Baggies’ battle on the beach

Albion blogger Jarrod Hill goes to the Hawthorns a happy man after a late show saw off the Pilgrims after a long old poke down to Plymouth.

As we entered the ground after a little refreshment with Sir Terry (due to the long journey of course) the sun was shining and I foolishly said that it was good conditions for a game of football, and then I saw the pitch.

It looked like farmer Giles had ploughed furrows into it and I feared the game may turn into a bit of a battle, and so it did.

Fair play to Plymouth who are fighting for their lives at the wrong end of the table, they used everything they had to attempt to put us off our game and to some degree it worked.

Roberto Di Matteo made a number of changes, the most surprising one being the resting of our rock in defence, Jonas Olsson. Abdoulaye Meite made his first appearance since returning from the African Cup of Nations and joined a new look defence which also saw the return of Joe Mattock and Gianni Zuiverloon.

It took the lads a while to adjust to the surface and in truth never really looked comfortable, but to be honest unless you were a cabbage patch doll nobody would have been comfortable on it.

Plymouth put us under pressure on occasion but with Tamas having easily his best game yet in a baggies shirt the lads stood firm. Mattock and Zuiverloon struggled the most but did gradually get better as the game wore on.

It may not have registered much of an interest outside of our club but if we are to achieve promotion this season we may look back and realise what an important week last week was.

Two away wins at grounds that can be less than accommodating was truly superb, and although we never hit top form on Saturday we did enough to win, and at present that is what matters most.

The win could have been sealed earlier, however it was a surprise to see Graham Dorrans miss a penalty.

He changed his side and the keeper made an excellent save to deny him adding to his already impressive tally. In fact I was impressed by Stockdale the Plymouth keeper, who had an excellent game. Simon Cox was asked to play the supporting role to Bednar who was again the lone striker, he slowly grew into the role and took his goal well, but I am unsure as to whether it suits his natural game.

The only down side to the game was the red card shown to Jerome Thomas.

It was born out of frustration as he had been the target of some rather robust challenges throughout the game. He will be a big miss in the games to come but it has now presented Andy Slory with an opportunity to show us what he can do starting with tonight’s home game against Scunthorpe. He looks to be a similar type of player with pace to burn and two good feet, I just hope he can chip in with goals in the same way JT has all season.

The news that Marek Cech will be out of action for two to three weeks is a blow as he was playing well, but this is why RDM has built a squad, and when injuries and suspensions come along it is up to the players coming in to do a job and push their own claims for staying in the team.

The sheer amount of games means that players will need some rotating and we need to hope that our squad, not just our first team can push us on.

Roman Bednar has quickly become a key member of the squad again with the switch to playing five in midfield. We have a number of strikers at the club but he is far and away the most suited to playing the lone striker role. This may surprise a few of you but the next best striker in my opinion we have to playing that role is Luke Moore, but his goal to game ratio is much poorer and you will then understand my fear of losing Bednar for any length of time.

He has become the key to making this system work and I just hope the club are keeping him wrapped in cotton wool between games. RDM will want to give him a rest at some time and along with the news that Ishmael Miller will be out longer than first thought; it would explain the loan signing of young Frank Nouble from West Ham.

He is described as a powerful front man with pace and his arrival will give support to our attacking options. He has slipped down the pecking order at West Ham due to the return from injury of Carlton Cole and their January signings of Benni Mcarthy and Mido.

Maybe RDM has realised that without Bednar the new formation possibly wouldn’t work as well and has ear marked young Nouble as a player that can come in and play a similar role to the one Bednar performs so well.

It really would be a perfect week at the club if we can secure three points tonight, I think the first goal will be vital and if we can score early it will force Scunthorpe to play a more expansive game and hopefully result in us going on to win the game. But if this league teaches us anything, nothing is a foregone conclusion and we must be at our best in every game.

Lastly I would like to thank Sir Terry Baggie for securing us our coach tickets for Plymouth, they were sold out but he managed to pull some strings, I’ve asked him if he could get me on the bench for tonight’s game but I am still waiting to hear!

Come on you Baggies.

