Loan stars wanted at the Hawthorns

Albion blogger Jarrod Hill wants to see loan signings arrive at the Hawthorns to bolster the injury-hit Baggies squad sooner rather than later.

Hi guys and gals I hope you have all had a good week.

The team battled through adversity on Tuesday night to earn a point against a Cardiff team also looking to build on their aspirations of being promoted.

The injury jinx continued as Roman Bednar`s back injury flared up in the run up to the game and had to be replaced by Luke Moore. I reckon Roberto Di Matteo must have walked under a ladder or seen too many single magpies recently as his luck continues to be consistently bad.

After going behind the lads fought back to get a point which could have easily been all three but for some wayward finishing, but if the truth be told a share of the spoils was a pretty fair result.

I have been constantly checking the team’s news boards all week for news of a new arrival on loan. The only rumour still going round is the one regarding our old boy Jason Koumas, but with only one more loan allowed and our injury crisis becoming worse a decision must be made as to which position we focus on.

The problem is due to Jara`s season-ending injury, the lad covered three different roles all of which we now have little or in some cases no cover. Jara`s versatility saw him cover the defensive midfield role, centre back, and right back positions all with consummate ease.

Currently the only cover we have at centre back is Meite, who is injured. For the defensive midfield role we now have no cover for Mulumbu, although it can be argued that in some games we can avoid playing a designated holding midfielder.

Yet my biggest worry is at right back, Zuiverloon`s form has been somewhat hit and miss all season and now we have no cover at all for him. If he wasn’t available for Sunday’s game at Bristol City, who would play right back?

The other point that many on the blogs have made is that young Gianni looks more comfortable in midfield, playing without the burden of having to defend.

At least on the other flank we should have Cech back available in the not so distant future but at right back who do we have?

I know it is not as easy as playing football manager on the pc, but I believe we should be looking for a loan player who can play at right back and cover centre back if required. It would provide cover for two of our weakest squad positions and put pressure on Zuiverloon to keep his place.

I appreciate that many of you will point to our midfield and say that we are short there too, and that by playing five in midfield it further highlights our need for reinforcements.

But we have been led to believe that Giles Barnes is nearing full fitness and Jerome Thomas and Youssef Mulumbu will be back from suspension. James Morrison is another on the road to recovery, but this season may come too soon for him as we have heard little or no news on his progression.

So as I see it if we can only make one more signing I would go for a right back, not sure who is available but that is what we pay the scouting network to do.

Whoever we get in it looks doubtful they will arrive in time for our Sunday lunch time televised clash against Bristol City. I hold nothing but admiration for their manager Gary Johnson and like so many teams in this division; we will need to play well to get the three points.

I just hope we start well, we are starting to develop a bit of a habit of being sluggish starters, but in games where we have scored first we have generally gone on to boss the play. We all know that anyone can beat anyone in this division but if we are to achieve automatic promotion we must keep our unbeaten run going, and preferably collect all three points.

I hope Bednar is fit to play as he has become a key part of making our 4-5-1 formation work, his all action displays and his growing goal tally couldn’t have come at a better time and it is no coincidence that the teams form has also improved.

Oh well have a great weekend and I will keep checking out the E & S news boards to see who we sign.

Come on you Baggies!

    Jarrod,
Agreed that the loss of Jara is a HUGE blow but I understand we are allowed unlimited domestic loans but only 5 in each match day squad? Perhaps someone can confirm this? If correct I think we could now be looking to bring in at LEAST two loan players within the next week (absolutely NO idea who they might be tho!!)

Here it is in a nutshell:

Emergency loans can be taken out at any time between 7 Days after the transfer window closes and 5pm on the final deadline day at the end of March and can only be used by Football League clubs loaning players in from other clubs in England, including those from the Premier League. International switches are not allowed including Scotland and Ireland.

Players can be signed for a maximum period of 93 days on such loans.

Players on emergency loan can be recalled by their own clubs after 28 days have expired, but not before.

