The nightmare goes on for Luke Walker’s family
Thursday 27th May 2010, 1:06PM BST.
It is the stuff of nightmares. The phone rings. It’s an unexpected call from your son on the other side of the world, writes our Dudley man Mark Mudie.
His girlfriend of three years has died suddenly. That, you would think, is bombshell dropped.
But there’s more. He’s calling from a prison cell, suspected of her murder.
The Walker family from Brierley Hill is living out this worst of nightmares, with seemingly no prospect of waking up any time soon.
The predicament of popular Luke Walker and his family has pricked the public consciousness, with more than 3,000 people signed up to a Facebook group proclaiming his innocence.
Widespread disbelief at the allegations Walker is facing is of course at the core of this defiant show of support. Friends vow the Walker they know could not possibly have beaten to death Chelsea Hyndman, the love of his life with whom he was so smitten.
But the headlines have captured a wider audience and the public mood has hardened to indignation as a result of the perceived injustices of a legal system foreign in geography and alien in appearance.
Exposed to the glare of British scrutiny, the practices of the Greek police and courts raise alarming concerns about inconsistencies in standards of justice on the international stage.
The pictures of a desperate looking Walker being dragged across a street and hurried up the stairs of a courthouse made uncomfortable viewing. The revelation he had been moved to a ‘safe zone’ due to bullying was disturbing.
But it is the slanderous statements issued crassly by police following the outcome of an initial post-mortem by Greek doctors which represent the most serious abuses.
The assertion of a police spokeswoman that doctors had found Miss Hyndman’s injuries were “the result of physical violence” inferred, apparently by design, Walker’s guilt. Her subsequent claim “it is said that they often quarelled” was a shameless attempt to stain his character.
A post-mortem carried out by British doctors has since found Miss Hyndman died from a single injury, evidence which could corroborate Walker’s version of events that she fell on a beer glass on a girls’ night out. The silence from the Greek authorities about the latest findings has so far been deafening, and the Walker’s nightmare goes on.
Whatever the ending, British officials would do well to study the script at length to ensure citizens get a fairer deal in future.

Regular readers of this blog will have noticed a lengthier gap than usual between posts. Apologies for the self-enforced sabbatical, introduced while I poured all my energies into covering the election for the E&S. It was a fascinating campaign to follow, from start to finish (and beyond, as those coalition talks dragged on). In Dudley the Tories won three of their four target seats, changing the face of the local political landscape in an election which painted a whole new national picture.

The MP who did cling on, by less than 700 votes, was Ian Austin in Dudley North – but only after a dramatic recount which prolonged the agony for Mr Austin and Tory rival Graeme Brown after a manic month on the campaign trail. You couldn’t have blamed them for cursing when, at 5am, they were told to return in the afternoon..

Letter sent to Foreign Office today, being replicated by hundreds of members of the Facebook pages set up in support of Luke Walker. I have worked on miscarriages of justice in the UK for the last 12 years and there is nothing, during that period of time, that compares with what has happened to Luke.

Dear Mr Hague
I am writing to you regarding the case of Luke Walker, currently being held in custody in Crete, having been accused of murdering his long term girlfriend Chelsea Hyndman.
As an informed member of the public, I have serious concerns regarding the veracity of the Post Mortem undertaken in Crete, which bears no resemblance to the findings of a registered Home Office pathologist in the UK. The original Post Mortem is being used to keep Luke Walker in custody.
I am at a loss to understand, why a country that is a signatory to the Human Rights Act was able to incarcerate a British National without first conducting a thorough investigation into the background of the case.
At the time that Luke was remanded into custody, no evidence, other than the Greek autopsy findings, were adduced, this despite the fact that witnesses were prepared to give evidence during the initial hearing and were prevented from doing so. It would also appear that the Greek police have shown a flagrant disregard to any witness statements that did not support the theory postulated by the Greek authorities.
No prior medical history regarding Ms Hyndman was obtained prior to the hearing, this evidence could have shed further light into the cause of Ms Hyndman’s sad and untimely death.
I am further concerned, given the reputation of young British tourists in Malia, and the animosity there is between local people, the Greek police and the young people that choose Malia as a holiday destination that there is an element of prejudice against Luke Walker simply because of his ethnicity.
I am asking you, as the Foreign Secretary to intervene on Luke Walker and his family’s behalf. I understand the sensitive nature of this request, however, the Greek economy is in collapse, without the 3 million plus British tourists who holiday in Greece every year, that economy would go into further decline and indeed could be the tipping point. Is it too much to ask a country that relies on our goodwill to boost their pockets to treat our citizens fairly?
Yours Sincerely
Penny Mellor

Quote from Penny Mellor on Luke’s facebook page…. Uhhm I am NOT a medical researcher, I research medical records for the defence for free (they often don’t have the time) as a campaigner against false allegations – just wanted to clear that up, it sounds like I am qualified and I’m not, I just have years of experience and know alot about the law and medicine given what I do and how much time I have spent in courts. Apart from that everything else is accurate.
Strange how this woman accuses the Greek doctors of not noting what they are doing and yet she is putting things around with no medical experiance or qualifications…. This could all backfire for Luke if this continues…
Everyone in this case, is doing what the can to free Luke Walker and if you put too much preasure on the Greeks and keep putting them down, they may just dig their heels in and stand by the charge..
Which is not the best for Luke’s case…
