Planning reform – a sustainable threat
Monday 31st October 2011, 12:00AM GMT.
The latest government planning guidelines for the green belt include a “presumption in favour of sustainable development,” writes Peter Rhodes.
The snag, as one of their own aides has discovered, is that because there is no detailed definition of “sustainable development,” it appears to permit all sorts of nasties, including opencast mining.
Nothing is more sustainable than a mine.
It sustains itself right until the last bit of coal has gone.
“Sustainable” is set to become one of the great weasel words of our age.