Only five loan players (whether standard or emergency) can be named on the team sheet for any one game and no more than four players can be loaned from one club to another in any one season.

Emergency loan signings can be made up to three hours before a league game.

Hope that clears it up. Get ‘em in Robbie.

Agree agree agree—-Zuvi is a disaster at right back this season and with Jara out it has to be a right back. Are we only allowed 2 loans in? Even emergency loans? The one thing you did not mention is the red and yellow card situation.Whilst I am delighted that we stand up and fight —something that did not happen under TM—that doesn’t mean we have to get booked for it. For example Robbie Savage gets away with it every week but we cannot seem to play a game without picking up cards. Perhaps RDM and Eddie need to work on this side of being a professional footballer.

I have been biting my tongue re the card situation. Take a look at the game stats from Tuesday night. We committed the same amount of fouls as Cardiff during the game, they received 0 cards, yes 0 cards, and we received 4 yellows. After looking back through game stats this season it looks to be a trend. I accept some of our players committ silly fouls week in week out, but the card situation seems to effect all of the squad.

Agreed. The yellows are racking up for Olsen, Brunt ,Tamas and Mattock.

Most of the yellow cards Albion players have received this season only warranted a warning from the Referee. You’re right Jarrod we need first and foremost a loan player for the right side of defence.

Thanks for clearing that up rsbaggie and baggies stu.
The only part of the emergency loan situation that is unclear is what constitutes a club qualifying to be able to make an emregency loan. In years gone by it has nearly always been based upon goalkeepers due to the specialist nature of their position, i am not sure we would qualify, lets face it i wouldnt bank on the league or fa helping he baggies, would you?

Yes RB is the main need…Gianna good going forward…. but is so often out of position and cant tackle successfully. We make trouble for ourselves backing off defensively as opponents advance rather than closing them down and denying them time and space. Our website is poor at present to keep fans up to speed on fitness ofCech,Meite,Miller,Morrison etc… we are the paying fans after all and I feel in the dark.. same will the loan situation ? Koumas… is he …isnt he?As ateam we are vulnerable as the cover is very sparse in a few positions and there are 15 games to go plus FA Cup

If we are allowed a couple of loans then a rt back and centre back are priority. We should have kept Martis who had his best game at rt back. On form we should have too much for Bristol however remember Barnsley lets hope our run dosent come to an end there Get past the replay intact then we should have some to return would love to see Ish and Nouble line
up together We may not have the clout of toon but Ashworth deserves a raise for finding these low cost gems.

Dan Ashworth does deserve to receive some credit. He has unearthed some great signings and also helped to negotiate some lost souls (JT and Barnes) into the fold. Apparently he shys away from the lime light, but the fans all appreciate the work he has done. Re Martis again i agree, our squad is looking a tad top heavy, meaning we have more strikers than required, especially as we have switched to 5 in midfield.

I think people are being a bit harsh on Zuvi today.

He’s still a bloody good player, but hasn’t been as consistent as the player who we first saw come into the team at the start of last season. His problem was that he made a massive impression in the first couple of games he played for us.

I do believe we need cover for him and Mulumbu though. As to who that would be though…….not got a clue!

Our starting XI is the best in this league for me, but at times like we’re going through now, we’re struggling to have enough quality in depth when injuries / suspensions kick in.

how about hayden mullins? can play holding role and at the back, sure pompey would want him off the pay role at the moment, and sure he would want to leave…..

He’s the only person I could think of who may be available and suitable.

Surely a loan with agreement to take him permanently at the end of the season would tempt Pompey.

The only other option I thought of was Reo-Coker.

He’s coming back from an injury and in need of match practice, plus he’s played both the holding midfield and right backs roles this season for the Villa.

I dunno how long it’d be til he’s near full match fitness though, so that might stop that in it’s tracks straight off.

