This week’s report condemning the M6 Toll as a failure inevitably leads to speculation about the 27-mile toll road being taken over by the Government and made toll-free, writes Peter Rhodes.
As an occasional user, I am in two minds. On the one hand, it would be nice to save a fiver.
On the other, the Toll services are possibly the best in the country, being relatively free of football supporters, screaming kids and the usual service-station riff-raff.

Britain won’t ever beat Australia’s service stations. Petrol Stations and food outlets like macca’s, hungry jacks and red rooster charge same prices as in local towns. None of those inflated prices. Also on the freeways we have the ‘Driver Reviver’ outlet’s where you can pull over and have a free hot drink and biscuits. Not great tea or coffee mind you but its an option. Been living in sunny Queensland for 2 years now. Would i ever move back? Why would ya as one of my mates says when asked that question.

I second that. Have used Tebay services often, M6 Westmoreland, Cumbria and it knocks spots off all other service stations i have been to on the motorway network. Its very clean tidy and staff there are polite and very courteus. Problably because it is privatly run and not franchised. 10 out of 10.
