Other successful athletes from the Games including cyclist Andy Tenant - who won silver in the men's 4000m team pursuit - could also attend the reception.

Wrestler Chinu Singh also won bronze in the 125kg final.

Councillor Roger Lawrence, leader of Wolverhampton City Council, said: "It's a fantastic boost for Wolverhampton to see gymnast Kristian Thomas win a gold medal, cyclist Andy Tennant win a silver and wrestler Chinu Singh win a bronze at the Commonwealth Games.

"Our city has a fine sporting tradition and we are incredibly proud of these local lads' achievements.

"We will invite them all to a reception to honour their success.

"They are all excellent role models. We were delighted to host a reception for Kristian when he won a bronze medal at the London Olympics two years ago.

"It will be extra special to welcome him home with a gold medal around his neck this time around.

"He is putting us on the map for all the right reasons and it is right that we honour him and the others in this way."

The reception will take place at a date to be fixed once the Commonwealth Games are over.
