Albion’s late, late show in the derby
Tuesday 22nd February 2011, 9:00AM GMT.
Sunday’s derby was high on drama but low on quality, and all the other relegation contenders will be more than happy the first ever Black Country derby ended in a draw.
The injury time equaliser courtesy of our loan star Carlos Vela may have sparked celebrations akin to the great escape, however the job of surviving this season’s relegation battle is far from over.
The game itself was a poor advert for one of the most heated local derbies in English football. During a dire first half neither team showed any quality until Wolves own loan star Jamie O’Hara scored a super goal.
Wolves had shown little interest in attacking our well-documented fragile defence, instead having plenty of possession in non-threatening areas.
The award of the free kick that led to the opening goal was a little dubious, although there was no disputing the quality of the finish. Having defended well we found ourselves 1-0 down at half time and knew our second half performance had to be better.
You could feel the tension in the air and maybe the intensity and importance of the game transcended down to the players as neither side found any rhythm. I must admit up until the goal it was the quietest Wolves away support I have ever witnessed and that tells you all you need to know about the first half.
The second half started at a completely different tempo and immediately we looked a better side going forward. However due to an error by Gabriel Tamas we gifted Wolves the opportunity to go 2-0 up and probably kill the game, Matt Jarvis completely miskicked his shot and the Hawthorns let out a collective phew.
What then ensued was a game of Albion attacking and Wolves defending. I watched as we had wave after wave of attacks that created chances that failed to be converted. I feel I must give Wolves some credit, they came to do a job and two minutes from time that plan had been executed perfectly.
Dogged determination and ultra defensive tactics made them extremely difficult to break down, it may not make for pleasant viewing but something tells me Mick McCarthy isn’t too concerned about football aesthetics.
The truth is when Carlos Vela pounced on Wayne Hennessey`s fumble it was no more than we deserved and had it come a little earlier I believe we would have gone to win the game.
There were some good performances from our players and a few who the game seemed to pass by. Jonas Olsson was immense again, solid at the back and more than willing to fight for every ball. He even looked a real handful when we threw him forward in the last five minutes, a tactic that surprisingly looked effective.
MA Fortune bore the brunt of our frustration as he missed a glorious opportunity, his indecision between shooting and controlling the headed pass from Peter Odemwingie meant he did neither as the ball bounced harmlessly away from him.
The frustrating thing was that he was the one player who was taking up excellent positions and regularly receiving the ball, yet his use of the ball was too often poor and ill judged.
Paul Scharner looked a little lost in a midfield four and Chris Brunt who received the man of the match award from presumably his agent was lacking his usual sharpness.
The game had a few talking points, strange substitutions, the lack of yellow cards, and the late late goal. But what I find most interesting is the contrasting tactics adopted by Wolves and Albion in their pursuit of avoiding relegation.
Wolves undoubtedly look more solid and less inclined to concede goals, but on the flip side they look less likely to score enough goals to win matches. The work rate they display in closing down the opposition is superb, but is this expenditure of energy costing them when it comes to the last ten minutes of games?
Albion on the other hand are the polar opposite, we will happily attack teams and score goals, but scoring them at one end and letting them in at the other amounts to too many draws when wins are possible. Wigan, West Ham and Wolves are all games we have drawn at home, scoring six and conceding just as many, it’s easy to see where our problems lie.
The strange conclusion I have come to is that if anything really positive can be taken from Sunday’s derby draw it is that if each team could take a little from their near neighbours then both sides could avoid relegation.
If Wolves could find a way of creating more chances for Kevin Doyle without losing their defensive strength and Albion could find a way of not conceding sloppy goals while still managing to hit the onion bag then both sides would easily stay up.
Finding that blend is what both teams have found to be their downfall this season, and I fear without finding it soon both clubs could be looking at the trap door to the Championship.
I may have pointed out the blindingly obvious, I just hope it is obvious to the people that matter and Mr Roy Hodgson and Mick McCarthy can turn things around.
This fixture deserves to be in the Premier League, I just hope it still is come the 2011/2012 season.

Scharner was the reason we got on top of them in the 2nd half.

