The Co-operative's funeral business is planning to take on an apprentice every day over the next year.
About 360 will be recruited, adding to the 500 who started a funeral apprenticeship under a scheme launched last year.
Co-op Funeralcare said 38 apprentices had qualified and taken up full-time jobs as funeral directors.
Head of human resources Karen Fenton said: "A funeral apprenticeship is a new way to join the industry and the response we've had to the scheme has been remarkable.
"High quality training and development and access to professional qualifications ensures our employees can provide the highest standards of client service and care for the bereaved."
