Former Wolverhampton pupils and teachers to wind back years

Former pupils and teachers at a Wolverhampton school are being invited to a reunion to mark its 50th anniversary.

Smestow School in Windmill Crescent opened in October 1964, originally to cater for the overspill from Regis School in Tettenhall.

Over the years the school has quadrupled in size and now caters for about 1,000 pupils from Castlecroft and the surrounding areas. Now the school is hosting a reunion day for students and teachers who have walked the corridors during its 50-year history.

Headteacher Martyn Morgan says he hopes to get as many former students and pupils to the October 18 event as possible and is encouraging people to take along old photographs, videos or memorabilia to help everyone reconnect with their old school days. Smestow alumni include BBC's Formula One presenter Suzi Perry, BBC Midlands Today presenter Satnam Rana and Barnsley footballer Sam Winnall. Ex-pupil Richard Green, who is helping to organise the reunion, said: "The day is all about meeting up with old school pals and teachers and chatting about old times.

"The school has changed a lot over the years, but there has always been a real community spirit there."

This year the school converted to academy status and is set to open £9.6 million worth of new facilities including a sports hall and a new teaching block.

The reunion will be held from 11am to 5pm.

People can visit at any time during the day, but the school has allocated specific time slots to enable people to meet their contemporaries.

They are 11am to 1pm for staff and students who attended the school between 1964 and 1980; 1pm to 3pm for 1981 to 1995 and 3pm to 5pm for 1996 to the present day.

A memorial garden to former staff will be open from 1.30pm onwards.
