Albion’s transfer rumours reviewed
Friday 28th January 2011, 6:00AM GMT.
As its FA Cup weekend and we do not have a game until Tuesday I have decided to take a quick look at some of the transfer rumours doing the rounds, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
I think we have all accepted that the squad needs a little tweaking and, as the end of this transfer window approaches like a runaway train, we have been linked with a number of players.
Todays blog will allow all Baggies fans to air their own views regarding a number of players who have been rumoured to be on Roberto Di Matteo`s radar.
Of course by the time you are reading this one of these rumours may have signed!
So let’s have a look at who has been mentioned:
Ewerthon, a 29 year old Brazilian striker who is available on a free transfer since negotiating his release from Palmeiras. He has played for Borussia Dortmund and Real Zaragoza and has a remarkable goal scoring record having played 249 games for European sides and scored 97 goals. He is a free agent at the moment so clubs can still sign him outside of the current transfer window, however with a number of clubs queuing up for his services, a deal sooner rather than later is on he cards.
Jeffrey Bruma, a Dutch central defender who currently plays for Chelsea. At 21 years of age Chelsea are looking to send him out on loan until the end of the season and with Roberto`s connection to Chelsea the rumour is that if Chelsea sign a centre half in the next few days Bruma is on his way to us.
Matt Mills, 24 year old centre back who currently plays for Reading. Highly rated at Reading and would command a sizeable transfer fee if a deal was to be done. He has been linked to us before and continues to build his reputation as one of the leading lights playing in the Championship.
Carlos Vela, 21 year old Mexican striker who currently plays for Arsenal. Arsene Wenger has publicly stated his desire for Carlos to go out on loan to another Premier league team until the end of the season and ourselves and Bolton have been strongly linked. A skilful striker who is highly rated at Arsenal, however he has struggled to make any impact on the first team.
Michael Owen, unless you are only five years old or you have just landed on earth, this guy needs no introducing. Now aged 31 and on the back of more injuries than my childhood toy buckaroo, Michael is rumoured to be ready to go out on loan. He has struggled to get close to the starting eleven at Old Trafford due to continued injuries, however his experience and phenomenal goal scoring record could tempt a number of managers to take a gamble on paying his wages until the end of the season.
El Hadji Diouf, 30 year old Senegalese forward who currently plays for Blackburn. Having fallen out with new manager Steve Kean it is rumoured he is looking for a new club. He has played as both a winger and striker throughout his career with Premier League clubs Liverpool, Bolton, Sunderland, and Blackburn.
I am not saying that any of these rumours are true I have merely collated information found doing the rounds. I believe we are looking closely at strikers and maybe some cover for defence and that the club much prefer any deals completed to be either loans or free transfers.
Out of the list above there are a few I wouldn’t mind seeing at the Hawthorns, a couple I think who are unlikely, and one that sends a shudder down my spine at the thought of him pulling on our beloved blue and white striped jersey.
Ewerthon as a free transfer sounds like a relatively risk free deal. His experience and goal scoring record is superb and if we could sign a player of his calibre it would certainly excite the fans. I imagine that he will have many suitors for his services having been a regular scorer throughout Europe and representing Brazil, but if we do not try we will never know, fingers crossed.
Some rumours have the “my god has someone just plucked that out of thin air” feel about them and others sound extremely plausible. The Jeffrey Bruma rumour sits firmly in the very plausible category. Although we are believed to be shopping in the striker department the memory of Fulham away will still haunt our Head Coach enough to add some defensive cover if available.
Matt Mills is a player I rate personally, however I cannot see us completing this type of deal during a January transfer window, one to be kept on the back burner for the summer me thinks.
Carlos Vela will go out on loan, but to whom?? A good prospect he most definitely is, what we need at the moment? I am not so sure, will he have the heart and stomach for a relegation fight? Answer is we do not know and maybe my thoughts are clouded by our experience of one Mr Jay Simpson.
Another player who will make many a baggie fan scratch their head is Michael Owen. Fit and firing on all cylinders you would be a fool not to want him in your side, but the problem is how many games would you get out of him between now and the end of the season? Not that I think either Roberto or Alex could convince him to come to us, he would represent a huge gamble.
This brings me to my last and probably most controversial rumour, El Hadji Diouf. I pray to god this is just a rumour thought up by someone in cyber space as I do not want this guy anywhere near my beloved club. I am desperate for the Albion to stay up, but I would even forsake survival if it meant we had to sign Diouf. I don’t think I can make myself clearer than that.
So there is my opinion on the rumours, but what are yours or do you know of any others?