I agree for the most part. Concerning Albion scoring more but conceding more and Wolves doing the opposite, well that sums up every promoted team most seasons. You either score and concede or do neither, if it was easy to find an happy medium then alot of promoted teams would stay up easily.
The difference for me sunday was the lack of build up from the back, we seemed too quick to pump the ball forward, resulting, in the first half anyway, in it coming straight back. I hope this isnt the shape of things to come under Woy. Our problem has never been when we have the ball it’s when we haven’t.

Hi Jarrod great blog mate, out the two teams on show sunday weev got to be favs to stop up,in all honesty and im sure the dingle fans will agree they are awful,no way are they going to win the 5 games (at least)to stay up,ive no doubt that when we go to the custard bowl we will be singing cheerio cheerio and personaly i cant wait, the prem dont need that type of football, aye boing boing

Oh and i also made the same point to a Wolves supporting mate who moaned about the timing of the equaliser, to be thankful it came as late as it did else the momentum may have allowed us to nick another one.

Two poor sides, we let too many in and Wolves don’t score many. I think if we’d scored a late equaliser against anyone else, you wouldn’t have seen such big celebrations. Hopefully Roy will improve things at the back but It still doesn’t look good. Wolves do have a better run-in but given their past record against the teams around them and their lack of goals, I wouldn’t be predicting wins etc. My uncle’s a Dingle, going for 30 years and he’s dreading their run-in. We need to tighten up at the back but on the other hand I don’t wnt to see Hoof-ball at the Hawthorns. Really hope we both stay up but can’t see it.

I would have to disagree, other than Fortunes miss we barely created a chance and Wolves, but for someone able to play a killer ball, looked threatening on the break.
I am obviously delighted to get the point, but to say it was deserved is completely wrong and I really fear for our survival

I have to disagree with you about Scharner. I thought he was very good. He was never going to give us the tenacity of Mulumbu but he provided good cover and won numerous headers and tackles.
The defensive midfielder position is a sometimes hard to gauge when considering performances but its not all about how many KM’s are put in. Sometimes its about a shield.
In terms of the game itself, we all know it was poor and there was only one moment of PL quality really. I though the Albion shape was good with the inverted wingers and expect we will set up like that in most games, trying to contain teams and not pressing so high up the pitch. It should tighten us up and if Vela gets a run, he could be the new Kieran Richardson or Richard Sneekes
However, ultimately 3 points from Wigan, West Ham and Wolves could really cost us.
I agree that Scharners positional sense was good at times, however due to his lack of mobility i thought he struggled in a midfield four. But as i mentioned i think this was more down to the fact he was in a midfield four rather than the five we are used to.
My frustration was our inability for long periods to get to grip with Jamie O Hara. He looked far and away their most creative player and if he was to suffer an injury i would fear even more for Wolves future.

I come in peace………
Both sides showed a lack of killer instinct. Jarvis missed a howler but second half Albion got into some great situations to either give the ball away or indeed take the wrong option in the final 3rd.
Both teams are struggling, Wolves apart from that glaring miss, had nothing up front to test what has been a weak defence in the West Brom team.
However the silver lining is Blackpool look doomed to me at the moment. Complete free fall.
Blackpool, Wigan and West Ham for the drop??? Fingers crossed hey?!

no.7 , nice try fellow wolf but unfortunately we both know they deserved at least a point, Jarvis cleared off the line, Elokobi blocked odemwinkles goal bound shot, Henn made a number of saves and they had 11 shots on target to our one.
For me the plus point was our defending but sadly are goal scoring and creating is very poor. Lets hope we both pull off a miracle.

My feelings precisely Jarrod. I’m trying totype this onone of those notebook PCs while sitting idling in bed. Grrrr! It will be interesting to see how our new defensive approach functions against Stoke because they won’t park a bus like Wolves. I must admit that I wouldn’t fancy facing the two toughest tackling teams in two weeks. I can still see St Peter flying skywards from a perfectly fair challenge by Elly Kickbums. The sheer strength of it was of nightmare making. I can’t stand this thing. I’m getting up !

You do not think we deserved a draw out of the game?? Really?? I know stats do not tell the whole story but i would suggest you take a look at them.
It was a game of few chances, however Wolves created one good one (Jarvis miss) and we had Fortunes, Vela`s goal, Velas deflected shot, Olsson header, Tamas header, and Odemwingies header.
Not quite sure the reasoning behind thinking we didnt deserve the equaliser, but i do agree that i too fear for our survival.

