Trading Standards – a national treasure

Rejoice, for the Three Tons of Gravel drama is over, writes Peter Rhodes.
I get my refund, the online gravel firm gets its wrist smacked and the world is that little bit fairer.
It began way back in April when the firm delivered three pallets of gravel to my address for £290 but unloaded them in the farmyard next door.
I asked for it to be moved. They declined but offered a refund, which I accepted. Some weeks later they refunded £149 – but kept £141 for their delivery charges.
Thankfully, at this stage Wolverhampton Trading Standards took up my case and put the trader right on the precise meaning of the word “refund”.
Co-Op Visa have returned the money to me and the trader says he will change his terms and conditions.
My profound thanks to Trading Standards.
After an experience such as the above, you realise what a huge mistake it would be if David Cameron ever heeded the advice of his friend and strategy director Steve Hilton.
He’s the clot who a few weeks ago seriously suggested suspending all consumer-rights legislation.
When it comes to disputes like this when a trader simply refuses to hand over your money, Trading Standards are Joe Public’s last line of defence and a national treasure.
