Poundland chief among the winners

The chief executive of Willenhall-headquartered single-price chain Poundland was among the winners at the annual EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2015 UK finals last night.

Jim McCarthy, who has more than 40 years experience in retail, was one of the Midlands entrepreneurs of the year with judges describing him as a an inspirational leader with infectious enthusiasm.

Healthcare innovator Richard Steeves, founder and chief executive of Swindon-based Synergy Health, was crowned EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2015 UK overall winner.

Mr McCarthy, who joined Poundland in August 2006, was recognised for turning his business around by building a compelling growth strategy for Poundland, returning it to profit and taking it international.

Adrian Roberts, partner and Midlands entrepreneur of the year leader at EY, said: "This is a strong year for the Midlands and serves to demonstrate that dynamic and fast growing companies – and the people behind them – are vital to the region's national and global competitiveness, and these awards rightly recognise their success.