I would suspect the delay with Koumas is down to what proportion of his wages Wigan are prepared to pay as he is likely to be a big earner. This could make it difficult for him to move to us or the Geordies who with their wage bill probably cannot afford another high earner.Allthough I was a big admirer of Koumas when he played for us and sorry to see him go , it must be noted that are a lot of negative comments about him on the Wigan blogs and he has not performed this season. I see Zuiverloon is coming in for some stick which is a shame because he did recover his form earlier in the season. If his confidence does not return I’m sure Tamas could play right back once Meite is fit. Not ideal because Tamas is probably the best central defender in the championship and better where he is but at least an alternative.

Both Mattock and Zuiverloon have come in for criticism this season for in different performances but we must not forget ages of both of these players. Mattock is at a new club so still bedding in and has the obvious outside issues but I dont think he has performed as badly as made out.
Zuiverloons main let down for me is his positional sense and timing but this will improve as he gets older.
Saying that we definately need some cover for them and agree a versatile fullback/centre half is required asap.

Personally I am not too concerned by the lack of cover for Mulumbu as we have Dorrans and Koren who can play that deeper role, not in the same way granted but Jonno always played that deeper role and he wasnt exactly known for his smashes and donkey work.
With Barnes, Miller, JT, Mulumbu all coming back over next couple of weeks I dont think we have the ‘crisis’ that some people are going on about.

I’m not at all happy with the criticism Zuiverloon is getting. He’s scoring goals that get us points, he’s a hard worker and skilful too. Every player has some weaknesses otherwise coaching would not be needed. Yes, it’s a good idea to get in loan cover because if he got injured he’d suddenly become the best right back we have, you know, one that gets forward and gets his shots in, covers miles, gets his tackles in…..I look at Jara, Tamas, Thomas et al and believe we should trust our scouts completely. Rarely do they get it even partly wrong. Does anyone think we get yellow cards because we have a few players who are a touch ‘gobby’ with the ref? We are not a dirty team by any means.

Guys i think you will find that only two replies have actually come close to criticising zoovi and to be honest even those are only pointing to the fact his defending can be a little inconsistent. No one doubts his ability, we just dont want to be relying on him staying fit and in form all season with no cover.

      • Albion1879

Im going more from different forums and moans from around the ground aswell. I rate him and think he will develop into a really good attacking full back but acknowledge he has been inconsistent but everyone goes through good and bad spells during a season.

But were all agreed we need the cover which will hopefully be in place before the Derby game at the latest.

Hi Bomber, post 4 called him a ‘disaster’ at right back and that’s what got my back up straight away.

I thought that was really harsh on him personally.

I am still agreeing 100% that we need to get some cover in though.

If post 14 is correct and Owen Hargreaves is available, I’d definitely ask about him coming to the Shrine though as he’d be far too good for the Championship and we’d have to be interested.

It seems were all on the same wavelength re loanees its strange with Gianni when he came he looked excellent in fact in one of his first games v Man u he kept Ronaldo quiet their fans said hes the best rt back to visit
maybe its about confidence. I recall our young
Hodgkiss being destroyed by Thomas ( Charlton)
he was never the same promising player again.
Maybe hes encouraged to go forward but why if
RDM wants to play two wingers. Are there any
loanees at Palace, Cardiff clubs in crisis ?

Sorry guys I have to stick to what my eyes have seen this season—-Zuvi has been very poor—he is always out of position does not defend and is not a right back. he is a lot better in midfield but that isn’t where he ought to be. He was shocking at Reading—-I went with an old mate who can’t get to games as much as he would like and he thought Zuvi was the poorest right back he had seen playing for Albion for years.. I have been to 26 games this season and I regret to say that he has not been close to MOTM once although he looked so promising in his first few games for us last year. RDM must have seen this because Jara was originally brought in as a right back.

Lets hope the lads are focussed Sunday after all this is a banana skin theyre in poor form and were in a good run. An early goal for us will surely have them thinking here we go again. I expect Iwelumo to get a goal consolation hopefully although Jonas will compete as usual reminds me of John Wile and why he isnt capt mystifies me Hopefully we will return with a good performance for the tv
    and three points.
