Vodafone profits hit £8.7 billion
Tuesday 18th May 2010, 7:00AM BST.
Mobile phone giant Vodafone has said it exceeded targets for the year after growth in data and broadband usage helped annual profits hit £8.7 billion.
A £1 billion cost savings programme and signs of improved revenue trends in key markets such as the UK also lifted the Newbury-based firm.
Operating profits of £11.9 billion were ahead of the company’s previous guidance in February after revenues increased by 8.4% to £44.5 billion in the year to March 31 – down 2.3% when excluding currency changes and acquisitions.
Vodafone said it expected a return to organic revenues growth in the current financial year, although this will depend on the economic environment and the level of unemployment within Europe.
Revenue growth in emerging economies, in particular India and Africa, is expected to continue as the group boosts its presence and offers more data services in these markets.
The company said revenues in the UK declined by 4.7% in the year, with lower voice revenues and continued “intense” competition partially offset by higher messaging and data revenues. With Vodafone becoming the third network to muscle into the iPhone market, the decline in UK revenues for the fourth quarter slowed to 2.6% from 3.2% in the previous three months.
Underlying earnings in the UK fell by 16.6% to £1.14 billion.

I am very upset by this news, as a vodafone employee after all the pushing I get to achieve targets and promote new lines for what? National minimum wage that is supposedly topped up by a bonus scheme. Vodafone treat its staff terribly. The targets are pushed higher and higher even though they have not been met due to unrealistic highs, which translates to NO BONUS. We, the retail staff are expected to be at work 20 mins early every day and to leave 30 mins later than the store closes everyday. UNPAID…. To cap it all we rarely get a lunch break due to staff shortages, so it all adds up over the month to another full 40 hours Unpaid by the company. How is that right? Surely, the best incentive to a team member to achieve higher targets can only be monetary renumeration. After all, thats why it’s called work. You get paid for it, And as for the my choices scheme within the company, to give cheap health care, life insurance, dental care, child minding etc to it staff as another Bonus, it weedles its way out of that also, by placing me on national minimum wage, If I contribute monthly towards any of these staff bonuses my take home pay is below the national minimum therefore I am Excluded from these plans. Thanks Again Vodafone. So from one of your top selling members of staff (in my region), that earns Vodafone over £48,000 PER MONTH!!!!!
Thank You and Good Luck for the future.
I, will not be a part of it for much longer, As it is my families main income I cannot just walk away.
Pass the Vaseline. No, Hold on, They don’t need it!

Typical of the private sector. They never have looked after their employees who like you say work hard to bring in the profits. We are equally responsible because we support them by buying their phones. Typical rip of Britain.
