River Island and H&M have been joined by fellow clothing retailer New Look in opening a store on the £100 million site.

It was a quiet opening for the popular chain, with a handful of people queuing outside the store before its official opening at 10am yesterday morning.

Work is still ongoing at the site, with the waterfront entrance linking the site to the new Waterfront carpark closed.

As an opening present, the first 50 shoppers through the doors yesterday who spent £25 or more got a free goodie bag.

Manager Jemma Clews opens the store

The manager at the new store, 25-year-old Jemma Clews from Stafford, told the Express & Star she was 'very excited'.

She added: "It is great, super, sparkling, fantastic and I cannot wait for all the customers to see it. Riverside is really really nice, we have some great amazing stores at the minute and I cannot wait for all the other stores to open which will hopefully drive footfall up.

"I was manger at Rugeley for a little while before getting the amazing opportunity to come to Stafford at the Sheridan Centre and now I have got the fantastic opportunity to manage the store here at Riverside."

Asked about how the store would compete with the likes of H&M and River Island which are based opposite and adjacent respectively, Miss Clews added: "We are a high-end fashion retailer with good prices and a wide range of products catering for everybody's needs."

Customers who spent £25 or more in the store over the weekend will get a free £5 gift card.

Despite the ongoing work at the site, four more stores are set to open their doors next week.

Costa Coffee, Outfit and Marks & Spencer are all opening on Thursday 18, while JD Sports is opening the following day on Friday 19.
