Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Albion’s future plans
Thursday 12th May 2011, 9:36AM BST.
Roy Hodgson has sat down with Jeremy Peace and Dan Ashworth this week to hammer out our summer transfer plans, and it feels fantastic to know our Head Coach is constructing a squad for another crack at the Premier League, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
Hopefully by guaranteeing survival with three games to go, now two, our plans for strengthening our squad can steal a march on others.
There are some big decisions to be made, who will go, what positions need new recruits, and what do we do when the big boys come knocking for our stars?
I am sure all of the above has been discussed along with finances and consequently which category we can afford to shop in this season.
The advantage of having two games left and being safe is that Roy has the opportunity to take a look at some of the fringe players he will need to make a decision on. Not that it fills me with confidence for our games against Everton and Newcastle if we are playing the likes of Joe Mattock, Marek Cech, and Gianni Zuiverloon. However I don’t think Roy will play the reserves when you consider the financial rewards of finishing as high in the league as possible, but I think he will give some game time to those he will need to make a decision on.
In my opinion there are a number of players who need moving on. Marek Cech, Giles Barnes, Gianni Zuiverloon, Joe Mattock, and Ishmael Miller are five players I see as surplus to requirements. Big Ish promised so much when he first came to us but has gone backwards in recent seasons, whether that’s due to injury or not, I have never been convinced he could make it at this level.
Another player who has failed to make an impact this season has been Pablo Ibanez, however his performances have offered something, although I am perplexed as to what it is, but something tells me he has the qualities to play at this level but something just hasn’t clicked. It was a similar story when his compatriot Borja Valero crossed our shores to give the Premier League a go. I understand his loan deal is to be made permanent automatically this summer, however like many deals nowadays it is shrouded in mystery, although rumours persist that we made a healthy profit on our 4.7million record transfer.
Chris Wood heads a lengthy list of promising young players at the club and although Chris has made huge strides this season at League One Champions Brighton scoring ten goals in the process, another season on loan gaining first team experience is probably in store. That probably goes for Craig Dawson too, who I hear you ask, Craig is the young centre back we signed and loaned back to Rochdale, although I say centre back an amazing statistic is his goal scoring record. He has scored an amazing 10 goals this season while Rochdale just missed out on the play offs, earning him rave reviews.
Other fringe players who will be under the Hodgson microscope will be Marc Antoine Fortune, Abdoulaye Meite whose contract is up this summer, and Somen Tchoyi. Somen has been used sparingly this season although he has shown glimpses that he could be more than a little useful as an impact player. Marc Antoine Fortune has been a big disappointment for me this season, during his first spell with us he played really well and made the 4-5-1 formation work for us by consistently holding the ball up. Due to Peter Odemwingies amazing form he has struggled for games and he looks to be suffering from a lack of confidence when he has got on the pitch, another big decision to be made by Roy.
There are so many decisions to be made by our management team this summer. Even sitting here at my desk playing fantasy manager with my beloved club I find myself scratching my head. Of course deciding on who should go, and then getting someone to buy them is another matter, I will watch with interest.
In coming transfers feels a little clearer for me, we need greater quality to improve, that’s fairly obvious, but in which areas?
Right back has been a problem position for us for quite a while and although Steven Reid has filled in effectively this season we need a specialist full back. Steven Reid and Gonzalo Jara are both flexible in the respect that they can cover a number of different positions, but I see both as midfielders deputising at right back.
Up front we have been blessed by the arrival of Peter Odemwingie, his performances and goals have been one of the many reasons why we have had such a good season. But for next season we are going to need more strength in depth, hopefully Dan Ashworth and his scouting team have already earmarked two more strikers to join the ranks.
Our other position that needs addressing is at centre half. Although we have Gabriel Tamas, Jonas Olsson, Abdoulaye Meite, Pablo Ibanez and Paul Scharner available I only feel total confidence in Jonas Olsson. We need a steady Eddie next to our Swedish star and I am sure Roy has our clean sheet problem high on his agenda for next season. The rumour mill has already begun to churn up names linked with our club and it is interesting to see they have all been defensive players so watch this space.
As for our game with the toffees this weekend it feels so nice to be going to a game pressure free, it feels all warm and snuggly, a bit like when you put an old pair of trainers or slippers on.
I have enjoyed the high tension full throttle six pointers this season, but it also feels nice to be safe, and my blood pressure needs a break, and so do the people who sit in front of me in the Smethwick!!
I hope everyone can make it into the Vine after the game for our end of season pint and chat, I am looking forward to meeting many of you for the first time and chewing over the fat, or maybe I won’t have the barbeque and just stick to beer!

