Whizzkid is boss of own firm at age 16
Friday 26th February 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
Meet 16-year-old Sam Burke – believed to be the youngest company boss in the country.
The Wolverhampton teenage whizzkid launched Burke Bros Recovery when he was 15 after saving up enough money from weekend and holiday jobs to buy his first truck – even though he was too young to hold a driving licence.
He still cannot legally drive but after just eight months in business he is already planning to buy a service van and a second truck.
While his friends are living it up on a Saturday night, the former Smestow School pupil is up to his elbows in engine grease, rescuing motorists in distress.
“Weekends are my busiest time,” he says. “I’d rather work than go clubbing.”
As a 10-year-old, he helped his father at the family furniture removal business, Burke Bros Removals, after school and at weekends, religiously saving up his pay.
When dad Chris offered to let him use the office yard as a car park for Wolves fans on match days, Sam’s capital funds rocketed with him raking in between £200-£500 a fortnight.
He also spent 10 months working for a local recovery company learning the ropes and gaining practical experience.
He was a week shy of his 16th birthday last June when he handed over £13,000 for a 7.5 tonne crew cab, tilt and slide truck and has since won customers at dozens of clubs and body shops.
Proud dad Chris Burke said: “It’s not all been plain sailing. Just getting basic things like bank and trading accounts set up was a minefield because of his age.
“I’ve been totally behind Sam and given him encouragement but I made it clear from the start that we don’t carry family passengers,” he said. “He bought the truck himself with his own hard earned cash and cold-called people for business.”
Sam, of Torvale Road, Wightwick, is covered under his father’s operator licence but runs the firm as an independent firm, paying all his own bills.
As he cannot drive yet, Sam uses Burke Bros Removals drivers and his dad steps in when he gets an out-of-hours job.
“He’s not too happy about being called out in the middle of the night but I always go out on every job and do everything bar the driving,” said Sam.

It just goes to show that some young people can achieve what Sam has. Most youngsters these days are more concerned with drinking or are always in trouble through stealing etc.
I congratulate Sam, and his hard work has paid off. Well done.

Top work. You show the spongers and layabouts what its all about. Get off your backside and stop relying on everyone else to carry you through life. I wish you all the best.

Sam good luck mate you had the opportunity and you took it with both hands.
Paula and Danimal you appear to be putting young people down, your comment says to me that you see our younger generation as bone idle, boozed up thugs, sorry that’s not true!!!! In fact our younger generation could say of us that we are spineless, bone idle cowards who will stand for anything this government thrown at us.
Under Maggie Thatcher’s government we all stood back as all our industries were exported to third world countries and not much as changed under this government, were we out on the streets when the banking fiasco became known? Naaaaaa, come the election and the same few will bother to vote, the others will sit back and proudly say I didn’t vote because of various reasons, when what they really mean is they are too gutless to stand up and be counted, they don’t want to be blamed when a bad government gets in office.
I was born in 1942, left school in 57 and started work as a trainee upholsterer, 9 months later I got a job in a garage, after 2 years I got a job in the electroplating trade, 26 years later was made redundant during Maggie’s reign.
Take the youngsters of today and put them back in the 60’s or 70’s and they would have probably have followed a similar work pattern and they would probably have gone to pubs and clubs and got bladderd like we did, stop blaming the youngsters for the sins of our generation, the reason these youngsters don’t take work as seriously as we did is probably because they don’t see working on a checkout or delivering flyers or any of the other mundane cheap labour occupations as anything other than a fill in job till they get sacked and have to move on to the next soul destroying job.
This young lad was in a unique position his family were in business, he had seen the work ethic around him all his life, there was every chance he was going to be successful in life just as are many young Asians, their whole lives are influenced by their parents own success, they know business tactics, now apply that same environment to all the other youngsters in the UK, yes there are going to be a number of useless no hopers who just want to live at the expense of the taxpayer, but there will also be thousands of other youngsters who will jump at the chance of being an apprentice engineer, a dress designer, a jeweller, an accountant etc.
Youngsters today are the way they are because the society we allowed to develop has made them that way, a corrupt government, a corrupt society will breed children will low esteem and low moral values.

The comments about ‘spongers and layabouts’ and ‘youngsters… more concerned with drinking or are always in trouble through stealing’ are the from stuck up people who only see the stereotypical view of young adults. From this report Sam has obviously done very well for himself, but I do not like the way people think that this is how young people should be. I am 16 and studying my A levels and am looking to go into teaching. I cannot achieve this by dropping out of school and running a company along side my father, so I have to stay at school and study. My school sixth form contain 250 pupils and so account for a majority of youngsters in the local area. All the people I know that left my school in year 11 have gone on to collage, so therefore are again continuing their education. This is why I am very annoyed at the comments made by sereral people to this article as it is not a fair view of young adults of this generation.
