Frankly, the pain is still intense
Friday 25th February 2011, 10:07AM GMT.
Well I don’t know about you, but I’m still smarting, writes Wolves blogger Tim Spiers.
The wounds created by Carlos Vela’s heartbreaking injury time goal are still gaping and sore and show no sign of healing until 5pm on Saturday at least.
This is mourning usually associated with play-off defeats – and we’ve had a bit of practice at how to cope with those over the years – but nope, I just can’t shake it off.
That moment, when the hitherto sturdy Wayne Hennessey failed to hold onto James Morrison’s awkward shot and Vela nipped in first to prod home the rebound, will live with me forever.
In between the spill and Vela’s touch I remember groaning and emitting an agonising, disbelieving cry of ‘no’.
Thinking about it the noise wasn’t dissimilar to that of Kevin Keegan’s rather embarrassed yelp on ITV when David Batty missed from the spot at France ’98.
For less than half a second I was convinced it was offside, but the damn linesman wasn’t playing ball.
And then the boinging, the endless and utterly nonsensical boinging. What an absolute sickening sight for any Wolves fan at the Hawthorns.
What does it even mean anyway? They look like a bunch of overexcited Neanderthals who’ve just discovered pogo sticks and learned how to say the word boing.
My stomach’s turning just thinking about it.
Have I made my point yet? It still hurts.
Anyway, on we go to Blackpool and other one of those must-win six-pointers that we can’t lose or draw but if we do we can still stay up and we’ll say the say all over again next week.
Yes it’s a very important match and we’re in dire need of three points.
But I’m not so keen on Mick McCarthy calling it “a game we have got to win”.
Our stoic manager is never one to hype a game up more than it already needs doing, quite the opposite in fact, so it was surprising to read the quote.
Perhaps he’s looking to galvanise the team into positive action, after they retreated so readily in the second half at the Hawthorns.
But after Blackpool there are 30 points still to play for and I’d wager we fare better against Aston Villa and Tottenham than we do against the Seasiders and the Albion.
In fact many messages coming from the club are becoming a little tiresome, with too much “we played well, we were unlucky, we’ll do the business next week” talk, and ultimately not enough action.
You can’t so much blame the players, who must hate being dragged in front of a microphone after a bad result, but it’d be nice to hear some honesty once in a while.
One of the few players who offers refreshingly conscientious answers is our captain Karl Henry.
As the man himself recently admitted, he hasn’t been at his best since coming back from injury, and the subject of Henry’s selection is one that seems to be dividing Wolves fans.
No matter what Fabio Capello thinks – and I trust his judgement less than I’d trust David Sullivan to give me a good deal on a second-hand motor – Henry has been well below his best lately.
At his best he is the crucial pivot in our side, the link between defence and attack.
He expertly smothers the opposition, not with wild sliding challenges, as some neutrals would have you believe, but with calm, skilful shielding of the ball and clever interceptions.
The man can pick a great pass, too, occasionally sweeping it 50 yards or so out to the flank and his positional sense is excellent.
But when the former Ashmore Park-born midfielder is off the pace, as he has been too often recently, then we’re a far poorer side.
Maybe it’s a lack of confidence; perhaps stemming from the battering he took from all quarters earlier this season when the media targeted him for a few challenges.
I watched Henry warm up at the Hawthorns last week and he drilled a few decent shots in the onion bag past Marcus Hahnemann, self-assuredly finding the corner on a few occasions.
During the game, around 20 minutes in, came a chance to strike a bouncing ball from 20 yards on the half volley.
But instead of getting his head over the ball and putting his laces through it, Henry leaned back and embarrassingly side-footed an almost vertical shot into the stands.
I don’t want to pick on Karl in particular as he’s a very likeable chap, a good captain and a great player on his day who has often been criminally undervalued by some supporters.
But the issue of what to do with him is a microcosm of the extremely difficult decisions which Mick McCarthy faces between now and May 22.
Does Mick have the nerve to drop his captain for what would be (I think) the first time since he took over in 2006, or would sticking with Henry the player on and give him a timely confidence boost?
Does he plunder on with just Kevin Doyle up front, despite the fact the Irishman was hardly ever in the penalty box on Sunday, rendering the many crosses of Matt Jarvis meaningless?
Will he continue to leave our two most prolific goalscorers, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Steven Fletcher, on the bench?
If he switches to 4-4-2, would he dare drop Nenad Milijas, one of our most consistent performers this season, in favour of the brilliant Jamie O’Hara, or fit both of them in the team?
Will he go with the experienced but ageing, unfit legs of Jody Craddock in defence or stick with the fast-improving but occasionally error-prone Richard Stearman?
Where, and if, will he play Kevin Foley, consistently our most reliable and cool-headed performer?
Decisions, decisions, and extremely crucial ones at that. McCarthy has yet to find a winning formula against the teams around us, particularly at Molineux, in the past two seasons but he needs to discover one soon.
Charlie Adam is suspended for Blackpool, a colossal boost for us which we must take advantage of.
We can’t make the same mistakes we did against Albion, sitting back against a Championship-standard defence, and a few calculated risks must be made.
It’s got to be two up front and four in midfield and in Adam’s absence the need for a tackling midfielder, against a Blackpool team which isn’t overly physical anyway, is lessened.
Kevin Foley performed well at Anfield playing the holding role in a 4-4-2 and he can do it again, alongside Milijas, with O’Hara wide left and Jarvis wide right.
Football is a game of opinions but for Wolves the only one which matters is that of Mick McCarthy.
For all our sakes let’s hope he finds the elusive formula sooner rather than later.