the brilliant way Mulumbu sends the ball up to Odinwingie, and Peter lays it down to his feet only to be closed down most of the time by two defenders, imagine he had someone partnering him up front to lay the ball down for,a fit Owen would do well there , but for some reason Lee Hughes keeps springing to mind…..
i know it’s a stab in the dark but charlie austin at swindon would be a gamble which i think would be worth taking. he holds the ball up, brings others into play and has a very good goalscoring record. looks like he’s on his way to ipswich though!! ewerthon on the other hand would be a real buy, great goalscoring record for 2 top european teams plus he’s won the bundesliga!!!
Garland, I think Charlie Austin would end up being another Simon Cox – a great talent but won’t be given the chance to shine. Could be a good investment if we did go down as he would be handy in the Championship or if we stayed up he could be loaned out. But at the moment I’m hankering for an experienced old fashioned target man who’s done the rounds and knows where the net is. Has Alan Shearer got a long lost younger brother anywhere?

Are you the Swindon Chairman? ;)

Jarrod, thanks for this. It’s helped to make sense of the rumours and to put realism into perspective.
We should have signed Yakubu. Leicester have done well to get him as I think he is Prem quality. But that’s in the past.
Ewerthon doesn’t strike me as a gamble worth taking. Ok he’s free but being from the other side of the Atlantic, and down a bit, he’s going to want to be well paid. I’m not sure he will fancy the scrap to be honest.
Vela won’t be a Baggie, he’s the kind of player that will end up elsewhere by the power of gazump! Someone, somewhere will provide a better deal than we can afford.
The other rumour this morning was Gera coming back. I would love to see him put the striped shirt back on but romance aside, I’m not sure what he would add to the squad!
So, let’s be patient. I think we’ll have a new face or two come 1st Feb but I just hope they don’t dissapoint!
Jarrod….I cant help feeling (hope) that signings are imninent and my desire would be for either all (not on) or a combination of Ewerton, Bruma Mills and Vella on loans or permanent. We deparartely need a shake up and I think young players with pace are needed particuarly at the back were we are not so quick. We all know we have to stop the flood of goals against us and score more up front but to do this will need a change in style, one (Odewinge) up front on his own and no one backing him up is not working. If you watch the top teams the whole team move foreward in a “wave” when they get the ball (up to five in the box) and all drop back when they defend, we seem fragmented.
I wrote the article yesterday and already you can add Sotirios Krygiakos, Zoltan Gera, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to the list.
I am expecting Monday to be mayhem!!!
Difficult one this is. For the first third of this season the existing squad would have made it difficult to mention anyone but the likes of serious quality signings. Westill have the existing squad and now all fully fit. fromthe chairmans viewpoint he must surely be asking if they were good enough then what has changed, and its a good question that i cant answer. This transfer window is meant to be a tweaking feature, and thats probably what we need, but if we go down the path of signing a striking option, and play a 442 or 4411 formation who do we drop, we have frailty that has reared its headagain at the back and although sharner hada badgame at blackburn he does add some steel to the defence, Mulumbu has to be the first name on the team sheet and we need creativity from the middle as well as width ? I dont have the answer to this one, but will wait and see what the people who do have the answers come up with. For me its not doom and gloom and probably the only reason we are being like this is becauseof our great start. Take the positives, we are not and havent been for the most part in the drop zone, Blackpool have difficult timesahaed and are not out of it, and we have the games in front of us to scrape the 40 points.
play odenwingie behind stiker or even on the wing. Morrison has been ineffective (bar the effort and commitment) in the middle and i can;t believe Di Matteo keeps playing him there when his best postion is blatantly on the wing.
Dead right
Report abuse
Ewerthon & Bruma would seem to be good propositions. Mills would probably cost too much. Owen’s wages would be too much though I think he would suit our style of play. I’ve encountered Diouf on a number of (non-football) occasions and he is obnoxious in the extreme (Don’t you know who I am!). Wouldn’t want him in our team.
JARROD
I was hoping you would show some common sense on the Diouf hysteria ,sadly you have not , would you really want the Albion to get relegated if they sign one player who does not fit in with people’s moral compass ?? i can only presume that people who dislike Diouf are whiter than white and saintly in their own lives .
He didn’t say he wanted us to get relegated if we signed him, just that given the choice of staying up with him or going down without him he’d choose the latter.
In regards to the Diouf rumour, I wouldn’t mind as much if he were a good player but after losing his fire over the past few years I have nothing more to say bar he is a vile human being. Nothing more, nothing less.
Even to the childish degree that when I play FIFA 11 on my X-Box and I come up against him, I try to clatter him each time :-D
…him and Joey Barton.

