With the season drawing to a close this season, Matt Turvey looks back on a season few Aston Villa fans will recall with fond memories.

Aston Villa are safe barring a colossal overhaul of goals by Bolton Wanderers that would be unlucky for the club from B6, even by the standards of their miserable season to date.

2011/12 will invariably be remembered as a season with protests sandwiched either side with fans gathering to express their dismay towards the appointment of, and continued support of, Alex McLeish.

The season has also brought polar opinions to the fore, with fans regularly clashing over minute details that would seem irrelevant in a season where success was achieved. Looking of social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, you would be forgiven for thinking that the repetitive one-upmanship had been stolen from the playground.

However, this is exactly how things have got at present - a lack of success leaving a vacuum for which fans can lambast each other for attending games or not attending games with the former group claiming the be true supporters, whilst the latter think the others are lining the pockets of a bad owner. Others cultivate profanity laden arguments on the disbelief that anyone could possibly even have an excuse for the manager, their anger seemingly knowing no bounds.

As with any analysis, it is foolish to get involved in the polar opposites of any debate. There will be, as in any topic, extreme views shown. Rarely. however, does it transpire in the long term that such extreme views were correct.

The season has been poor in any terms one cares to look at it via. A club like Villa should not, all things being equal, be finishing towards the bottom of the table.

Sensibility has to look at the context of the finish though. Whilst many can throw mud at McLeish for an undoubtedly poor season, the use of the Glaswegian as a scapegoat is poor form really. A man, whether a poor manager or not, has fast become a figure of hatred, lambasted for whatever he may choose to do.

In such circumstances, it could be perceived that sacking McLeish would be the only option, at least by some. It could also be argued that McLeish, with a distinct lack of funds, has done what he could, even if what he did do fell far short of fan expectation.

Fan expectation, sadly, does not comprise any part of board decisions nowadays though. Randy Lerner, a man with almost legendary ability to remain quiet and unmoved in the face of anything, will do what he wants to do.

Some fans may call such an attitude short-sighted, or likely to continue to upset the relationship with the fans, as though Lerner's persistence is merely a countdown to the club's downfall.

Such fans may well have forgotten a short time ago when Lerner's silence was deemed irrelevant as the club splashed large amounts of cash and Villa were at the other end of the table. Thoughts of debts were ignored because, when it comes down to it, fans just want to see success, whilst leaving the spreadsheet analysis to those who want to make accountancy their lives.

The reality is that fans don't know the full picture that Lerner has in front of him. Quick assessments of the American as inept, foolish, or somehow incapable of running a football club often lack depth of analysis. For example, why would Lerner choose options that would directly impact the prestige, and associated value, of the football club? Why would he look to damage his own property which he has a high investment in? Lerner may be naive, but idiocy is not a term any measured person would make.

Sadly for Villa, such measure has quickly evaporated in the rapidly increasing temperature of the furnace of anger amongst fans. Instead, anger proves to be the driving force of some to suggest that the club's three men of power - Randy Lerner, Paul Faulkner, and Alex McLeish - are inept, idiotic, and beyond reproach.

Those with such extreme anger may well find that constantly having all guns blazing every day gets tiresome, and that the average fan, and also the club's hierarchy, quickly tunes out to the persistent calls for the removal of all people that some have to blame. Those who protest may well believe they have the support of everyone because of the circle of angry people who mill around each other week on week, but they don't.

Lerner has rarely communicated, and I don't see anything changing in the near future. Fans will continue to paint those at the club with whatever terms they choose simply because, as with many situations, people demand answers, and their associated scapegoats.

This season, the scapegoats will be numerous from the players to the manager to the non-playing staff. The season may well have been poor, much as last season was if we are honest, but the changes some want may well not transpire. Fans will pick their enemies, hoping for their removal, although what may actually happen may well turn out to be an altogether different proposition.

In which case those with persistent anger will need to either find a way to turn the dial to 11, or merely see their anger fade into apathy as their movements fail to bring the differences they are looking for. I imagine, given time, it will be the latter.

Anger may well be a powerful force, but it burns out in the face of a situation that the angry can not actually control. Aston Villa, sadly for many, belongs to someone else nowadays, and all the fans will have left to do next season is attend or not.
