‘You can tell it’s not going to be a quiet season’

Excuse the obvious pun but with that quote Mat Sadler has probably just worked out what life is like when you become a Saddler, writes Walsall blogger Mark Jones.

Four games in and it’s won one, drawn one, lost one plus the obligatory August cup exit (and let’s hope it’s the only one this month, right?). We’ve already had two sendings-off of our own, plus one for the opposition, two penalties conceded, a freak goal against and seen a two goal lead slip away.

We’ve also seen three successive distinctly below par refereeing displays but at least one of them saw fit to award us with a penalty – he’ll probably be disciplined or something. Even better than that was the outbreak of common sense that saw the overturning of Andy Butler’s red card in time for the match at Sheffield United.

Now some might say that the events at Brammell Lane should cause some concern. There is a certain degree of truth to this, being 2-0 up after almost an hour and then losing is never good, but I think there were more encouraging signs.

Sheffield United are the latest ‘big boys’ to visit the third tier of English football, joining their mates from across the city. The Blades have made a good start and will be challengers, yet on Tuesday night we more than matched them, creating the majority of chances, hit the woodwork twice, missed a good opportunity to score before we went 2 up, and, perhaps most importantly, played with confidence.

At the recent Meet the Manager Evening, Dean Smith talked about how he approached the difficult-looking run of fixtures at the end of last season. He rightly pointed out to his players this simple philosophy – the club is in League One, the opposition are in League One therefore they have every right to be on the same pitch as them.

I think we are now starting to really see the benefits of this policy, the players believe in the manager and are beginning to believe in themselves.

We usually put one over on one of the fallen giants at some stage of the season, a couple of victories over Leeds, draws at Champions-elect Leicester and Norwich and the improbable triumph over Southampton all spring to mind. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t add Danny Wilson’s side to that list.

But beating the ‘big boys’ isn’t the be all and end all of what Deano’s Walsall are all about these days. I think there’s enough evidence to suggest we’re heading in the right direction this season.

And I don’t think we’re in for a quiet one either.

I like Walsall, its a well run club, its a nice ground, BUT it has a major problem its punching out of its league. It really needs to be a non league or league 2 club. I have been a couple of times and could see they had a max of maybe 1500 fans. Also they have Wolves, West Brom, Villa, Blues !! they just can compete

Bilbrookwolves we could say the same about Wolves in the Premier League. We are certainly not punching out of our league and have been in the Championship too in recent years. If all you can do is criticise our club why not stay on the Wolves board and criticise your own team?

bilbrookwolves. Remenber the 3,000 gates you lot used to get in the 80′s? Best if you keep to talking about your own club as you only make a prat of yourself when talking about others.

Please don’t feed the troll lads.
When people have such low self esteem it makes them feel “big” in their lives to post factually incorrect posts about another football club for some reason.
All his little friends will be so proud of him when he goes back to school in a few weeks.
    Bless him!

James Davis: there is only so many times he can write “Mick’s gorra gew” on their message board.

Bilbrook: Being as it appears acceptable to opposing fans to tell us what we “really need”, i’ll tell you what your lot really need. You need to remember where you were in the Mid 1990′s: Division 4, crowds plummeting and watching you being dumped out of the FA Cup by Chorley! It happened once, it can happen again, so don’t come on here crowing!

I think that the problem here is that Billbrookwolves is punching out of his League. He should really get onto a Manchester United blog and give them a laugh for a change I think.

Come on, lads, Bilbrookwolves is great value.

Coupled with his suggestion on a previous topic that due to our perceived lack of success we should relocate to Telford and “try to do a Wimbledon” (clearly the answer to our “problems”, as since their psuedo-formation, MK Dons haven’t enjoyed a single season in a higher division than us- nice try, though), this one is an absolute cracker.

Lets say we were “punching above our division” (sic [a phrase that doesn't even make sense]), even though history pretty much confirms the 3rd tier is our natural level. Punching consistently above your weight- the correct turn of cliche- is something that’s seen as admirable & a measure of success in all walks of life. Plus, it’s hilariously ironic that such a statement would come from a supporter of a club who, as many Wolves fans are quick to remind anyone who’ll listen, have spent copious amounts of money in recent history and have, by anyone’s standards, a sizeable fanbase… and as such can be pretty much summed up as perennial UNDERachievers.

Keep the coming, Bilbrook. With your observations akin to throwing tennis balls at a battleship, you’re making a lot of noise, but ultimately making a sorrowfully hilarious specatacle of yourself.

But he’s getting the attention he was searching for on here isn’t he boys?? So let’s get our focus back down the Wednesbury Road instead of Whitmore Reans eh? Deano’s focussed as are the team.. and so should we be, in getting behind the lads! UTS, Ginger Mourinho!
