Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
A year of change at Albion
Wednesday 8th February 2012, 6:00AM GMT.
This weekend’s Black Country derby marks twelve months in charge for our head coach Roy Hodgson, but where has the last year taken us? writes West Brom blogger Jarrod Hill.
Football has a habit of throwing up coincidences and the eagerly anticipated game against Wolves this Sunday is no different. Wolves were Roy’s first opponents 12 months ago (after allowing Michael Appleton to be in charge against West Ham) when they visited the Hawthorns and they mark his first year anniversary as we prepare to make the short journey to the Molineux.
So where has the last twelve months taken us?
Well this time last year we were 16th in the league having played 25 games and having accumulated 26 points. Currently having played a game less we sit 15th in the league and have the same amount of points, 26. Which means a loss against Wolves this weekend would give us an identical tally of played 25 points 26.
What the comparative statistics don’t tell you is that last season we went on to finish 11th in the league with 47 points. Anyone that has ever sat through a party political broadcast will tell you that statistics can be manipulated to tell different stories, but it is interesting to see that according to the figures we are pretty much where we were this time last year.
One big difference this season compared to last is that currently we have a six point gap between us and the bottom three. Not a fact to be dismissed lightly as avoiding relegation remains our number one priority.
So what have been the big changes?
In terms of personnel only Scott Carson has been allowed to leave the first team squad during Roy Hodgson`s tenure. In bound we have seen Shane Long, Gareth McAuley, Billy Jones, Zoltan Gera, Marton Fulop, Scott Allan, Liam Ridgewell, Keith Andrews and Ben Foster on loan. All for a combined transfer budget of around £7.5million. Not exactly mega bucks by Premier League standards but arguably excellent value for money.
Liam Ridgewell and Keith Andrews we haven’t seen yet but the majority of Baggies faithful are happy with the signings made under Mr Hodgson. Also during this time key first team players have signed improve terms and committed themselves to the club on lengthier contracts. Roy may not be able to call this squad his own just yet but he is certainly moving ever closer.
What he has instilled is his own philosophy on how the game should be played. Last season he managed to curtail our wanton abandonment of defensive duties without allowing our natural attacking instincts to suffer in the process. The balance saw us move away from the relegation dog fight and cruise comfortably into an 11th place finish.
This season that same balance has been more difficult to come by. Injuries to key players have hampered us a great deal this season whereas upon Roy’s appointment last February we were over the worst of it. I can remember few times this season when Roy has had a fully fit squad to choose from, but he certainly isn’t the only Premier League manager to have that problem.
Some fans have bemoaned the lack of entertainment under Roy this season and we have certainly seen less free flowing football, especially at home. We have managed just 24 goals this season compared to 31 after 25 games last season. A casualty of the more rigid shape Roy prefers the team to play within, and the biggest casualty has been our performances at home. We have scored just nine goals at home so far this season and have won only two games at the Hawthorns. Contrary to that amazing statistic is the fantastic away form that has seen us score 15 goals and collect five wins and three draws.
Personally I believe we have progressed under Roy Hodgson even if the figures do not show it, and once we have a number of our injured players back the points and home form will return.
Roy’s biggest problem has been up front and those problems persist as he struggles to find his best strike force.
Shane Long has looked good when fit, but his injury problems have dragged on all season and combined with Peter Odemwingie`s own fitness problems and lack of form Roy has had to muddle through at times.
Losing Chris Brunt and Zoltan Gera to injury has seriously harmed our creativity in midfield and taken two goal scorers from our ranks.
Yet I still view the squad as being better than it was twelve months ago and the key is to keep progressing. Roy will point to the fact he has spent very little while solidifying our team and disgruntled fans will point to our home form as their major concern. Like many other teams we have suffered some poor luck, and we all know the fickle finger of fate can have a dramatic effect on any football club.
If we manage to finish this season in the same way we finished last season then we have little to worry about and a third consecutive season of Premier League football was always our pre season target.
Roy may have one or two problems to iron out before that can happen but I still have confidence that he is the right man to make to move us forward.
So happy anniversary Roy, three points against the Wolves this Sunday would be the perfect present.
* Before I go I would like to bring to your attention an amazing fundraising event this Sunday. A group of fans are going to walk from the Hawthorns to the Molineux in aid of the wonderful children’s charity Acorns. Another sensible post mate,I’m glad you mentioned the fact that a lot of supporters have taken into consideration and some have not “Roy has had to muddle through at times”.
Hope you have a very, very nice day on Sunday
and wish Roy happy anniversary from me if you see him.

A very sensible non emotional logical blog Jarrod and I agree. But But But whilst in my head I know you are right, in my heart I am sad. We have a much better squad than last year we are mostly solid, but boy we are boring!!! And we aren’t creative, we are awful at home and the excitement of playing teams off the park has been very rare this season. OK I’ll be patient, I’ll hope Arry wins his case, RH signs up and next season we push on and up—-but being an Albion fan for many years I can’t get used to a steady eddie improvement—-not in my heart!!!!

