Work is underway on a new meerkat mansion at the attraction after a mystery donor posted a cheque to the Castle Hill offices addressed to Alexander.

Now the lucky animal and the other 13 meerkats at the historic site will benefit from the revamp project which will include a heated timber-frame structure.

The development team at the zoo are working alongside keepers to also build a viewing window so visitors can watch the mob and their mischievous antics whatever the weather.

After receiving the anonymous funds Assistant Curator, Richard Brown said: "The donation will provide a new, larger internal area, attached to the Reptile House.

"The den, which is outside the perimeter of their current Tecton Reptilliary enclosure, will also include a tunnel system, so the meerkats can move freely between the two levels."

Mr Brown added: "We have no idea who sent in the money, so we hope our mystery donor has noticed the ongoing work and will come back and see it up and running very soon."

The refurbishment of the meerkat enclosure is just one of the recent improvement works at the 40 acre site.

The zoo, which houses more than 200 exotic and endangered animals and species is also revamping its 1930s historic Bear Ravine, the latest phase of a £1.15millon project funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