Wall Heath Baggie
I do not like El Hadji Diouf, when he spat at fans (more than once) he showed utter contempt for the very people who pay his wages, us the fans.
To do it once was bad enough but when he repeated the trick it made my blood boil. We have never met each other my fellow baggie but lets just put it like this, if i had been the fan who he spat at he wouldnt be playing football again!!!
I will say it again, i do not want him anywhere near our club.
I completely agree with you bomber. He is a disgusting human being.
We may not all be whiter than white but to repeatedly spit at the fans who, as you say, pay his wages is utterly disgraceful.
We think that Carson had some stick. It’d be 10 times worse for this creature.

Message received and understood , but i notice you did not really answer my question.
I have followed the Albion since 1969 and i have attended many games home and away , not once have i attended and wanted them to lose , if ever i do then that will be the end of my association with the club , for a club to be relegated they will have to lose games , i would appreciate your thoughts.

If given the chance of signing Diouf and staying up or not signing him and going down i would choose the latter.
A bit like how i wouldbt sell my soul to the devil for the Aston Martin id quite like.
Beleive me i am no angel, but i would like to think i treat people as they deserve to be treated.

Apparently the Ewerthon deal is very much on the back burner due to his lack of fitness and RDM wants players who can come in and be ready straight away.
The Krygiakos rumour from Liverpool is an interesting one. A no nonsense cb might just cure some of our defensive frailities. Like most deals i think everything is dependent on what other clubs do themselves, domino effect.
There are some interesting points above, the only worry for me is that realistically, are many of these better than what we’ve got?
Hilltop makes some good points. We’re in for a striker, I can’t see any of them displacing Odemwingie, in which case barring an unlikely change of formation all we’re after is a plan B, an alternative. So I think it’s dangerous to start pinning all our hopes on these next 2 days.
TRBH made a point the other day although I think he was quoting someone else at the time. The best signings we could have are a bit of luck and confidence.
These players are good enough, make no mistake, would you swap them for Wolves or West Ham’s squad? None of the teams around us have all the others to play at home. Wigan, West Ham and Wolves represents a chance to push through the 30-point barrier from where the finishing line is in sight.
Somehow, somewhere, we have to get the players believing again and tightening up a tad. Whether that’s through a name coming in or not, RDM certainly has to earn his stripes these next few weeks.
Jarrod,
I would take Bruma and Owen. Bruma wiould add a bit of pace to our somewhat pedestrian back line and owen if fit would score goals. I reacll when we signed Super Kev he was thought to be injury prone and over the hill and how wrong that proved to be. On the Diouf issue, I personally don’t care who they are as long as they can play. look a Lee Bowyer at Blues again not universally popular but he can play. Cantona I recall jumped into the crowd but he could play a bit too!! Gera not for me and Ewerthon has a good record but has not played for a while and may not be fit.

Alex Baggie
In the summer when we were chasing a striker, I like you glanced enviously in the direction of Yakubu. However I work with an Everton fan who tells me his laziness has gone to new levels this season, that he’s been utilised as a lone striker there and his lack of desire has had a detrimental effect on their whole team this season. Would he have the stomach for the fight?
Also he’s a Nigerian 28, Kanu’s a Nigerian 34. That means he was born before Cyril (no offence intended Cyril!).

You don’t think that’s a big name? Choupo-Moting is impressive enough, but two first names puts it over the top as far as I’m concerned.

Totally agree Jarrod, I don’t want that sewer rat Diouf anywhere near my club and yes if given the choice of having him and staying up or avoiding him and going down I too would choose the latter. Just the thought of him pulling on our shirt has got me angry. Just look at the bile he’s spat out against Carragher lately and the infamous incident against QPR…if I recall he was being very antagonising at our place earlier in the season as well.

