Former Wolverhampton Furniture Superstore demolition approved

Development of Wolverhampton city centre has taken another stride forward after plans to demolish a former furniture store were approved.

The four-storey ex-Furniture Superstore building on the corner of Snow Hill and Cleveland Street will be brought to the ground in the coming weeks.

It follows demolition of the old Rackhams department store, which was later a Netto shop, in Snow Hill.

Both sites will be incorporated within existing car parks to provide the council with additional funds.

Ninder Johal, board member of the Black Country LEP, said: "One of the problems city centre businesses talk about all the time is that there simply is not enough space for people to park.

"While we have to say that car parking charges will put some people off, at the same time we do absolutely need space for shoppers to park their cars."

Elsewhere in the city development is happening at pace. A shortlist of developers has been drawn up to transform the historic former Armitage Shanks Tap Works Factory site into homes.

The ambitious scheme to put up more than 100 homes on three derelict sites in Low Hill was first marketed by Wolverhampton council in March.
