An historic Black Country firm that has been operating for more than 150 years has scooped an Express & Star Manufacturing Award.

Walsall-based Kirkpatrick Ltd has become the second firm to be handed the honour.

The awards, sponsored by the Manufacturing Advisory Service West Midlands (MAS-WM), recognise expertise, cutting edge technology – and good old-fashioned hard work.

The company makes iron castings from its base in Frederick Street and was founded by William Kirkpatrick in 1855, who went on to be a magistrate and mayor of Walsall.

Kirkpatrick Ltd, which makes items including cabinet furniture, door and gate latches, door knobs and knockers, letter plates and window fasteners, has Scottish origins. The Kirkpatrick family continues to hold shares in the company.

Historian Professor Carl Chinn presented the award to the firm and praised its managers, workforce and its ability to change adapt to changing conditions.

He said: “Crucially, like all successful manufacturers, the management of Kirkpatrick has realised the importance of cherishing traditional techniques whilst embracing modern technology and adapting to changes in the market.”

Stephen Preston, managing director of Kirkpatrick Ltd, said he was proud and delighted to accept the award.
“We are pleased to still be here manufacturing a British product in the Black Country and fighting off the imported products,” he added.

The first winner of the award was Brierley Hill-based Bird Stevens.

Bird Stevens was originally set up in 1913 when sheet metal worker Robert Stevens and works manager William Bird paid £250 for a plot of land in Sun Street, Quarry Bank.

In 1920 it was taken over by Jack Jones who later became the sole owner.

The company was praised by award judges for its innovation, adaptability and pro-active approach, particularly in the face of the recession.

The Express & star Manufacturing Awards are designed to show that innovation, hard work and success thrive within Black Country industry.
