Will – the spin-doctor of Stratford

During his three-day visit, which took in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Chinese premier Wen Jiabao revealed he was a big fan of Shakespeare, writes Peter Rhodes.

No surprises there.

Young Will was the best spin-doctor the Establishment ever had, never missing an opportunity to big-up the Tudors and rubbish their rivals.

If he were writing in Beijing today, Shakespeare would be depicting the  bespectacled Mr Wen as a big, conquering hero and singing the praises of the People’s Liberation Army.

Dissenters would be portrayed in a negative light. If you think the real Richard III was a spindly, malevolent hunchbacked serial killer, you have Shakespeare to thank.

Will was a brilliant writer but he knew which side his noodles were buttered.