Great blog, Jarrod. It might seem churlish to raise a couple of slightly negative points after what has been an excellent fortnight. But I wonder what you feel about the following. First, do any posters feel we might have changed our penalty taker for once. Dorrans could not win. Stick to the same side, goalie reads it. Change sides and we saw what happened the last time he did this. I don`t suppose too many teams have had penalties in so many consecutive games and with all of them being filmed and studied by oppostion coaches and goalies, Graham must have been wondering where to place it. Second, JT said he had learned a lesson last time he was sent off. I was disappointed with the challenge which will cost him/us 4 games.

Hi baggie paul, i myself have always taken penalties for illustrious team i have played for, lol.
I have always been of the opinion that even if a keeper knows where you will put it if you hit it hard enough and place it correctly it it would take one hell of a save to stop it. Just my opinion.
Re JT, it was disappointing, but having witnessed it i could understand how it happened. We will just have to cope, and whenever a player misses out through suspension or injury it gives a chance to someone else. Lets hope slory takes it!!

Bomber – if we get any more injuries you might not have to make do with the bench !!

Even with our injuries and suspensions the squad looks to be pretty well covered. I’m interested to see what role RDM has in mind for Nouble – is he a striker down the middle or would he play out wide (like hesky used to do).

Resting olson was a huge gamble – but we can now say it was a stroke of genius. I think Cox is starting to enjoy himself and Slory won’t have a better chance to prove himself in the next 4 games.

Quick mention also for carson who i think is playing some of his best football for us at the mo.

Morning mate, as usual an interesting blog. I like you am wondering if young Nouble has been earmarked for a straight replacement for J.T. I havent seen him play, but as you now General Dan gets free tickets for prem games in the smoke and his opinion is that this ia a great move. he has tremendous pace, is strong on the ball and plays left right and niddle, coupled with the fact that he has match fitness we might find him a surprise replacement for 60 mins tonight with Slory a replacement for the last 30. I cant wait for tonight and as we keep saying its a big game and its been a big week, but just over the horizon are plenty more “Big” ones, not least of all cardiff. Got ot keep our noses to the grindstone and see what happens, this marathon of matches will take its toll on more than just us.

Very true, and on paper we have a stronger squad than Forest. It will be interesting to see how they cope when they get injuries to key players. Oh and whats a niddle? It sounds kinky!!

Excelent point re: this run of games taking it’s toll on others.

Blackpool was a catch-up game, but with the exception of Sheff W at home, I think all teams will play when we play from now on. It may well work to our advantage given our strong underbelly (to use a TM’ism).

Koren, Meite, Morrison (if we ever see him), Slory (by pedigree) and Cox should walk into most CCC teams but I’m not sure the same can be said of Newcastle and Forest….who incidentally both have 2 tricky away games this week.

The one thing we could do without is an FA Cup replay, I think we should go gung-ho at Reading.

The one man who is seemingly exempt from rotation is Graham Dorrans, it’ll be interesting to see how his legs hold up over these next few weeks.

Anyway, good blog Bomber. Onwards and upwards, come on you Baggies!!!

Just had a thought about this years CCC – its really strong this year.

We have lost just one away game all season and done pretty well at home – forest went 19 games unbeaten… and we are STILL only 2nd and 3rd.

I can’t remember a CCC where 3 teams were so consistant – its a hard league and to be second at this stage and looking confident is a credit to RDM and the staff.

I think the high quality of the CCC goes some way to explain why the prem is poorer than before – teams were relegated last season that you would expect to stay up whilst poor teams like Hull managed to stay up.

Paul (post 1) – having scored 4 in 4 penalties there was no way Dorrens was goona hand the ball over. I just think he shoudn’t try to change his style – the way he places it just inside the post is almost impossible to save even if you know where its going.

To be honest i think the ccc is the same this year as it nearly always is. Three strong teams followed by a clutch of teams who are good on their day, but a bit jekyll and hyde. Newcastle with their size of club have added something a little different this season, but other than that i think its the same as any other. Our opinion rarely differs, but i think people say that the ccc looks tough to get out of every season and the quality looks stronger than before, but in truth it remains pretty much the same.

I guess you’re right – its just weird that us and forest have put such good runs together and not made top… I don’t think we were this consistant the year we won it !!

I still think this Prem is the poorest in years tho’.