“They look like a bunch of overexcited Neanderthals who’ve just discovered pogo sticks and learned how to say the word boing.”
That’s because they’re a bunch of over-excited etc.
Thankfully, they’re nailed on for relegation.

Our problems have always been the same – we have no real threat up front and couldn’t strike a match never mind a goal. KD put himself everywhere, but is not in the box enough, when Jarvis is tearing down the wing towards the goal we should have enough intelligent bodies to make their way into the box, we don’t though do we.
I’m not being negative just realistic, I think we are doomed for the drop, too many mistakes and not enough fire power even though we have played well many times..

Forget last week, its gone, done with, over. We need to get in the here and now and beat Blackpool tomorrow, which I think we will. Come On You Wolves!!!

Charlie Adams suspended is the best news I’ve heard all week. Still not confident of getting the win though.
Spot on with your blog mate.

Hi Noisy mate,Woke up to a dreary grey wet Malta this morning.Off to the local later to watch Wolves thump Blackpool followed by England hammering the Froggies,What a tonic that would be.Enjoy your day.

Enjoyed your blog, Tim and think you gave a very fair assessment of Henry’s position. But I don’t believe his dip in form has anything to do with the early season criticism but results from the injury which may be bothering him still. I also think we fans sometimes underestimate how difficult it is to get back to real match fitness after injury though O’Hara is a striking counter-example. I am all for keeping Henry and think Mick will. I think he is very sensitive to not denting players’ confidence as with Zubes after Bolton.
I also think he should stick with the team which started at the Hawthorns..as we saw in the first half, it is not a defensive formation necessarily and has huge attacking potential. I think our 2nd half retreat on Sunday had more to do with the situation and a problem in holding on to the ball in midfield. Great news that Adam is not playing.I predict 3-1 win.

Foley a right back in midfield,1 striker at home against a team who will play with 3 what planet you on mate.We need to start scoring more and winning draws will not suffice. As Tim points out Jarvis supplies cross after cross but who too?.
Sorry Cullis time to be positive 4-4-2 Jarvis,O’Hara,Miljas and Hammill,Doyle/Fletcher/Seb pick any 2.
MM’S negativity is the reason we are where we are not just my opinion results/stats bear it out.

2. PeteNuts. If we are nailed on for relegation what league do you think the bottom club will be playing in next season?.
Oh, and please don’t bang on about how easy your run in is, how well have you done against ‘em first time around?.
We will be doing the nailing at the custard bowl, leaving you with no chance of staying up. Look on the positive side, at least you are now used to getting turned over by us Baggies so it shouldn’t be too much of a shock!.

