Toy tycoon joy after Wow! Stuff wins £100,000
Friday 12th November 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
Wolverhampton toy tycoon and Secret Millionaire Richard North was celebrating a double awards win today that gave his business a £100,000 boost.
His Wow! Stuff business has been unveiled as one of the regional winners in an HSBC initiative to find the UK’s most innovative and forward-thinking companies.
The award follows a gala dinner at Stoneleigh Abbey in Warwickshire.
Selected from regional finalists, Wow! Stuff will be awarded up to £100,000 as a winner of the Business Thinking initiative.
Mr North and his toy invention company Wow! Stuff, which employs around 30 people on the Wolverhampton Science Park, had already been celebrating their Orange Innovation of the Year accolade at the National Business Awards 2010.
Following the Orange award, Mr North, aged 44, said: “Winning this award really puts Wolverhampton on the map. It is absolutely brilliant, we are over the moon.”
Wow! Stuff’s latest invention, the remote controlled Dave the Funky Shoulder Monkey, is tipped to be a top seller this Christmas. Last month Mr North featured in an emotional episode of Channel 4′s Secret Millionaire series, when he swapped his six-bedroom home for an end-of-terrace house in Cardiff’s run-down Ely area.
The father-of-four gave away £60,000 of his own money and £40,000 of commitments from his company to people and good causes he discovered during his stay.
A spokesman for the National Business Awards said today: “Gaining market share very quickly within the traditional and well-established toys industry, Wow! Stuff has had to be very creative to compete and excel. It is this creativity, practically applied for commercial success that above all impressed the judging panel.”
