Why give a cat a name?
Monday 24th October 2011, 8:58AM BST.
Peter Rhodes writes: It is reported by an animal charity that food names (Saffron, Sushi and Jellybean) are replacing old favourites such as Tiddles and Thomas as names for cats.
Listen, I will say this only once.
In the millions of years that Homo sapiens and Felis catus have shared this planet, no-one has discovered a more pointless or unrewarding activity than giving a cat a name.

When you say pointless have you not considered the fact that cats do respond to their names in the same way as young children.
Obviously you would also consider giving children names as pointless too!

Can I ask why my comment that Peter Rhodes is talking absolute rubbish was not refused publication? My comment still stands, he is talking rubbish and it is neither clever nor big, nor even journalism to be purposely controversial to cat lovers.

i’ve got a name for every cat in our street. the same name is applicable to each cat, and would be censored if i was to reveal it here…

Unfortunately, given the passage of time, I cannot quote you directly but about 20+ years ago, your column majored quite heavily, for a while and quite amusingly then, about your cat which had a name.
I wish I could shame you more accurately.