That the squad is stronger cannot be doubted but i feel quite strongly that we have gone backwards this season. If we finish the season strongly like last year then of course we will have no problems but i have serious doubts on this , yes there is a gap to the bottom but 6 points can quickly disappear Bomber.
Victory Sunday would give us all a massive boost and may well end Mad Mick’s reign at the custard bowl, Defeat and Mr Hodgson could well be on his way, Mr Peace can be utterly ruthless when tested.
Improved under Roy? That’s questionable…especially after that awful performance against Swansea and a lot of other poor display’s at home this season.
We need to start scoring and that will not happen with lazy Odemwingie up front.
I fear that if we lose on Sunday we may slip more and more into the relegation battle.

If we lose sunday we need Hodgson out. Boring tactics and negative football. No passion, get Houghton in fast.
I’m not looking forward to it though.

Hi Jarrod,
an excellent blog mate, thank goodness we have someone level-headed and reasonable doing it.
Tell me,who’d be a Manager,eh?
First of all, talkin’ about Wolves,Mick has made progress during his time there, but many fans have been calling for his head as far back as I can remember.
Meanwhile, over at Villa, the fans are trying to organise a protest to ‘get McLeish out’,because in the few months he’s been there, they see him as a failure who’s ruining the club, based on the fact that they are ONLY 13th in the premiership!
At Albion, the one pattern we had for years was to get promoted, then drop back down like a stone, almost immediately.
I’m sure that the Baggies spent a fair amount of time chasing RH,and pestered him until he agreed to take on the job as Head Coach.
And what were the requirements they hoped he could provide?
To save our neck at the end of last season, and give us some stability in this one,so we can finally try to build a more solid base for the future.
It may not be pretty, but neither is a building site when a project is under construction.
You can shout ‘this is ugly, sack the site Manager’-
but if the END product turns out to be solid and impressive, you may feel a little embarrassed about your premature outbursts (that takes me back),and wished you’d waited a bit more patiently.
Looking at Roy’s past record,he’s often turned clubs around that have previously been struggling, but I noticed that when his teams have had a tougher season,it’s usually when a number of players have been missing through injury,a problem he’s had to suffer recently with us.
I haven’t really thought much about who my favourite Manager’s been since I first started watching the Baggies, but I like to give each one a fair crack of the whip.
So let’s just allow the man get on with his job,and help him out by doing all we can to get behind the team,in good times AND bad.

Our most important signing this season will be Roy, get him on a longer contract first.
Then let him weave his magic with HIS squad.
He can, he will and we supporters will enjoy Prem footy for a long time.
Oh and I love the programme theme this season!

By the way, both myself and some others here have been accused of wearing ‘rose-tinted’ glasses, and only seeing the good stuff.
On the contrary, the ‘accusers’ seem to wear ‘blinkers’,and will only allow themselves to see the ‘bad’ stuff.
So these guys are saying-
‘after a poor display against Swansea,Roy must now be sacked!’.
Sorry guys-
JP took your advice, and put on a pair of blinkers to restrict his view-
and after seeing us draw at Fulham, and beat Stoke at their place,he was so impressed,he gave Roy a pay rise and extended his contract…………….

Estbois and WHB
I have to agree that the entertainment rating has dramatically dipped, but Roy will argue he is here to make sure we are a part of the PL next season and if he achieves that aim who can argue. The problem is some fans will vote with their feet. I have spoken to many fans who have already mentioned that they will not be renewing their season tickets next season. Partly due to finances and partly due to what they have seen at the Hawthorns this season.
I must admit i am torn between wanting entertainment and wanting stability, Roy obviously feels that we cannot at this time achieve both. I would argue that last season we did achieve both and i would also argue that a return to that balance he found last season is the way forward.

Some good points there. Injuries is IMO one of the main reasons for our dip. We were sitting pretty at 9th when our captain sadly broke his ankle + Shane Long started his little catalogue of injuries. Ried and Shorey who were hitting solid form also added to that list. There are 4 core members of our team out.
Obviously pete being out of form has made a big impact too, but as stated we are level on points as last year so in Hindsight we have made progress but had a lot of bad luck.
if this were to of happened last year then I believe we would have been in serious trouble so i think we have made huge strides forward in respect to having a good solid team.
I know we will stay up but probably not 11th but then again I don’t believe it will be a last day panic either.
Life has never been straight forward being a baggie and have got through tougher times than this (Alan Buckley era) so lets enjoy what we have!