Not sure on that one. Wolves got up so it can’t have been too hard last season. But everyone seams able to scrap, or at least try to nullify the oppositions strengths this seasons. I do agree the Prem is poor.So many teams in it that send me to bed early watching MOTD.

If you believe our mate Shadrag, the Championship is very poor this year, must be the beer goggles again.

The Championship is always a hard league because the teams that play in it play for the fans and not for the money or the television. You know what I mean. The premiership, or greed league as I call it, is all about money whereas the lower leagues are all about football. Personally, I think the Championship is better than the Premiership for that reason, better football and I’m not saying that because we’re in it.

If we need to change our penalty taker sometimes may I suggest Roman Bednar.
Nouble [Trouble]could do a Miller and Brunt
could patrol the left side.Slory can play wide
-right.Jonas and Tamas can develope into a
    Wile-Robertson partnership.We do need another
young keeper to keep Carson on his toes.Iknow
    he is playing well.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see 4-4-2 tonight with Bednar and Cox up front, Koren and Mulumbu central, with Dozza rested. Brunt on the left with Slory right. Nouble to come off the bench to rest Bednar for 2nd half. Anyway I’m predicting a comfortable 3-0.

    Hello all,

Although i havent commented on this site for a while i fequently read it with interest and thought why not join in the fun!!

Having only missed 1 game away from home this season i felt like saturday was the most rewarding that i have been to – the pitch as already been mentioned was a joke, when i arrived at the ground about 10 mins after kick off i was shocked at the side that the gaffa had put out but still believed we had enough quality to win. However i soon realised that this game wasnt going to be won by footballing ability and quality it was going to be a roll up your sleaves and be counted job, and thats exactly what we did.

Like Jarrod has already stated tonight wont be easy and we all know that they will have 10 men behind the ball at all times and be hoping to go home having stole a point.

we as fans need to be patient, get behind the lads knowing our chances will come and then hopefully we will have that extra quality and take them

i will be in the sportsman from about 3 if anyone fancies a few beers!!

Welcome to the fun, and i gree with what you have said.
Baggietastic has touched on an important topic. If Slory plays wide right then maybe Brunt will be switched to the left. Personally i prefer Brunt on the left and beleive his dip in form is due to playing on the right.
I too drink in the Sportsman, but wont manage 3pm, probably 5.15pm.

I fancy Brunt to score a freekick tonight, ive had my crystal balls out and thats what i saw, it was right by my niddle!!

Iam confident Albion fans will now see the best of Chris Brunt aspecially as Roberto Di
Matteo has loaned Frank Nouble on a monts loan
deal,Iam sure this kid can show all the same attributes as Marc Antoine Fortune.
I hope our mangaer has seen that by playing
Simon Cox in midfield doesnt work and hopefully wont play him there tonight although
    I think he will.
    DI MATTEO`S LINE UP: Carson,Jara,Tamas,
    Olsson,Mattock,Slory,Mulumbu,Cox,Brunt,
    Dorrans,Bednar.

    MY LINE UP: Carson,Zuiverloon,Tamas,
    Olsson,Jara,Nouble,Koren,Mulumbu,Brunt,
    Dorrans,Bednar.

I know Simon Cox scored the goal against
Plymouth but Ive got to say I thought Luke
Moore done more in 5 mins than Cox did in
the entire match.ALBION FANS DONT LIKE LUKE

The penalty was slightly left of centre and saved without hardly moving by their keeper. Graham probably wishes he’d smashed it where he usually does, a foot or so inside the right hand post from where he stands. Jarrod, betcha that it was a girl on the coach bookings! Personally I find it fascinating that Forest and Newcastle are up there with us. Where’s the fun or sport in a walkover? What makes your toes tingle and curl more than the uncertainty of it all? Tonight won’t be a foregone conclusion either. It may well depend on inspired substitutions. Finally, do I now get up in the niddle of the night for a hey-diddle-diddle?

Number 8 I think Moore has been given a fair crack of the whip by most Albion fans. Truth is he shows no heart and no desire two things which no fan will put up with. He has been described to me as a nearly player, he is nearly skillful, nearly quick, nearly brave, nearly, nearly, nearly. Add all this together and he is actually rubbish and after the Forest display should not be let anywhere near the firts team again. I fear he is another Mowbray folly.