Have to agree with your point concerning being able to start planning for next season with games to spare, unlike others who at this moment in time do not know which league they will be playing in.
Good well balanced blog. I agree with all the players named, and I said much the same thing about Fortune only yesterday. If I did have to disagree on one point though, it would be Tchoyi. I truly believe the guy has the potential to be a top class Prem player. Admittedly he looked jaded Sunday, which was disappointing given he was handed a start, but even then, there was still the little twists and turns, and for a big fella he sure can sprint.
Keep Tchoyi, he’s worth at least another season.
Hi mate, i didnt suggest getting rid of Tchoyi, i agree after a settling in season he could be a big player for us next season, in every sense of the owrd.
corrected, (note to slap myself!)
I’d love to see Tchoyi brought up to scratch, and play at centre forward. six-four’s worth of quick feet alongside the Cheetah. He’s good with both feet and should play in the middle of the park, he is wasted on the wing. Lot more flexibility than Crouch (Spurs). Has all the attributes, Give him a run, in my opinion.

Hi Jarrod,
Long time reader first time poster today. Excellent blog, I feel very exciting times ahead for us all down the Hawthorns. I just think we need to be careful as to who we bring into the squad over the summer, I cant see us going out and breaking the bank on players because thats not how we do things and as the 2nd season is always the toughest we need a good mix of common sense and risk on who we sign. That being sad I have all faith that the people at the club know exactly what they are doing and will deliver.
Exciting times ahead for the Baggies!! Boing Boing!

I often wondered why JP invested his money in a football club. It can be the surest way to make a small fortune, as long as you start with a big one! It would appear he has even won over the snipers who would have his fortune made even smaller by big spending, (see or hear all comments on Villa made by their supporters). I’m a football fan, yet if I won the Euro Lottery I’d buy gold bars and hide them away with a small armoury for protection. It certainly wouldn’t go on players and their gross wages! So, is he, (JP), doing a good job? OH YES ! Just watch the speed he moves when the club wobbles.

Cyril,
Did you see the “Lord Alan Sugar” program?. Be grateful that Jeremy Peace thinks along the same lines. He says “Living above your means, is not business”. For the clubs that do (Have massive debts). Doomsday is nigh. Apart from Manchester United, of course.

Good blog and you’ve covered an awful lot of ground with your appraisal of our squads needs.
The main point I agree with is the need for a partner for Jonas and if we could sign Steady Eddie I feel we would really be moving forward.
Where I disagree, and I know he’s had many chances (but not lately) is moving on (especially at a financial loss) Gianni Zuiverloon. This young player seems to have it all and Roy may be the one to get it from him.
I also think we let Leon Barnett go a little to soon. Defensive players always seem to take that little bit longer to fully develop, hence our interest in McAuley which might be a good thing.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating so they say and Jonas himself is certainly a better player than the one we signed.
Re Gianni Zuiverloon i agree. He has shown he could be good and maybe under Hodgson maybe could be again. He does have youth on his side, who knows.

Let’s get some names out here to discuss lads, i think we need a proper hard organised, leader in the back 4 alongside Olson. This name might not really set he world alight but someone like Faye from Stoke. He captained them in the 1st year and he does the simple things well and is very vocal. Anyone know who Olson play’s alongside for Sweden? Maybe if they are experienced then it’s worth considering? Collins from the Villa? Does anyone see decent players in the sides likely to go down – Rodagella or nZogbia?

Hi Jarrod-
I could sense the enjoyment and tinge of excitement you must feel, putting this blog together after a tense and eventful season.
Not everyone will feel the same way,but I’m more than happy to have JP and Roy Hodgson together planning our club’s future.
I think people have to stand back and look at the whole picture regarding clubs in this country, and I’m sure we have a Chairman and Manager that many others in the game rate highly.
One word of warning-we may be planning early, but some projects and deals take time to put into place, and some of our best players weren’t signed until August last year,so the key word could be-PATIENCE!!

Hey Cantello, how many are going to the Vine after the game, do you know?
As my name suggests, I live in Shropshire so don’t normally come to the get togethers, but as it was the last home game, I fancied a few beers in the Vine, just so I could but faces to names. Is the Vine within walking distance of The Hawthorns?

Hi,I wasn’t at the Vine for last year’s do,so it’s difficult to say how many will go,but based on the feedback so far, there seems to be up to a dozen looking very interested.
From the Hawthorns it’s probably a 10-15 min. walk, and I gave the directions on a previous post the other day (Roebuck St.).
Might see you there.

