Fined for getting off too soon

More from the terms-and-conditions tyranny, writes Peter Rhodes.

Davyd Winter-Bates and his fiancee Emma Clark were travelling by train from London to Southampton when they decided to get off two stops early at Eastleigh.

They were promptly fined £57 each on the grounds that their tickets were not valid for “an intermediate station.”

A South West Trains spokesman says: “It is important passengers comply with terms and conditions.”

Come the revolution, pal . . .

Good on South West Trains for “fining” them, I say. This couple were in breach of the terms and conditions of a special offer ticket they were sold.

When you buy advanced purchase tickets you don’t have the option to change your plans and it is made very clear that they are valid only for the journey on the tickets.

If Emma and Davyd were traveling to Eastleigh they should have purchased a ticket to Eastleigh.

Too many people never consult terms and conditions of any purchase and then assume if they’ve made a mistake that they are still in the right.

    Caveat Emptor!

    Common Sense

All train companies are the same, they charge the earth for anything that is not an advance ticket and if you stray from the T&Cs for an advance ticket you end up paying even more.

No wonder people stick to their cars!
