Baggies boys at the World Cup

Hi folks, I hope you are all well and enjoying the sunshine, I would have said the World Cup but if you are like me then you are stewing in your own anger-induced juices, writes Jarrod Hill.

But I am not here to talk about the shambles that our national side has turned into over night I am here to take a quick look at our own Baggie boys out in South Africa.

Marek Cech was a surprise exclusion yesterday for Slovakia. He had a good game in the opening fixture against New Zealand and his team suffered badly against Paraguay after making six changes.

Chris Wood came off the bench for New Zealand and gave the Italian back four a torrid half an hour. His strength and physical presence and sheer determination caused the World Champions a number of problems and he very nearly snatched a winner for the all whites.

His turn and shot on the edge of the box was superb and had me jumping off the settee in expectation of seeing the net bulge, but alas the minnows from New Zealand had to make do with a draw against the Italians, lol, and all this from a nation that still doesn’t have a professional league of its own!

Our other attendee at the World Cup plays for one of my dark horse tips for success this year.

Gonzalo Jara will feel like a new signing come August after being out on the sidelines for the latter part of our league campaign due to injury. Yet he is receiving the perfect preparation for his pre season schedule by playing at the World Cup within an excellent team. Chile play Switzerland today and are my outside tip to make the quarter finals. Gonzalo came on as a sub in their first game against Honduras and although he would have been disappointed not to have made the starting eleven having played in all of the qualifying games I am sure he his glad that he recovered from injury in time to take his place on the plane. I wouldn’t mind him bringing a few of his team mates back to the Hawthorns!!

We have been linked today with our first player in attendance at the World Cup. Webo who plays up front for Cameroon alongside Eto`o has been linked to us through a number of newspaper reports, I would take it with a huge pinch of salt!

Robert Koren is still officially our player until the end of this month and he has the opportunity to end our nation’s hopes on Wednesday.

I am hoping I will be writing about a new signing or two in the coming weeks but with the World Cup and players away on holiday everything is a bit quiet on the western front. Even the rumour mill has ground to a bit of a halt, yet when the rumours start to slow down is usually when we go ahead and sign someone out of the blue, so stay tuned.

Anyway I will be watching Jara this afternoon and cheering him on, if England do get knocked out I am going to adopt Chile as my second team, yep being a Baggie has made me an eternal underdog supporter.

See you all soon.

    JACK the HAT.

    Bomber,
    You’re right, Cech played well.
Young WOOD reminded me of Derek (The TANK) KEVAN
because of his bustling stye of play. The Italians
knew he was there alright. Exactly what I thought
When you said you wouldn’t mind JARA bringing back
some of their team back to the HAWTHORNES. At least he’ll hit the ground running when he gets back.
We have a sound basis for next season, just a few more additions.
    KEEP it comming BOMBER.

Like you, I thought Marek Cech had a good defensive game against the All Whites. They hardly ever penetrated his side of defence because his tackling, marking and positioning was spot on. Must be some other reason.

When are the Kiwis going to give Chris Wood a start, that’s what I want to know. He so nearly pulled off a last minute victory against Italy.

Being a Baggies supporter and an English Kiwi, I have plenty to console me if England exit the first stage, which, I am sad to say, is a very realistic possibility.