Yeah, good post, but last season we had goals in us, our fans were confident we could score goals. This season it’s hard to think where there coming from, as you say we have had injury’s to key players, but it’s the loss of form that’s most worrying! PO has been rash and very wasteful, he shows no composure and doesn’t try as hard as he did last season. Shane Long has been in and out of the side and has missed a few himself. Nothing coming from midfield now either, Dorrans is a shadow of his former self, no darting runs through the channels! Thomas is slowing down and spends most of his time on his butt! Morrison has been good, but not consistent! Mulumbu has been on and off too! and no chances being created. It must be hard for Roy to pick a team, let alone a formation, with so many players having off days that are lasting longer than usual, and on top of the injury’s. Fingers crossed we get through this poor home run and stay up. Either way, JP will have spend a lot of money in the close season, to ensure we have better quality players for the next campaign!

I have to agree with all of the above…yes we do appear to have a better squad but its not showing in the results and it is a results business. I just cant get excited at weekends anymore and even when we take a lead I’m bloody nervous. As one would expect Roy defends his players and keeps repeating that Ode will come good as will 442 formation and whilst I know we have gone through all that a million times it is still relevent…Roy time is not on our side anymore and me for one would like a bit more bite and changes. Let players know if they dont / cant perform then others will be given the chance. I for one just want more effort and commitment.
Great post Jarrod. Your thoughts are certainly along the thinking of myself and it’s not all doom and gloom as some may have suggested.
And as for boring yes I do agree to a certain extent it is not exciting under TM or RDM where were playing attacking football, but boring no not in my eyes. Just look at the football we played against Bolton and Wolves this season. Played some cracking football and fully deserved the 3 points. Also Tottenham game before Gera went off injured.
For me under Roy we are far more organised than I have ever seen us in the Premier League and we don’t concede many goals. I would prefer that than going gung ho and losing to teams 4-2 or 3-1 like we used to under the last regime.
I am confident our home form will return, we just need that little bit of luck go our way and that nitty gritty win.
I agree we have moved forward. I share the frustrations with you all with home form but our away form has been fantastic so it isn’t all wrong. But for gera, long and brunts injuries we could be much better off but that’s football. I believe in roy, and I believe in our players. I think sundays game could bring a tactical approach to dominating a weakened wolves midfield and hopefully bring 3 priceless points. See you there if you going, boing boing

Good post Jared,
The Wolves game has come at a perfect time for us. They will be hoping for a decent run following a decent victory against Warnock’s thugs. Our players will be happy to get away from the negativity they’ve inherited at the Hawthorns. I took my daughter to her first ever game on Saturday, we had to leave with about 12 minutes left because the air was turning rather blue. I must admit I had to hold my own disgruntled views to myself in the fear of dropping the f-bomb. The main reason for my negative view, is that I thought Roy’s tactical changes were illogical, PO, GD, and JT should have been changed earlier. PO can only play up front when we have a 4-5-1 formation, he’s not interested in building a relationship with another forward. Dorran’s looks lost out on the wing, offer’s little help to the struggling fullbacks. JT great going forward, not the best at coming back, both Swansea goals he was found walking or at best light jogging back. Molumbu gave the ball away more times than I can ever remember, but he was still putting a shift in. I hope we go back to 4-5-1 against the Wolves, and hope LR comes in for NS. Put Scharner back in the middle with one up front and SC on the wing.
Also despite sitting in the East Stand next to a packed Brummie Road I heard very little apart from the Welsh, and the occasional response from the Smethwick faithful.
trying to keep the faith!

Jarrod,
Brilliantly summed up mate. Roy believes in work first play later. We at the moment are in work first mode. Playing Shorey on the left would allow him to drop back and defend if needs be. That would give license for Tchoyi to roam freely with Fortune and Long as they can interchange. Osaze on later to refresh the pace. Our goal dip has not come through our style of play, more from not taking our chances. We will stay up as we have the wherewithal.

morning bomber, great blog, and well made points. Personally im surprised that we have people calling for our managers head, and im not not totally convinced that they are genuine baggies. I feel that we are very lucky to have a manager with such experience at the helm, and a lot of the reason he hasnt moved us on as quickly as maybe Fulham could well be the financial constraints we work under as a club. Now thats another argumant, im happy with Mr Peace and yes i wish we would splash the cash a little more often, but your figures show exactly how we have improved for very little money. The premiership is in for big changes in the future, and we may find every body has to run their clubs in the same manner.
On a final note, i would say be careful what you wish for, i have it on very good authority there may well be someone new at the helm next season and that in itself throws up all sorts of questions

