A ray of sunshine in ‘broken Britain’

Isn’t it nice to know that there is still kindness in ‘broken Britain’? writes Charlie Cashdan.

I had a fall yesterday in the street.  One of those stupid, embarrassing girlie falls involving ridiculously high-heels and an over-stuffed handbag.  I toppled over and landed in a big, crumpled heap.

Various strangers came to my aid.  One person picked up the contents of my bag which were scattered across the pavement, another helped me to stand.  Someone thrust some painkillers into my pocket and a lovely lady helped me to stagger to a bench.

She even offered to call work for me and get someone to come and help, but as I work alone that wasn’t really a workable plan.  She didn’t want to leave me and only agreed  once I explained that I had friends in a nearby store who I could hobble to.

In all, I think about five people stopped to help.  This is a pretty heart-warming statistic don’t you think?

Regular readers of my blog will know that I am usually cynical and grumpy about everything from benefit-scroungers to football fans, but I thought it was time to share something nice for a change.

Very reassuring to hear. All the talk of broken Britain has perhaps blinded us to the fact that the vast majority of people are honest, decent, kind citizens. The University of Leicester is having an online debate about broken Britain which is attracting a lot of discussion. I’m sure they would appreciate your insights if you have the time.
