"The installation is really breath-taking and it's been a pleasure to work with the artist on this.

"We hope our shoppers enjoy the new addition to the centre," he said.

Shoppers are being encouraged to tweet pictures of the installation along with what inspires the using the hashtag #BullringInspiration