Morning Jarrod.
Do you remember the Fast Show? The bloke in the pub that used to change his opinion to agree with the last one of his mates that had spoken?
I read your excellent level-headed assessment of where we stand.
Then Kev comes on and I know I’m on safe ground so I nod and say yeah life ain’t too bad.
But Estbois casts a slight shadow so I rein back a bit like an agnostic at the Synod, I’ll believe Roy’s a good manager if somebody proves it to me beyond all doubt.
Enter Max and I know you’ve been misleading me, things are far blacker than when Trevor Summers held the purse strings and we’re definitely on the road to nowhere.
Cyril seems to have turned into one of the grumpy old gits from the Fast Show and convinces me that Roy is the Anti-Christ and should be burned at the stake.
I then have to do an about turn because that b****r Rocket has come on spouting fair minded good sense and cageyb has joined in and been joined by AIK, yes it’s great being a Baggie.
Oh no Terry Throstle has put his two pennerth in and I’ve put The Sisters Of Mercy on the jukebox and tied a noose to the optics.
After Terry SC Baggie seems almost optimistic.
But Dale has really got me going as he runs round the bar giving out free rose tinted specs and just to be sure rose tinted contact lenses to wear under them. If I was gay Dale I’d marry you.
Then Tumpa ever so slightly lowers the expectations with what is a very realistic appraisal.
Can I now ask the E&S to close this thread as my head is spinning. I’ll get me coat.

Well balanced opinions. My opinion is – if we are to become established we have to sacrifice some attacking play for defensive solidity. I do feel injuries to Brunt, Gera, Reid, Olsson, Jones, Scharner, Long, Dorrans & Odewingie at key moments havn’t helped. However, if we Win Sunday we will be a minimum of 8 points clear of relegation. Big game, so I think if we stay up and keep Hodgson we will progress into a comfortable prem side. And from solid bases palaces are built

also, some seem to be suggesting that if we get beat on sunday we’re doomed. our away run has to be broken at some point, and it may well be this weekend. but who really thinks we’ll need 40 points this season?
i still believe we’ll pass the 40 point mark again, but 35 will secure 17th place for someone, probably sunday’s opponents

Back to serious mode. I’d like to see us go back to one striker on Sunday. If SL is fit I’d start him as striker with PO MAF and Tchoyi on the bench to come on later.
The midfield would depend on who is showing up in training but I’d be thinking ‘warriors’ and have at least two of Scharner, Mulumbu and Andrews along with JT and Morrison, Cox or Dorrans.
Defence I’d go with BJ and Liam Ridgewell at full back for the battle it’s bound to be.

Excellent post. I think Roy was and still is an excellent appointment. He has steadied the ship and as stated without key injuries and lack of form by certain individuals we would be safe mid table by now. We have become more defensive especially in the firsr half, and we play the same game home and away. We definately lack some midfield guile to open up defences at home. Brunt and Gera spring to mind. I sat right behind the away dug out at Fulham and if i was in any doubt about Roys enthusiasm/commitment to WBA it was dispelled that night. He kicked and headed every ball and showed why he has been a top coach for so long. As previous posts have said we are a “works in progress” Strange thing is when he managed Fulham it was their home form that was their strength and they couldnt win away! Funny old game!!!

You’re right to point out that league wise we’re pretty much where we were at this time last season, a posistion which cost RDM his job. The saving grace this year, is that unlike last season two or three are starting to get cut adrift. I think Blackburn and Wigan are booked and that should save us, but I still think Wall Heath has called it right when he says that defeat Sunday could well end the Hodgson era, as JP might not want to risk it.

I think the real problem is that having finished 11 th with 47 points last season we all expected a little more this year. Perhaps our optimism is misguided as the club in it’s current situation cannot afford the financial investment for a major push forward. At least the board have been successful in tying players to improved contracts and we have not seen an exodus of our best players from the club. Unfortunately some of those players have not responded to their improved contracts and how right the manager was to point out earlier in the season that he had seen little in return for the improved terms afforded to Peter Odemwingie. Our dismal home record cannot be easily explained but it’s worth pointing out that Liverpool and the Villa have also struggled at home.
During this season we have won at the Villa , Stoke and Newcastle all places where we traditionally struggle yet we lose at home to Wigan, Norwich [ twice ] and Swansea. You explain it I can’t.

Robbo kept us up through sheer luck and now we finally have a manager who actually knows how do it and gave us an 11th place finish last season – has broken all kinds of hoo-doos and is a genuine football man – but thats not good enough cos you think we SHOULD be doing better and we SHOULD be winning more games and we SHOULD be playing this/that formation and our subs SHOULD be made 10 minutes earlier blah blah..

I’m looking forward to following the Albion to the Molineux again this weekend. There is no better place to see us win, but also no worse place to see us lose! Last year was a disgraceful effort and must not happen 2 years running. Wolves out battled us last season.
We are a better team than Wolves and must impose our game on them. I would be tempted to play Keith Andrews as he seems pretty relieved to be at the Albion and motivated to get playing in the Premier again. Dependant on fitness I would play Foster in goal, Reid, Olsson, McCauley, Jones at the back, Mulumbu and Scharner behind Morrison, Andrews, Tchoyi and Long up front. 99.9% sure this won’t be the team though!!
Just want to say as well that at times Olsson was defending on his own against Swansea. He is an awesome defender and we are lucky to have him. He could easily slot into most teams in the league and hope we can keep hold of him next season.

