E&S Comment: Gifts restore faith after cruel thefts

"So shines a good deed in a weary world."

Thousands of pounds have been donated to a nursery school targeted by thieves.

The overwhelming kindness of a community has done an enormous amount to restore faith in humanity.

Children were sent home from Eastfield Nursery School because it had been ransacked by lowlife burglars who even took the money they had raised for charity.

Some of those children had to learn at a tender, innocent age that there are people in this world who do not follow the most basic concepts of right and wrong.

So it was heartening to see that there were those prepared to show them that benevolence exists in abundance to more than offset the wickedness in the world.

We hope that the thieves see our report today and consider the sheer scale of effort that it has taken to start to repair the damage their cruel and selfish spree has inflicted on children who should never have had to be exposed to crime so young.

And we hope that whatever shred of decency they may have left compels them to turn themselves in.