Henry OUT – Foley IN
Slightly disagree with your comment that this is not a must win game. May be not a must win but certainly a winnable game which if we don’t win, will only render our survival chances as miniscal. So why don’t I say it THIS IS ACTUALLY A MUST WIN GAME!
Fair analysis, He will not drop Henry although he should, he will not pick Fletcher, SEB, he will not play Foley RB, he will keep finding a game for Ward, the wingers will keep putting crosses in from the wing to Doyle.
We have had all season to sort this out and we still don’t have our best side or settled team, because he dosen’t know
If we get a goal lead we will drop defensive.
He will keep on with late Subs and poor subs.
However he might just might surprise us all!
He should have been sacked, and for anyone thinking he has done a great job, and we beat those top sides etc, we are bottom of the league and there are two men to blame McCarthy and Morgan.
Am i right in thinking Charlie Adam is suspended? That cant be a bad thing.
Mick has to learn that to BOLSTER a 1-0 lead we need to protect that lead by scoring another goal,he has to play in the opponents half for the LAST FIFTEEN minutes, we may get a goal, we may not, but at least we will be protecting the slim lead we have,or even a point if we are level. GO FOR IT MICK, it looks like we have nothing to lose!
Since Fletcher was bought I’ve been lost as to Mick’s ‘plan’, if he has one. Doyle is a great hardworking player but HE IS NOT A GOALSCORER. I still think Elokobi should get the two goals against United.
Would Mick for once exhibit his rare ‘talent’ for playing players out of position and try Fletch and SEB up front with Doyle behind like an attacking midfielder or (God Forbid) keep him and Henry benched for the start?
As you say, Doyle NEVER seems to get in the box, so why play him alone? We have Jarvis, Hunt, O’Hara and soon Kightly running the wings, banging in crosses to the opposition defences – no striker………….
To all Wolves fans, what a bunch we are. After every let down we say ‘the next one will be the crunch one’. After every win we think we’re on the up.
It’s that type of support that keeps this club together and makes it worth supporting. The only thing that goes Boing Boing is a Yo Yo.
Didn’t anyone else pick up on the turning point in the second half was when Henry held on to the ball too long in our own half after some great team possession and passing he got tackled and allow baggies in?
After that we were on the back foot as it gave them some belief….
One shot on target is just not good enough against a team whose defence is a lot worse than ours, I feel there is no argument….
I said to my son that was the turning point of the game it was like he was going round a mini roundabout and then the team started kicking the ball out, miss kicking but they do say follow your leader by example, some how i think Henry thinks he’s a better player than he is
Report abuse
Sorry, surely the turning point was Jarvis’s miss?!?!
If that had gone in there would have been no way back for them,
Can not understand why people are so quick to blame the best tackler in our team for our lack of attacking prowess!
If we play poorly and loose to Blackpool tomorrow, Mick should be sacked.
No excuses, no whining about what he has done for us in the past, no bleating about how unlucky we were. Mick knows how important this game is for us, if he cannot get the team to play well and beat Blackpool at home he deserves the boot.

Maybe a serious conversation between MM&KH to place the fella on touchline leave as a kind of internship. Get him watching and reflecting and coming on for 10 mins latterly. He contributes precious little as far as I can see. He stays in his comfort zone and makes the rest of us anything but comfortable. What kind of example does he, does MM, claim that he is setting?
Okay. Why, on the eve of one of the kind of games that we HAVE to win if we are going to stay up, have the Wolves board leaked out a statement about the kind of provisions we have to make if we go down? Do they not have any concept as to the time and place for these kinds of things?
@5
Now now, there’s no need to take it out on us. You should be praying for us to stay up – after all, the six points that we’d be taking from you if we go down as well, could turn out to be important.
Can we nick Odemwingie off you when you go down? He looks half-decent. You can hang on to the rest, mind.

All the comments [or most ] seem to say the same thing.McCarthy OUT.Come on,he hasn`t got a clue.Players out of position every week, his favourites in every week,no tactical nowhow, etc etc etc.He goes through the motions during a match because he`s in front of a crowd or TV cameras.I see Moxey has come oyt of the woodwork and is now talking about selling players if we go down. What a wonderful confidence builder he is.Not much of a Wolves man is he?Well Stoke got rid of him, that speaks volumes.
I totally agree that we have to have two strikers in the starting line up tomorrow. Although Henry has not been at his best of late, I would still include him along with O’Hara and Milijas as the othe two midfielders. With Jarvis on the wing it will mean no starting place for Foley.
I still believe that we can stave off relegation but we must start winning games.
5) As Paul Merson said last week on Soccer Saturday last week’s Brummie v Black Country derby was a must win for you. Time will tell but I cannot see you getting a win at Stoke or Blues and then you have the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs, so what Pete is saying is about right. At the end of the day you have not kept a clean sheet for 25 games and Woy Hodgson ain’t going to turn that round very easily with your current defence.
Very good assessment of form of players. One thing we cannot do is start with the same eleven this week and I like the look of your team but there is no way Mad Mick will go with it unfortunately!
A plan seems to be evolving that includes preparing the fans for relegation by suggesting that several players will be looking to move on and stay in the top flight. Most of those mentioned would not really perform in the Championship anyway and they certainly do not perform in the Premiership. Its a strange decision to expand the ground when you cannot fill it.
Just read the article regarding selling players. I would be gutted if we went down, and it would make matters worst if we lost all those players. I could understand a few of them, but surely, for the good fo the club would mean to keep hold of as many of our players as possible. I understand that the lsit was compiled by e & s, so im hoping Moxeys statement just means 1 or 2 players and not a cleareout of all our decent prem performers.
The team have left it late, making it even harder for ourselves, Lets stick together and supports the hell out of our team home and away. Lets show the rest of the prem why we have such a good support, and hopefully the players and management can show the prem why we belong in the prem.