37 Happy,
funny you should say that.
I was just thinking that during the 80′s and 90′s,we had about 12 managers in 12 years, each one looked promising, each one brought in new ideas and new players, and each one either failed miserably or walked away after a short period of time.
I had a look at the wolves site the other week, and the people who still wanted Mick out were trying to come up with an alternative.
Apart from trying to ‘prise’ someone away from another club, the best name they could come up with seemed to be-
Ray Wilkins,the TV pundit.
After that, they were scratching their heads.
I don’t mind constructive criticism, but if you want change, can you put forward an attractive alternative that’s got a really good chance of working?
This site is wearing me down.

Whilst i do not think we have been playing badley it has not been as entertaining as previous years.
The problem was in general the entertainment also coincided with dissapointment. I somethimes think a few look through rose tinted glasses at the past. We are not Barcelona so that will come at a price, and its a fair price to pay IMO
There seem to be some short memories on here, i was at Halifax when they knocked us out the cup. At home to hartlepool losing 3-0 on a tuesday night if i remember correctly.
Watching the likes of Paul Williams and Sturat Bowen. Watching the dross Bobby Gould served up. Watching Bryan Robson guess how to be a Mananger.

43 smethwick baggie,
you don’t have to go anywhere, just put forward a good idea that might work better than the present one.
I don’t want to offend anybody, and I believe you ARE a passionate fan,but if you really want the manager out,try to think of a better alternative with a good chance of succeeding.
I can’t change people’s views, and I wouldn’t want to brainwash anyone,I just get a bit irritated when I see the same criticism everyday.
I’m not really a bad guy,honest,and I apologise if I’ve upset you.
We both come from Smethwick, and we’re both Albion fans,so we’re all in it together.

Jarrod, what a blog – clearly it has engaged a few with very different view points and all are entitled to their opinion. I feel that we have improved during Hodgson’s reign and struggle to understand what the ‘Hodgson out’ brigage expect. I understand that we all want us to improve but we are a club that needs to develop steadily over time and I believe that we are going in the right way. If we sack him who would get – Bruce – oh that would be great improvement wouldn’t it???
Knee jerk reactions are too common nowadays, unfortunately it is the society that we live in when everyone want everything now and for nothing.
If we win Sunday, all will be rosey on Monday, if we lose Roy will have to go out – you will not need to write the blog – it will right itself. There are 14 games to go in a season where we have not performed well at home but surely this will change. I can understand the view points on the poor home form as this is where most of our supporters get to see the team perform. If the form was reversed would people still be moaning? Perhaps, perhaps not.
I hope that we can put out our best team available on Sunday and as long as the players are up for it, I feel that we will get a positive result. Based on how we seemm to set up away from home I feel the counter attack will suit us well for this game. I do understand some of the negative comments posted but can we really not be a little more optimistic?
Come on you Baggies!

Cantello – I’m just a bit suprised at the critisism Roy gets when Megson is still (rightly) seen as a hero dedpite the dull football and 2 relegations, TM never got this sort of stick even when we went down and we shipped goals all over the shop and most people were gutted when he left, and even RDM enjoyed a majority of support from fans on here (and most were angry when JP pulled the trigger.
Anyway – I think Hodgson is a better manager than all of the above and given the time (and support) he will prove this and hopefully see us enjoy our 3rd season in the prem – and many more !!

The mere fact that people take the time to read and post on this site demonstrates their passion for our club and it would be fantastic if we could all agree and by and large I think we do!
I don’t believe that anyone is really anti Roy, yes even you Wall Heath!
What I do believe is that we all have different levels of patience! Some can see the bigger picture and others want things quicker.
Kev makes the point and for me wins the argument when he says how can Roy be responsible for Mulumbu’s miss placed passes! Would anyone on here leave him out? The guy was having a bad day, should Roy have known that before the game? Injuries, are they Roy’s fault? And on and on and on.
Roy was a good coach last year, so what’s changed! I’ll tell you what, he is now playing a different system to the one that appeared so sucessful last season 451. Not true! We were playing 451 during our long losing streak under RDM. Now it’s 442 and it’s not working! Not true! Look at our away record.
After a lifetime of trying to predict the Albion I’ve finally given up, but what I do know is that Harry has now been cleared, Roy will be going nowhere so everybody just have patience we are getting there and as Cantello says a building site is not pretty during construction!

