What’s the Slory?
Friday 29th January 2010, 8:54AM GMT.
Andwele Slory? Sorry but I have no information on him that differs from Wikipedia and the other information sites available, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
From what I have read he has experience and anyone that represents the Dutch National side cannot be too bad a player. But what surprises me regarding this prospective deal is the fact he is a winger.
James Morrison is due to return to first team action soon and he will join Jerome Thomas, Chris Brunt, and Filipe Texeira in fighting for a first team place. My question is, do we need another winger?
I appreciate that if a good player becomes available at the right price we should try to do something and competition for places within the team is always good, but I do feel there are other areas of weakness within the squad that could use the investment.
The next few days will be interesting as deals are rushed through before the window closes; I just hope we get the right players in the right positions for us.
Ok now for my rant over Tuesday night’s game.
This may sound like sour grapes, and to some degree it is, but how can the referees association allow Stuart Attwell to continue officiating games at a high level. This is the same guy who awarded the “ghost goal” in the now infamous Watford v Reading game. Disraeli once said there are lies, damn lies and statistics, but the stats from Tuesday nights frustrating game do tell a story.
Ipswich committed 14 fouls and received two yellow cards, in comparison we conceded just 5 fouls yet received 3 yellow cards. His incompetence went even further when he awarded a penalty against Jonas Olsson, I have watched the replay a number of times and for the life of me I cannot see what he has given the foul for. He even booked Olsson for it which is even more baffling.
The whole night was one of frustration and even the last minute equaliser only marginally tempered the feeling amongst fans that we had been robbed. As poor as Mr Attwell`s performance was we cannot blame him for our missed chances and our new found inability to score from set pieces, namely corners.
We had 12 corners in total and never once threatened to score from one of them, add this stat to the fact we had 14 shots on target and 8 off target it helps to paint the picture of a game we should have won. Brunt’s equaliser managed to avert an injustice but with results elsewhere going against us the overall feeling is that we needed more than a draw.
Ipswich also had their chances and the excellent Scott Carson kept them at bay while we pushed on desperately in search of an equaliser, but on the whole we deserved a win, but as we all know, you don’t always get what you deserve in football.
Tomorrows home game against Sheffield United who are another team who have recently returned to form, gives us a chance to get back to winning ways. The games are coming thick and fast and unless Nottingham Forest or Newcastle United suffer a severe dip in form we need to quickly find ourselves on a continued winning streak.
I keep telling myself (and anyone that will listen, and that is not many) that there is a long way to go and our form is not exactly poor, but with a gap now opening up, albeit a small one, between ourselves and the top two my pessimistic tendencies are slowly creeping from the shadows.
However, neither Newcastle nor Forest has suffered a bad run and history suggests that all teams suffer at least one blip during a season. Yet as much as we will all be looking at other results we must concentrate on our own games and ensure we keep gathering points.
It can turn around so quickly and it is important our frustration as fans does not transcend to the players on the pitch which can only be to the detriment of their collective performance. The squad is good enough and with a little good fortune and competent officials we can regain our place within the automatic promotion places.
But, like hilltop baggie optimistically keeps pointing out to me, would it be so bad if we were promoted through the playoffs?
I love his optimism, but I am not sure my nerves would be able to take it.

Nice Blogg. Agree on all those points, but there really IS a long way to go. We won’t lose many playing with this determination. Will be interesting to see if Newcastle drop points in their next games, Leicester, Cardiff, Swansea, Derby. Their fans will turn on them if they lose a couple. As to the potential signing of a winger, I can see a couple going out to make room. Barnett we know, maybe Martis, Tex, hopefully Moore. I think it just points to RDM liking impact players, and out of the wide players you mention, only Thomas is actually doing anything currently. It’ll be a battle tomorrow but if Dorrans is fit I can’t see them coping with our counter attacks.