I have heard Wolves fans bemoaning Mick McCarthy`s substitutions for the last couple of days. I must admit when SEB came on my missus thought it was Cee-lo Green coming on, barrel chested doesnt quite descride his physique does it??

no.10 I am infact a season ticket holder in the smethwick end, so i have to correct you there.
I admit we had more shots on target than Wolves, but other than Fortunes chance where I have no clue what he was trying to do, we did not have a clear chance where you think we should have scored. The goal came from poor defending and a goalkeeping mistake and up until then I could not see us scoring.
Based on our awful first half performance, and struggling to create any clear chances against a team as poor as Wolves, whether its a derby or not is why I believe if the game had just fizzed out and ended 0-1, I dont think we could have had any complaints
Report abuse
I didn’t see the game, I read the live commentary from both Sky and the BBC and listened to the comments from Sky’s commentator. The point I want to make probably has already been covered on other threads. A lot of the Wolves fans are still saying we were lucky, will go down, they were the better team, etc. But according to the BBC stats we had more shots on and off target and more corners. It from these that goals are scored and the more shots at target the more chances you have of scoring. You can have ninety percent of the possession, but if all you do is pass it around the field then all you are doing is denying the opposition chances of scoring, but its dangerous as it only takes a few seconds to score.
Yes, it probably was a scrappy game. Yes, they could have made it two, but we could have made it a lot more. Who stays up and who goes down won’t be decided for a few weeks yet. It may be either, both or none of us. But at least can posters please try and be realistic in their claims.
Can’t agree with the scharner comment, he often wins balls from oppositions goal kicks etc. He may not be Mulumbu but still does a good job of breaking down attacks, also look at our results from earlier on in the season when he was in midfield. Just a thought but maybe playing him & Mulumbu in the middle may work espcially away, still have 2 wingers plus St. Pete dropping off the other forward, I reckon this would make us less fragile.

I’m sure the enormity of the game played it’s part in making all the players nervous thus affecting their ability to play flowing football plus Roy’s influence,Malumbu’s absence etc but the crowd again neglected to do their job.
1. 0-1 nervous quiet.
2. Moaning Morons wasting energy abusing players instead of supporting.Their treatment of Fortune was diabolical,as you said he did a lot good work but every wrong move he made recieved abuse, he’s becoming the new Carson, very helpful lads.
I’ll just tell you another example of what we are up against.A short fused moaner who sits close to me jumped to his feet and screamed abuse at Roy telling him he didn’t know what he was doing, with a few choice words thrown in, when he took Dorrans off, a blind man could see he was limping!
3.No singing from the Brummie when we win a corner at that end at one time we had 3 in succession,no singing, WHY?
4.Another example of strange minds, on a previous post somebody said it was very strange to see Ollson playing up front and did anyone notice. It’s called a tactical switch mate! How he didn’t get MOTM is a mystery.
On the plus side and I know it’s not down to me but I have been banging on about it, I enjoyed the rousing rendition of The Lords just before kick off, come on lads make it compulsory.
I did turn into MR SMUG after we scored with a smile from ear to ear after continually telling the moaners TRANQILLO! be patient.
Pity that’s my last game for a while I’m off to get warm but just because I’m not there
I’ll be there in spirit so don’t forget lads we need all the help we can get and all we can do is give total vocal support, hold on to your frustrations and TRANQILLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Kev,
dead right on your third (no singing) point. I inquired of those around me. who was being interred. The only players I got onto were Doyle, he was stuck in their defence most of the first half and for every corner in same. Must have got cheesed off with me as I didn’t see him after the break. Hennessey was the other, for kicking up our turf at goal-kicks. No wonder the Custard-Bowl is in such a state.
Olsson hadn’t anyone to mark so why shouldn’t he cause mayhem in their box. I enjoyed our celebration at the end, especially when I whipped out my whisky flask.