I echo your sentiments 100%. We finally have a manager with a fine pedigree and fantastic knowledge of the game who is finally trying to rid us of our’yo-yo’tag. I’ve been through the times in the 80′s & 90′s where there seemed to be a revolving door fitted to the manager’s office and where did that get us?? probably our lowest ebb..ever. Woking, Twerton Park, need I say any more.
Give Roy time and I’m sure he’ll see the job through and establish us as a decent Premiership outfit.

Whilst the team is still above relegation by a comfortable margin and whilst it looks as though we will stay up, there is no reason to get rid of the manager. There is still 14 games left, a new manager cannot bring anybody else in so only has our own players to work with. I feel once the injuries are back mainly Long and Brunt we will see a upturn in form. If not and we head into the final 6 games and are in the relegation zone needing wins …. maybe then would be the time to think about a new manager to try and get a bounce like you sometimes do … Although since hughes has gone to QPR there hasn’t really been too much of a bounce.

Just 2 final questions and then I promise me soap box will be put away…..
I just wondered how Hodgson has managed to keep us out of the bottom three for his entire reign at the Baggies (including this season which some seem to think is our worst in living memory) – and given us our highest finish ever whilst spending less than either Mowbray or Di-Matteo.
I also wondered how his goals against tally at this level is better than Mesgon’s team of dour battlers and yet at the same time we have a 15 goal forward on our books..it’s almost like he is a decent manager ….
Any thoughts ??

But your probably one of those passionless and quiet fans, who sit down in one of the three libraries at the Hawthorns! Smethwick End not included! The only consistent thing about the Albion is their inconsistency. I am looking to lose on Sunday because the Albion always knot my stomach up, and to win would put us 8 points clear, which is not the Albion way. The football may be more boring, but I fear our league status will keep us all enthralled to the end. I hope I am wrong because beating the Dogheads is so much fun!

We (The Albion) are an enigma wrapped up in a puzzle.
What i find difficult to comprehend, and by consequence my critisizm of our manager is, away games, we seem to play without fear and a good degree of flair.
Conversely our home performances are just about as far removed from those two attributes as is imaginable.
Some contributors to these blogs speak up against the more vitriolic posters (ie, Hodgson out etc) by stating we have no devine right to beat the likes of Wigan, Swansea et-al…….Quite correct, we do not have a devine right.
However, as paying customers we have a devine right to expect the same levels of commitment and enterprise that is wittnessed away from the Hawthorns.

Roy Hodgson can’t be blamed for Mulumbu’s poor passing – physically, that’s true, but that isn’t to say Hodgson and Burton aren’t having a psychological impact upon how he and others are playing. I’m poising the possibility, not stating a fact.
Many of the points Jarrod makes I can’t dispute, but it is a carefully crafted blog which avoids certain questions. We’ve had injuries for both Home and Away games – so why can we win 5 away and only 2 at home?
I think its false to say there’s only two camps – the positive camp behind Hodgson, Peace and the team and those who want a complete clear out before we’re all doomed! I wouldn’t want to be placed in either camp – I see both positive and negative sides to the last 12 months.
Perhaps we need a new motto under Roy: “Organised in defeat, opportunists in victory”

Thanks for the welcome back. I’ve posted a couple of times recently after a bit of a self-imposed exile. Unfortunately I’ve felt that this board has recently gone beyond the realms of light-hearted banter and has become, in some instances, extremely personal and vitriolic.

I used to argue the toss with me mates in the pub,and Albion Supporters Club, about football matters, and we’d sometimes end up with what I’d call ‘slightly raised’ voices,it was fairly robust stuff, but we’d all take it on the chin.
When you’re on here, you can’t see anyone,so as it warms up you get a bit emotional, and you sometimes forget some people are more sensitive than others.
I expected Smethwick Baggie to hit me with both barrels, but he seemed to get a bit upset instead, and as I’ve got a soft centre,I straight away wanted to apologise.

I don’t want Hodgson to leave as I do beleive that he can turn us into a mid-table Prem side, however, home performances need to improve before it becomes a major problem.
Having said that, Capello has just resigned so Hodgson could possibly be moving on anyway. This could be disastrous for us but I recon the FA will want Redknapp and Redknapp will be more than willing to accept a massive wad of money for the England job I’m sure.

Good to see you back and that’s the first time I’ve been compared to Harold McMillan.
Just to pick you up on something at the start, you say ‘who repeat themselves so often on here.’ As Rocket has said before, do the words pot, kettle and black ring any bells as you keep repeating the opposite message over and over again.
Okay you’re managerial suggestions. I think Warnock might have been a product of Max’ extremely warped sense of humour and Cyril would be complaining about the noise of bones cracking as Shaun Derry and Clint Hill set about their business for us.
You couldn’t have known it when you wrote but Brendan Rodgers has just signed a new contract. But ask yourself why would he leave Swansea for us? In your scenario we would be a team that has sacked two managers in 12 months whereas he’s secure at a club doing well and may well be offered a Tottenham type job if it comes up. Wolves fans mentioned Paul Lambert but why would he leave a club that gets similar size crowds and where he’s idolised?
Remember these people don’t love Albion or Wolves as we do, they see us for what we are, two average clubs struggling to establish themselves in a world where most others are billionaires and we’ve got our backsides hanging out of our trousers. Yes Swansea and Norwich are doing well but they havent reached the end of their first season yet let alone their second or third.

