There is a chance for Saddlers . . .

Not so long ago I doubted our ability to reach 30 points by the end of the season, so to say I’m impressed with getting there with 15 games to go would be putting it mildly, writes Walsall blogger Mark Jones.
Equally I would have been cynical about the announcement of next season’s ticket prices. Not because I don’t welcome the initiatives or the greater amount of consultation that went into them; I do, and I’m happy there are people at the club really listening to us.
But simply because less than two months ago I’d have wondered if anyone would have wanted to take the club up on them, given the desperate footballing fare that was on offer at the time.
I’ve vowed to make no reference at all to a well known WW2 film until at least the end of April – wish me good luck on that one – but Dean Smith has given us a fighting chance of stopping up. And as a result of this, I get the feeling that there is a chance that the ticket office will be a little busier throughout the Early Bird period next month.
The 2011/12 Season Ticket prices rightly gained the club a lot of positive publicity in the attempts to target younger fans and win over potential supporters from the forces of darkness. However they do reward existing fans with a price freeze as well – and if there’s anyone who needs rewarding, it’s those of us who’ve had to endure the Hutchings era.
There is also the possibility that some of the 2000 fans who have been driven away in recent years may be tempted to return. This is a bigger ask, but a more open and receptive board and a Walsall side who actually look like something resembling a football team are two of the things we’ve been asking for, so you never know.
Of course we’re all aware that there is still a bigger issue, still unresolved, that everyone has to try and bypass for now at least. But there is something about an 81st. minute winner in a six pointer against stubborn but limited opposition on a night against when you think it’s never going to happen that makes you forget about all the other rubbish.
Now for 40 points . . . as quickly as possible.