Good blogg Jarrod and its good to see a balanced view rather than the laughed at wolf propoganda thats been plastered on here since sunday….. i really wonder what game some people watched.
I thought they JUST shaded the first half and maybe deserved to go in one up – but we BATTERED them for most of the second and on a different day could have been 3-1.
I know what you mean about Sharner but him and ollson stood up to Micks maulers and we gave better than we got for once – same against Stoke will be needed.
Its a tough run in – but the three teams at the bottom don’t have our quality and if we can play our best football and P.O and Vela can forge a partnership we will be ok.
The game wasn’t a classic,by any stretch of the imagination, but then again,I didn’t expect it to be.
If you look at the first half,Albion were obviously still feeling nervous after the West Ham collapse last week, and although Mick would have told his players to take advantage of that fact,by attacking Albion from the start, they had little threat up front.
So we had two teams, both under pressure, running up and down the pitch, often booting the ball away from danger.
In the second half,Albion settled down more, and knowing they were already behind, had nothing to lose by attacking wolves.
The funny thing is,split second incidents can change people’s perception of the game.
If a couple of Albion’s efforts had gone in (say Olssen’s header off the line, and fortune’s close range miss),and Jarvis had scored for wolves,Albion would have won 3-2,and many people would have said it was a great result for the Baggies, and a good, high scoring game.
But that’s football.

An excellent blog and a fair reflection on a game watched on the Internet!
Although completely deflated by the late equaliser I actually feel better now you have made the point about scoring a couple of minutes earlier and having the time to go on and win it! Hadn’t thought about that!
Would we both had taken a draw in the nervous few days leading up to kick off? I think so! Here’s hoping we can both do the great escape this year and watch us both with a bit more quality next year!

The problem is that most wolves ‘visitors’ on here just want to put Albion down, and throw insults at us,so I feel compelled to chuck their comments back in their faces, which they obviously don’t like.

Jarrod I think this is one of your best blogs, so many interesting points. As I’ve said before it’s not just reading the blog but the fact that we don’t have to agree with all of it and it provokes some of the best posts we get on here.
For once it seems that my glass was half empty to your half full one. I thought it was a truly awful disjointed display that lacked professionalism, spirit and confidence. I’m sure the last had a great affect on the first two.
Perhaps as well I didn’t take enough account of the awful stifling effect Wolves tactics have on a game. I don’t know which I dislike more, their snuff out flair (sounds like a pun but none intended) at all costs or the Stoke biff bang wallop style. What is it about Staffordshire teams?
Excellent posts from crezwell, 1879 and Kio about Scharner although I don’t think you were criticising his performance as much as the set-up. I think Kio is right about playing Scharner and Mulumbu together as it worked so well when we had our good run. It gives the other players, especially defenders freedom to get forward.
One last word for Rich5wolves. Yes it would be great for Midlands football so fingers crossed, especially that the Cockney big heads go down.

Morning mate, a fair reflection of the game, although i have to admit that up until the equaliser, you had been pretty vocal, to the extent that laura and myself went on ebay for some earplugs. I feel that the new shape was pretty evident from very early on, and on several occasions you could look across the pitch and see much more shape to our team. Obviously its going to put more pressure on the front two, and going to limit our chances, but it also makes us a lot less likely to score as many. What is key is that our conversion ratio improves, so that the 2-3 chances we will get bear a goal or two. I think roy has targetted a lot of draws to get us where we want to be, and for the last few games ill settle for so that it gives him the chance to build a squad that better suits his needs.

Hiya Pete,

What I find bewildering is the Wolves fans belief that they dominated the game. I listened to Radio Wolves on the way home with Paul Franks saying that Wolves had dominated. This domination was based on defence to midfield and back passing between Berra, O’Hara (who to be fair played well and scored a great goal) & Henry. Stats show that shots on target 12-2, shots off target 8-4, corners 12-1 (BBC site) do not quite back this up. I for one thought a draw was probably as good as we deserved. I found Wolves decision to sit back in the 2nd half against our defence, the weakest in the league quite surprising. We had enough chances to have won the game but I do not feel played well enough to justify 3 points. There were some poor performances but the booing of players is getting to be a popular theme and must stop. This is not the way to support a team – if you want to boo during the game, you are better staying away. Mr Brunt’s mom & dad were obviously the march sponsors because I was astonished that he was voted MOM. However, we all have our opinions but the one thing we have in common is support of the team. For the rest of the season, that must continue.