Compairing last season to this season, has anybody stopped to consider that we may have over achieved with our final league placing last season? There are to many people expecting us to automatically achieve the same and it dont work like that.
Another point, Odemwingie was scoring goals on a very regular basis and now he is not and I think we will struggle to get a player into double figures.
The AGM in London,I pointed the facts out last week on these pages and yet still people are asking if poison is being spilled.
I know three shareholders who are travelling down today to confront the arrogance of the man in question.A fantastic business man who keeps our club in an excellent financial state but to all his disciples on these pages who think that without him that our great club would wind up,remember he comes first and West Bromwich Albion and supporters come second !!!

Streetly 114 – I agree with your comments regards the team, but want to pick up on your assesment of Peace – firstly I agree that he probably does put himself first and the club second…but surely EVERY owner of a club would do that ??
Even the Sheik who owns Man City wouldn’t put more money into his club than he could afford – he can just afford more than anyone else. Abramovic at Chelsea has stopped spending huge sums (Torres aside) and they now can’t compete with Man City – it’s all relative aint it.
There have been owners who spent money they didn’t have – Risdale for example – do we really want that ??
Peace has said he can only spend so much and that he would consider offers for the club -how come no one is coming forward publicly to buy a club that is well run, in the the premiership and has little debt ??
Would i want to do business with JP – No !!
Would I want to work for him – probably not.
Is he doing a decent job of looking after my club – Yes i think he is.

At the time I thought he was a good appointment and he did a great job to keep us up, but now I’m not so sure. The recent Capello/Terry captaincy issue was one where we were told first that the FA had acted without telling Capello, only later was it revealed that they had been in contact throughout.
As I said I had no knowledge of the reason it was held in London I was merely asking the question ‘was there a reason?’ I also said that if there was no reason then I thought JP has got it totally wrong. When I think he gets it wrong as with sacking GM and selling Earnie at the wrong time I’ve always said so.
I’ve no axe to grind on JP’s behalf, I’ve never met the man but he seems to be doing an excellent job of getting our club back on it’s feet yet receives an awful amount of unfair criticism. Sorry you took my comment personally as I don’t include you in the often uninformed JP critics but I’m happy for you to have a go as I’m sure you’re happy for me argue the other POV.

116 Smethwick.
Not really accusing you of wanting to keep changing manager, just saying that when things don’t go right the average football fan will immediately look for a reason (I’m no different to anybody else) and the Manager is usually the first to come to mind, followed by the Chairman, the goalkeeper then the strikers etc. Some don’t know who they want they just know they don’t want Roy Hodgson.
As for the players, I agree as long as you seperate playing rubbish from not trying. Mulumbu played rubbish on Saturday but I didn’t see any less effort from him than normal, does he deserve criticism? Paul Robinson had many critics on here but I can honestly say I can’t remember a game where he gave less than 100% or ducked a tackle.
Last year PO floated about doing a bit here and a bit there but scored a lot of goals and was cheered to the rafters. This year he’s doing much the same but has temporarily lost his scoring touch and some at the ground actually groaned when his name was read out, how many of those were begging JP to give him whatever he wanted in the summer to keep him at the club?
If Roy takes us down then perhaps we need to look at the situation but as long as we stay up then he’s done a b****y good job, something Streetly explains brilliantly at 114.

There you go again, talking through your backside. Redknapp didn’t get away with that bung case. He was innocent in the first place. Glad to educate you.

93) Simple i had not read it.
I will attempt to be more elequant this time . Support and passion for a club is not measured on how much and how loud you sing.Too much stock and to much time is spent discussing this.
Other opinions whilst i am here , Stick with Roy we will move forward.
Get off PO’s back he is trying his confidence is low a few goals will sort that.
Tchoi shouldnt start he is an impact player.
Carson was and is a good goalkeeper.

129.Cheers I.M. Now I feel we can give ‘em a game. It would be interesting to see Fortuné and Long together with Pete coming on at about 60 minutes, depending on which of the first two is ticking. To Mulumbu I would say,
“tough guy, you’ve nothing to prove to us so just work your magic and don’t do anything naughty”. I don’t suppose we will, but I’d have the back 4 that played Fulham.