Ok, lets go for this one MM..I agree with some of you about selection..#7 and #10..but dont think MM should be fired YET..
Please play with 2 strikers, our wingers crosses the ball and we have more bodies in pen area..even though Doyle can play a part in that i would prefer SEB and Fletch as they are very sharp finishers.
Henry im not gonna say anything more of ive said enough, but would like to see an offensive midfield to provide attackers and wingers with the ball..
Foley have a place in my team at RB…Elokobi or Zubar to the left..Craddock maybe instead of Berra but not totally sure of his match fitness..

Mr Moxey, despite your apparent support for our so called manager it seems you have accepted that relegation is virtually unavoidable with your poorly timed statement about selling players. What message do you think it gives out to players and supporters alike. So negative just like MMs tactics.

It would appear that Moxey and Co have already got the plans in place for a season in the Championship next year.

Jarvis and Doyle haven’t got a goal between them. That’s the worry in trying to score more goals than Blackpool. Even without Charlie boy I doubt whether Ollie will change his tactics and not flow forward in search of goals.
Not been a good week with THAT equaliser and now the E&S putting words into Moxey’s mouth. If you look carefully, what Moxey says is commonsense and realistic. We all know today’s players hold the power. He did NOT quote that list of Wolves players who might be sold, it’s just the E&S trying to make headlines.
What it does do, especially after the announcement of a profit, is get the usual minority agitated and massing in a telephone box near Molineux Street.
Selling papers is E&S’s aim
Scoring goals has to be Wolves’

It has to be the one who picks the players who are not up to it,with defensive tactics i just do not understand.

I think play 4-4-2 (Below) and really go for it, if Mick decides to change things we have the squad to do it now after injuries.

Interesting blog Tim. I’m still to be convinced with what Henry actually adds to the team?
It’s been said on here before by others that the stats actually say our results are better without Henry in the team.
His negative play stunts the teams progress and I for one would’nt be bothered to see him have a spell on the sidelines, but it won’t happen as MM has already said he is rewarding him for his poor form by playing him??
And finally a point for debate – should we manage to retain our premiership status should we reward our manager with a new contract and further funds to spend?
I for one think he has outstayed his welcome and would’nt trust him to squander another £18 million on players that he won’t play or are’nt good enough – perhaps if he’d bought 3 quality players with that money that were better than what we have that could of come straight in and made a difference then maybe we would’nt be propping the league up now?
If we stay up then progress needs to be made, we can’t settle for survival year on year, the clubs ambition should match that of the fans expectations, we deserve better (and they don’t have to break the bank to do it).

Cuddley, Would you as a Wolves fan have prefered the club to have made £9.1m profit or sign better players last season than the heap of cut price signings we ended up with.I am talking about the likes of Maierhofer Halford and Surman. Surely all Wolves fans want better football. We are bottom of the League.I know you like Moxey pies but surely you also go mainly for the football.

In hindsight some of the signings have been poor, but, then again spending the £9.1 million was no guarantee the players bought would have fared any better.
Don’t miss the point. My comments were directed at list of players names the E&S inserted in their report to wind up the story. For those who like to read what they want to read it appeared Jez Moxey was going to sell all the players in the event of relegation. Clearly NOT the case.
It’s all academic, anyway, we are not going down and I look forward to sharing the Steve Bull with North Bank fans “in transit”. May even buy one a Meat Pie.
Now where are those hod carriers ?

Cuddly, Hope you are right on staying up, we will know a bit more 5 pm tomorrow.
I do think you are being a bit unfair on the E and S,all they are naming are those players who we all think might go if we are relegated.According to the Fans Parliament minutes Jez was not forthcoming about the funding of phase 2,which I think is about£24million.Phase1 comes from capital but other than we need to make ongoing profits,no comment is made on how we are going to fund phase2.It is obvious isn’t it,we are going into debt.My point is Jez is just as capable of not telling us the facts,as the Eand S are capable of spinning a story. We are also told that phase 1 will look odd without the completion of phase 2,so it looks like phase 2 will get the go ahead. The question all Wolves fans should ask is,if we are stuggling to keep our Premier place despite being in profit, how on earth are we going to get on when we are saddled with debt;especially if we are stuck in the Championship.