Happy to see same result over next 11 games. At least we looked more solid & as Jarrod said if we can defend & still score we have a chance. Missed Mulumbu in midfield, he makes Scharner a better player and gives us that little bit of zest. Interesting how Thomas did not fancy it against a strong full back & 2nd covering player, thought Brunt moving to left brought him into game & made us look better threat. As you said Fortune was in the right position but then everything else was wrong. Shorey gives us strength and composure & Vela must be a starter from now on, otherwise Wenger might be asking a few questions! He took his goal well. Can we get something from Stoke, one point would be good, 3 even better but I suppose I can dream.

I must have been watching a different game to Ant Lowe . We had several chances and well deserved our equalizer. It may be that we are being too pessimistic about the future and our run in. There are no easy games at this level and if I was a Wolves fan I would not be over confident of beating Blackpool who have the ability to score goals against anyone. Any team in the bottom half of the table will be fighting for their lives at this stage and we may yet see teams which currently look safe being drawn into the dogfight. It’s too early to be doomed or safe.

The story about 400 Wulfies arriving at half time interested me somewhat. Their end was pretty well jam-packed at K.O. so those 400 must have had tickets for our seats which were not full at K.O. Certainly those two ‘sweeties’ I mentioned earlier were Wulfies and that was why they got thrown out, as well as drinking beer whilst in their seats.

Awful game and really poor atmosphere throughout the whole stadium. I just think this was down to the tension and how important this game was. Both teams were so scared of losing that the fear factor spread to the fans – I know how sick I felt before and during. We were the better team no doubt but I don’t think we did enough to deserve to win it. Would have been criminal had Wolves stolen a win.
Great strike by O’Hara but once again we switched off to a short freekick – time and time again we are shooting ourselves in the foot. Did we look slightly more comfortable at the back? I think so – but mainly because Wolves offered so little going forward. Absolutely no ambition from the Wolves – why they didn’t push the ball constantly to Jarvis, who had the beating of Jara every time – I’ll never know.
Agree re: Fortune – bar his desire to set a new world record for the most number of offsides in one game I actually thought he was far more of a threat and a nuisance to the Wolves defence than any other player – as Bomber stated though his end product and decision making was nothing short of woeful. Far too many Albion players had off days – Odenwinge, Thomas, Brunt, Tamas, Jara, Shorey……
Off the back of this game and result – yes a last minute equaliser was deserved and felt like a mini win but at the end of it all I can only see both of us being relegated if performances don’t improve quickly.
As for the mindless idiots (minority) in both home and away ends throwing smoke bombs/ coins – you’re an absolute disgrace and neither club, football in general or in fact our country wants/ needs you. You are absolute scum.

Good Derby, poor football match.
Too many of our players had an off day (Brunt, Ode, MAF…) for it to be a good team performance, add to that, Mulumbo missing, Roys 1st game, the fact it was a Derby game and a relegation 6 pointer to boot, so hard to make an early judgement on Roys “new” Albion. However, i did see a couple of encouraging signs for the remaining games.
First off, we had a solid 2 banks of 4 everytime we were not in possession, the full backs kept their shape in the system (even if Jarvis had the beating of Jara) and at least one of the front two tracked back – much better. I do think this new disipline took a bit off our forward play, but you have to understand players need time to adjust to a new set-up and all the things the new boss is asking of them. I was also impressed with sending Olsson up front. He had an immediate impact in winning two knock downs that lead to real uncertainty in the Wulfs defence, which had being doing quite well upto that stage. It showed the difference between an experienced manager like Roy, and an up and coming one like RDM (not knocking RDM) that he was thinking a little outside the box and gave MM a real problem, he was forced into doing something to counter it – hence Craddock coming on.
Amazed me how quite a few Wulfies criticized MM for this substitution, but i don’t see what choice he had, so well done to Roy on that one. With Mulumbo (hopefully) back for Stoke match and another 8 days for RH on the training ground, there is at least just a little promise at last.

by beating top teams at home we must do the same. Stoke aerial threat next we must get the ball into their box with Peter and Carlos