Well played Lock ! 13 posts in one thread. (and you didnt start till half way)
A monumental effort. Well done.
Your E+S ‘LOVE THE SOUND OF ME OWN VOICE’ badge, is, im sure, winging its way to you as You speak ;)
Second only to the Great Bully, who once offered 347 posts in 17 minutes on the now fabled “Wolves are bigger than Albion” thread of 97. ( he still managed to lose the argument of course, but im afraid his effort may never to be beaten )
As the great Jack Palance was once asked.. “Have you killed anyone today” ?
“No”, he replied, “but the day aint over yet”.
Still time Lock, Go for it.

And this isn’t aimed at you but I think Kev isn’t just talking about the ones that don’t sing, the bloke that sits next to me doesn’t and he’s a fanatic that follows the club everywhere. It’s also about the groaners that seem to have an automatic trigger at the first missed tackle or bad pass. I imagine they’re the same ones that boo the players off when things don’t go perfectly.
I know there’s also a bone of contention about whether it’s the players job to get the crowd going or vice versa. Just a thought, imagine Wigan go down and Victor Moses becomes available. Imagine ourselves and Stoke are the only clubs after him and offering identical terms. Might he think ‘I remember the way the Albion crowd turned on their own players and booed them off at the end whereas the Stokies got right behind their players.’ I wonder which club he’d choose?

Getting closer now peasents.
Just read the pubs in the CITY are open to all before and after the game.
Il buy any of the regulars on here a beer. I will be in the TAP. Straight out the station, past the theatre (yes we have one), do a left, and its on the left.
Quieter than the big boozers and a friendly place. Im sure you would be welcome, even in your baggie tops.
Will i see any of you in there ?
Do anyone of you go to away games ? (hardly away really is it, but the answer is probably no.)

Lonely,
as you live in Madchester, surely THIS is an away game for you, right?
Anyway, have to watch it at a distance,Mrs.Rocket does work for animal charities,we don’t like seeing our furry friends suffer close up,cats, dogs, wulfs, all the same.
It’s also difficult seeing so many grown men shedding tears.
When wulferhampton’s finest,Noddy Holder, went solo,he recorded ‘cryin’ in the rain’.
At the weekend, everyone else in w’ton can join him in the chorus.
Shane Long-fit,and on target.
P.O.-off the bench and on the pitch in the last minute-also on the scoresheet.
Maybe he doesn’t need a whole minute-
how many seconds did it take for him to ‘bag’ one in the last derby?
Still,at least you did manage to go on a run of one win-
but you’ll find Mick’s request to play 10 men every week was turned down by the F.A………

Yes you are correct Dave, but he is a Wolves fan.
Used to meet the loverly boys from Beechdale whilst growing up on the “poets” estate; on the cut in Rough wood. Oh the times we had, swapping football cards, swigging tizer, swapping ghost storys and cutting each other to ribbons on long lazy sunday afternoons.
Oh the 80′s.

read the article properly Lone. You might need to ask one of your Baggie friends to help you with it because there are some very long words in it. Some of them have as many as THREE silly bulls in them.
it states that there is no BLANKET BAN on Albion fans. Which is very charitable of them because, as you know, it can get rather nippy up North this time of year.
Personally I wouldn’t drink in that filthy big town if the Bathams was free anyway, and all i’d be scared of is the stray dogs and the strong possibility of contracting Veil’s disease.
Have a nice day…

Baggie in Langley
With the risk of Cantello’s wrath hanging over me I find myself repeating myself.
So you don’t attach much importance to the atmosphere at the Hawthorns at the moment then?
I agree that support and passion for you club isn’t measured by how much you sing but it is preferable to the only noise you make is shouting abuse at the team when it is still 0-0 after 30mins and we are struggling to hit top form and then follow it up with boo’s at half time.
I also agree with the other points you raised.

Being fairly sure this won’t be read, but I’ll post it anyway.
I firmly believe we have a case of great expectations. Megson bot us to believe we could be successful and got us promoted, but the football was dour. Mowbray brought entertaining football, but had no plan B. DiMatteo continued the entertaining football, but just didn’t have enough experience to stop a bad run.
One consistant theme running through all this was that we continually improved the team. We haven’t broken the bank, but we’ve managed to get better players each year.
Where am I going with this, well for the first time in a long while we have a good and proven manager. We also have a manager who has the knowledge and experience to get our team to attain greed league stability. But a lot of the fans see that we finished 11th last year and now want a top 4 finish. Except for last year, can anyone else remember a season in the prem where we haven’t been in the bottom three. Where a lot of the pundits haven’t wrote us off as a team most likely to be relegated.
Last year we couldn’t keep a clean sheet, this year we have poor form at home, next year it’ll be something else. Don’t let it get to you. One day we will be a top 4 team, we will have champions league football at the Hawthorns, both Manchester teams will get relegated.
Oh I see the nurse is coming with my medication. Don’t worry nurse, I’ll be good.