As per usual an excellent blog, but you have not covered potential pitfalls.
I have borrowed your half empty glass for a moment, and can see a number of our leading lights being courted by richer clubs.
It`s no secret that Brunty and PO will be targeted, and unless you have been living on Mars, Mulumbu is certain to be high on a number of clubs wish lists.
Sorry for the negativity folks, but i do see a summer of seige for our chairman.
On to the keeps and let goes, under Roy`s stewardship i would like to see Zuvi given a go, i think the manager could make him into the player we thought he was, and Pablo always looked quality.
A pre season with Roy, and no pressures of needing immediate resuls could see a difference in these two undoubtedly talented footballers.
Agree entirely about the others you mention.
Tying your post in with CR78′s at 8. If you were in a siege in these circumstances can you think of anybody else you’d rather have organising the defences than JP? I know I can’t, I’d hate to play him at poker.

David Sullivan said the other day that he and Gold may have to put another 40 million of their own money into West Ham just to ‘prop’ them up.
So if anyone does feel the urge to attack the way Albion are being run,I’d suggest checking out the hugh problems other clubs have, before passing judgement.

I think the club have said that there will be a limited number of players joining us with quality rather than quantity being the key. If that is the case the number of players leaving will also be limited as the size of our squad is relatively small. I feel sorry for Meite who has made a major contribution to the team until the last two games when errors have cost us goals. I think one or two of the regular first team players may go including James Morrison who struggles physically at this level despite scoring some great goals. Mr Hodgson has not brought any of his own players yet and I think we may be surprised when he does. One certain thing is that when established premier league players like Paul Scharner says so many good things about the club it may encourage others to follow.

Agree about Tchoyi and Ibanez.
Maybe even Zuiverloon under Hodgson as someone has suggested, may come good.
I have said in previous posts – don’t ask me when, that I remember how long it took Willie Johnson to settle at The Albion when we bought him.
He was quite average for 18 months then exploded into the brilliant player I remember.
People are different and some struggle with changes brought about by transfers. They and their families struggle with the language and a new culture but after a while they settle and we see what they truly have in their locker.
I would keep Tchoyi, Ibanez, Fortune, Tamas and Jara as players who could be moulded by Sir Roy and improve further.
I fear we may have to let Brunt go as the money will be too good for Jezzer but i hope not!
Need a strong leader/captain type alongside Olsson and Maybe Andy Johnson as backup to Odemwingie?
Feeling all warm and snuggly like you Jarrod.
Hope the boys turn up on Saturday!!!

Jarrod,
Great blog which pretty much covered everything, I agree that it does help having those couple of extra weeks on the other clubs who don’t know what league they are going to be in next season and I’m sure that we have already have a number of names on our radar.
I agree with the areas that we need improvements and for me reinforcements in the spine of our team are a must as we all know our defensive issues however when injuries/suspensions have piled up towards the end of the season we have looked a bit bare in midfield as well. Whenever we are missing either Mulumbu or Scharner we lack that gritty battling core too. Obviously a couple of strikers to ease the pressure off Sir Odemwingie would be another priority
Speaking of which I’m hoping we can fend off any interest in our key players such as PO as it will be just as important to keep them as it will be to make new additions if we are going to progress and work towards establishing ourselves in this league
It will be an interesting summer at the Hawthorns with both departures and arrivals so let’s enjoy our final two games and see what the transfer window brings when it comes
We’ve done excellent this season, here’s hoping we can kick on next season and make it another memorable one under Roy.

The close season is as exciting as the actual season… checking the web every two hours to see who’s gone where (and how much) and to question the signings or ask “who’s he”. But following our track record over the last few years I have great confidence in the “Three Baggatiers” (JP DA RH). We have picked up some good signings and without RH imput… just think what we can do with his experience and also being a second year Prem League team. Better players will be more interested. I think it will be a good (if not great) year ahead.

Agree with most tjings that have been said, but i would keep Zuiverloon as I still think he has potential to be a quality player for us, if we could get him back into the form he was at when he first joined us when Man utd were sniffing around him that would be great. One last thing I agree with what Gaz said above about signing Rodellaga from Wigan, he would be a class signing. Boing Boing

I’ve always rated N’Zogbia and when he came to our place this season he was a nightmare for our defence. Not to be negative but a couple of problems I could see with him however is that other more established teams will show an interest in him if Wigan go down or not so would make it even more difficult for us to compete in the wages department.
Plus I don’t think his attitude would suit the Albion as he has been known for his antics in the past and I wouldn’t want a bad apple to ruin a good bunch.
There are defiantly other good players that could become available from other teams such as Al Habsi (on loan from Bolton) who has been mentioned a couple of times on here lately

I think a lot of our fringe players have shown enough on occassion to say they are decent players – but the prem is all about consistancy – thats why the same teams win all the prizes. I like Cech, Tamas, Pablo and Zuvi – but can they be relied on for 30 odd games at this level ????
I would like to see us go for Upson to partner Olsson – I still think Reid and Jara are good enough at RB unless there is a real star out there, and I think one from Dorrens, Morrison and Cox will go – and I would think it will be Mozza as he will bring a better fee than Cox.
Also see MAF moving on if we get AJ or similar – plus a couple of decent loanees in the class of Vela.
If we can do some of that then I would be quite hopeful for us to progress again next year.
p.s – I still think Scott carson is a good keeper !!!

