A Midlands auto parts manufacturer is taking on dozens of new staff as the UK car industry shows signs of emerging from the recession.

Cannock-based ThyssenKrupp Tallent was hit hard by the economic downturn and made more than 300 employees redundant at the height of the slump. But bosses are now looking to recruit more than 100 new staff members.

Some of the new positions at the factory, where structural under-body parts for major car brands are made, will be permanent.

Industry figures said conditions were steadily improving for the car industry, but warned market conditions remained tough.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said: “Headline figures demonstrate a steady improvement in demand in home and export markets.

“But the industry will continue to face tough market conditions with the scrappage scheme closing and limited access to finance and credit.

“But a solid exchange rate and the world-class competitiveness of the UK industry should help to sustain demand over the longer term.”

ThyssenKrupp Tallent’s Cannock factory recently took on 150 temporary agency staff and more than 100 more will be recruited. Positions for zone leaders, robot maintenance and operators will be up for grabs. Technical and management posts will be permanent.

Workers have also been boosted by a three per cent pay rise—- the first since October 2007.

Human resources boss Sue Boulton said: “It was very upsetting to lose that many people. It was a time I never want to repeat.

“Some of those who left us have now come back to us through the agency. The pay rise is also cause for encouragement. We are certainly on our way back.”

The firm is holding an open day for 16 to 20-year-olds on May 15 at 10am.