Warren
The possible signings above may not be better than what our first eleven are, but if they are better than our current back up or players on the bench then it imporves us.
We have on more than one occassion discussed the line between success and failure in the PL is a fine one, improving our squad could even by just one player could make the difference.
The point you make re some good fortune is a good one. I hate it when i hear pundits and fans talk about decisions and good fortune evening themselves out over the course of a season, utter tosh. However if it does i cannot wait, and i hope we get all these dodgy penalties and such when we play Wigan, West Ham and Wolves.
But i am not banking on it.
You’re definitely right about improving the squad. The thing that worries me is that there does seem to be an air of ‘If we don’t sign anyone we’re screwed’ amongst the supporters. Yet the chances of us signing a striker better than Odemwingie are remote. So like you say, it might be a case of improving our options off the bench or in the squad.
Whether we get anyone or not, I still think the difference between us staying up or not will probably come down to whether we can get our existing players playing again rather than whether we sign a saviour as there won’t be many out there. I just hope if we don’t get anyone, there’s not an mood of discontent or resignation for the games coming up, which are huge.
Max.
I know we disagree on most things football BUT… I’ve never disagreed more with you on anything than this. In effect what you are saying is that if it meant winning a game there is no one you would rule out wearing our shirt… Ian Huntley? Pol Pot? Adolf Hitler? Peter Suttcliffe? Richard Keys? I know these are extreme cases but the point is the same, where do you draw the line.
There was a lot of fuss on here (mostly from Laughing Wolf) when Jonas Olsson gestured to our crowd. I ask you, how would you feel if it was you this specimen was spitting at?
PS.
You never replied to my post the other day on how you felt about him screaming abuse at the QPR lad being stretchered off with a badly broken leg.
Where does Polpot play and what is his goal per game ratio LOL.
As for Diouf and QPR he was accused of this by Warnock , that paragon of virtue.
I personally do not care if we sign the guy or not, what i fail to understand is how so called Supporters can hope their Club gets relegated because we sign one player who is not to their taste.
As i said yesterday, if he got the winner against the Wolves i wonder how many would then be banging on about his past.
It is all rather hypothetical anyway because as far as i know he a’int signed.
This Key’s guy is available on a free after having his contract ended, i am sure Jez will be interested if he is cheap.

This has been pointed out to you several times now – what people are saying is they would rather not sign him and go down than sign him and stay up then be stuck with him! God learn to read man!

i know i’ve already commented but Krygiakos is possibly the worst defender i have seen in the premier league and i would be very dissapointing to see us sign him. despite the fact he plays for liverpool he hasn’t had a glittering career and makes worse msitakes than richard stearman.

I have my own view on Albion’s Transfer policy(if the E&S don’t edit it)Peace doesn’t do business in January. In the summer we loan out players (Davis, Greening,Robinson,VALERO)12 months later they sell them for a fortune hoping we’ve forgot about em. A bit of that money is used to sign 1-2 million pound players Ibanez,Mattock,Meite, who clearly aren’t good enough and hardly ever get near the first team(thinking this will pacify us fans). How much was Luke Moore sold for???
We aint gonna sign anyone, We aint got the ambition,We aint got the desire to stay in this league.
Loyalty is being tested Big time

Are you the same lozza that posts on here in lower case?
I only ask because in memory he normally makes sensible points in his posts.
This has all the hallmarks of Laughing Wolf using lozza’s monicker but getting it slightly wrong.
I can’t be bothered picking your points to pieces as they are too ridiculous.
The reason we’ve bought no one in yet is that we don’t have the financial clout to go and wave the cheque book under other clubs noses. Therefore the players available are other club’s cast-offs. Do you really want us hoovering those up? If we sign anyone it will be at the last minute at the end of a 4 week poker game.
I know it proves nothing but this was posted at 10.23 and LW was on their site at 10.28.

The 12 months delay in transfers is so they are included in the following tax year. I think he’s more concerned about how our accounts read than whether you can remember Valero or not!!

You were saying?
To make sense of this we need to think about what the weaknesses are. I think we lack pace at both of the full back positions. This can pull the centre backs out of position and makes them look vulnerable.
…and if we get a new striker does that imply a new formation? Otherwise are we saying that PO needs to make way? Or will the new striker be asked to sit on the bench in case PO is injured?
Please ‘not’ El Hadji Diouf we can well do without this soldier of fortune. Let him take his brand of football to place where they have no problem with spitting!
As for the transfers we obviously need happy to leave it to the team that has brought us Dorrans,Mulumbu and Peter the Great!
14 Warren.
I can’t take credit for that, I think it was CR78 (I couldn’t find it again when I looked.) I think the thing is that it’s not just luck with referees but luck with injuries. All of the problems that people are picking up on are from not having a settled team. Our injuries have been to key players, if we can keep them fit we’ll be fine.
PS.
Bomber makes a good point. It’s not just about bringing someone in to improve the first XI but also the bench. The striker/goalscorer is the big one, not just to give PO a rest or to offer a plan B but like every player he’s only one kick from an injury. Great shame MAF has never looked the same player as when he was here before.
Still if we don’t get anyone, I think we’ve still got decent options in Bednar, Cox and even Fortune if he can remember what he was doing right last time.
I agree that Bednar and Cox have a role to play, but they need to get on the pitch. Leaving them on the bench for game after game or just giving them a few minutes at the end will make it very difficult for them to get the match sharpness that they need. One of the few criticisms of RDM that I have is that he doesn’t always seem to make the right changes early enough when we are chasing a game.
Here’s a slightly controversial idea. Playing Fortune up front, with Cox just behind him. I know, its madness to “drop” PO for MAF, but i don’t think PO and Cox would necessarily work well together, (although i would be delighted to be proved wrong!) but i think given MAF’s strength and ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play, he would compliment and get the best out of Cox. I think the need to try something different and be a much less predictable team is paramount now, so brave (and sometimes unpopular)decisions need to be taken. PO could still be used from the bench, what a player to bring on with 25 mins remaining!
Warren. No offence mate about age. I’ve reached the age where I am proud to have got this far.
Lozza, I agreed with one of your posts the other day. I don’t agree with your No.23 post at all.
I asked yesterday where we stood on Diouf. I think we would need a shrink for each present squad member if that misguided mishap joined us. I would like us to become a regular Prem team, although I don’t like some of the dubious motives for its existence. However, if we are yet again a yo-yo team this season, my season ticket will be bought just as if nothing had happened, because nothing will have happened to MY SUPPORT.