Good shout with Upson, he would be available as West Ham would be looking to sell if they do go down, and he did go do the last World Cup so must have something about him.

Ba is a shout, not sure if he’s on loan or signed for West Ham though. Were still gonna struggle with some signings if other clubs are going to sniff about, especially as one of the promoted clubs are another London club who are going to be able to offer big wages. We need a right back though, a centre half, maybe another hard scrappy midfielder as competition although if we sign a right back then Reid can compete in there and a forward.
Stephen Kelly at Fulham?
Cuellar at the Villa if he’s not getting picked?
Wes Brown (perhaps a bit ambitious)
What about a gamble on hargreaves from Man U on a pay as you play deal? Our physio seems to get the injuries sorted in terms of Barnes and Thomas who other clubs wouldn’t touch?
I’m not sure we’d want Wes Brown as I don’t think he’d have the attitude or desire after spending an entire career at Old Trafford.
However if we did get him, at least it’d stop that moment where you’re skim-reading the sports section of a newspaper and something penetrates your sub-consciousness, you quickly switch your eyes back to the sentence that reads ‘Wes Brown’ when you thought it said ‘West Brom’. If he played for us, that article would be about West Brom!!

Great post Jarrod. Cannot really add much to it. I am not sure about Ibanez, seems okay but we always seem to lose when he plays! First signing must be PO on a long term deal. Then build the side round the nucleus of good players that we have, Olssen, Shorey, Mulumbu, Brunt, Scharner, Dorrans and PO. I would add JT to this list but someone needs to have a word with him and tell him that he is faster than any full back that he plays against. I can only assume that he has had the defensive angle of his game highlighted to him since Sir Roy arrived. JT is one of the few players we have that cam change a game on his own.
You mention Valero, strangely with Mulumbu and Schanrer, I actually believe that he would not fit into the way we play.
Once thing about being a baggies supporter now is that with Sir Roy in charge, I feel that JP has confidence in him, that we will buy wisely and the future looks very bright.
It’ll be nice just to enjoy Saturday – stress and pressure free!

I don’t think theres much disagreement on who should go and who should stay – Scott Carson apart of course. and we all recognise the need to lock in Chris Brunt, Odemwingie, Mulumbu,Olssen and maybe others, but I think we’re in for a turbulent and very interesting summer as Roy makes his mark on the squad. His comments on Kuscak and the Ipswich CH on the website today are very revealing. Goalkeepers, at least 3 defenders, a midfield playmaker (like Murphy at Fulham when Roy was there), and at least one forward is what I anticipate, and that would mean more outgoings than just the fringe players. Exciting times ahead.

Jarrod
You make a good point about the sides we’ll be putting out in the final games given the financial rewards at stake, I don’t think Jeremy would be happy if we fielded a weakened side.
However if Roy can get away with it, I’d like to see the likes of Hurst and Thorne getting half an hour of Premiership action under their belt. This can only be of more benefit to the player and the club in the long-term than it can be giving the likes of Cech and Miller half an hour if they’re certain to be moving on in the summer.

I said a few weeks back, I think it was after the Chelsea game that JT seemed to be coasting in attack and defence and wondered if he was carrying an injury. Coincidentally when we’re safe he was left out of Sunday’s game with a groin strain. I wonder if he’s been carrying it for a while because he’d stopped taking the fullback on whereas previously beating the FB once was never enough he would have to go back and do it a couple of more times.

Exciting times people. Proud to be a Baggie as ever, but one minor point. How stupid can anyone be to schedule a cup final on the same day as many teams final home game of the season, when blokes/ladies will want to go out for a tot with their mates after the game? I for one have hardly ever missed an FA Cup Final on the box, what with the build up and everything. I know it sounds a bit sad,but cup final day was always a tradition in my family. In their younger days my dad and his mates would even make a weekend of it in London, even though they weren’t going to the game. The FA moan that managers and chairmen are losing interest in the cup, then some bone dome comes up with an idea like this. I know about the Champions League Final at Wembley etc,but it just seems pants to me.