Hello to all. Firstly, with no game until Tuesday, how nice it is to have a stress free Friday!
Jarrod, a good topic with some good interesting posts. My feelings are Ewerton would be a gampbe until he settles and gets match fit and in the position that we are I am not convinced it would be the best move. Bruma? who knows – appears good but how would he see this move? Chance to prove or just a chance to play for a team that he ins’t going to be paying for next season? Ditto Vela. I like Mills but can’t see us stumping up big money for him but I do think that he would fit th bill. Owen? With the run of injuries that we have had – he would fit in well!!! Unlikely to play enough and don’t think that he would fancy it. Diouf – I cannot believe this is true. I actually think taking him on could work against us – opposing supporters would actually like us to get relegated and possibly he has too many enemies with opposing players and managers. Definitely no!
I have thought about Gera & KP several times this season but those days are gone. In truth, we do not know who we will be signing, we will know what we have by Tuesday morning and whoever that is will get my full support. I think it was Warren who pointed out that a bit of luck with suspensions and injuries could be our best signings and that is probably not far off the mark. In our position, we do need a couple of fresh faces to freshen things up and probably do need a centre half and above or else another striker and a change in fortune which is long overdue, but with some confidence, I believe that we have the squad to get enough points to stay in this league. Our next 3 homes games will probably determine this.
Greetings all!
I’ll take anyone bubbly right now as I think we need a bit of a positive buzz in the changing room. Someone with a bit of character, it’s a shame we didn’t look at Bullard, we could of then pushed Dorran’s further up and less holding. As for Diouf I’d be sick as a parrot if we signed that oxygen thief, against Blackburn at home, as I sat shell shocked after witnessing our collapse, Diouf who was at best ineffective stripped down danced to his fans throwing his clothing into the crowd as if they’d won the league. I’m sure this is just his agent trying to salvage his joke of a career. Owen would be worth a gamble, wasn’t he the top goalscorer at the our place a few years back. He’d be great with players like Cox,Bedner, and even our young Kiwi. He could show them how to make runs of the centre halfs if they can imagine them without the walking aides and medical team.
We’ll pull a gem out the bag I’m sure

Why do we have this kind of discussion each transfer window? I know the club likes to keep its cards close to its chest, but I don’t want another dismissal Monday night where nothing happens and we’re left none the wiser!
Carlos Vela “might” be coming; does this mean the target was for “a striker” not a specific type e.g. one who can hold the ball up? Why didn’t the club realise Carew was jerking us around; turned down a move to Hawthorns years ago.
Centre half and right back are still weak areas in my opinion. I don’t want to be negative, but I keep getting a sense of de ja vu. Finally, I wouldn’t mind Diouf coming; I could do with something placed in a car parking bay until I can get there – best position for that waste of space!

To quote BrummieRobWolves-’Wolves are still one of the Top 10 clubs in England,if you take into account history…’.Yeah,ANCIENT history. When doing his research,he used his most up to date book for reference-’The Charles Buchan Boys Annual 1960′.As was said by another wolves fan here recently ‘when we soon take our RIGHTFUL PLACE…’.Just keep on dreaming……….

Last Twenty minutes…. Super Kevin Phillips, not sure if he has burnt his bridges with the hierachy at the albion but the fans love him, he can still do it and he is far and away a better bet than Owen and far cheaper. Plus Super Kev loves the albion. Should never have left.

Reg’ Super Kev, He’s a genius. I would like to think our super Medical Services could stretch his fitness to another couple of seasons. To do that would be a bridge too far, like raising Lazarus.