Playoffs !
I will never forget the tidal wave of emotion that swept us to victory aginst Swansea and Wolves in the respective semi finals.
I will never forget Wembley almost being prematurely demolished by 40 odd thousand people boinging, when we thrashed Vale
And i will never forget feeling so empty, that i thought i had been fasting for a month, courtesy of Derby, on the way home the four of us in the car uttered NOT ONE word.
Come on Baggies. Let me keep my emotions for my kids.

Forever.
That sums it up perfectly.
You had me drooling at the prospect until you mentioned Derby (even though I think that defeat was the best thing that could have happened to us at the time) but the feeling of desolation after the game is something I don’t want to repeat.

I will never forget the abuse the Derby fans gave me & my then 11 yr old daughter at the services on the way home…

Its a goal scorer we need, not a winger.
We need Moses to part the defences!
I’ll settle for play offs.

Morning Mucca, once again an interesting blog. Several points mate, as i said the other night, if we won all of our home matches and drew all of our away games would that be enough. At the moment it doesnt feel so, but in reality it would give us 90 + points and i cant remember a championship side with 90 points that didnt get automatic places, ( someone shoot me down if they know otherwise). I think we are still in with more than a shout, but we need to start capitalising on possession and pressure. On to wingers, once again your right in that there are other positions that need strenghtening, but i must admit to being excited about young Moses, and although i dont think we will get him, any quality addition can only be a good one. I said a while ago on a video blog that i wanted any signings this window to be with one eye on next year in the prem (hopefully) and for me moses is one such signing. Anyway mate see you up the game tommorrow, might even get to the cricket club as well !!!

A very long way to go and can Forest really keep this run going? if they do they deserve to go up.
One thing that is guaranteed is that no matter how many new faces come in, it will be matched by players leaving the club.By signing a new winger may suggest that Morrison is some way off from being fit or Tex may be on his way and with the congestion of fixtures Jerome Thomas has always being injury prone.

Jarrod.
This could almost have been me saying all of this.
Slory, although I never believe we’ve made a signing until I see the picture of him wearing the shirt. I know exactly where you’re coming from but as Robin Brittain said yesterday, it’s all about pace. Thomas is a winger, whereas Brunt and Morrison are wide players. I’ve always thought of Tex as a midfielder who can get wide but it’s not his natural position, a bit like Charlie Cooke used to be. If we could get Moses as well I think we would play him in a more free striking role. Although I still think we’re living in dreamland. He also looks as if he could be worth big money in a couple of years, although you can never tell with a player until he’s proved himself in the big league.
Stuart Atwell. As I said yesterday, a worthy successor to the divine Rob Styles. Premier League refereeing will be safe in his hands. If he needs any tips he can watch the recording of our match v Man Ure last year. I still can’t believe what I witnessed that night.
On the subject of yellow cards. Why are we picking up so many? If anything I’d have said we’re probably too soft for our own good. One thing I have noticed is that a couple of our players do seem to have a go verbally at referees, Brunt and Olsson in particular. Why this should make a difference I don’t know, as it doesn’t seem to affect Man Ure and Chelsea when the entire team browbeat the refs over every decision.
Luck. We seem to have had a bit of a thin period and as these things even themselves out, should be due for a bit. Miller’s chance at Newcastle was typical, I know it wasn’t about luck but it’s a chance he normally wouldn’t miss in a thousand tries and the obverse, the Forest lad’s volleyed goal against us, how many times would that have hit row Z. Not luck, more when the Gods are smiling on you.
One last thing. Wembley. I don’t want to go there in the play offs but I don’t really want to go there in the FA Cup semi-final either as I think one may greatly affect the other. I know we went through this last time and I was in the minority but I feel the same now. Just look at Leeds, one minute looking unstoppable then a couple of good results in the Cup and the wheels have come off. Can we win the Cup? A remote possibility. Can the Cup distract our promotion push? A distict possibilty.
One last, last thing. Hilltop says would it be so bad to go up through the play offs. I wonder if anybody thinks it might not be so bad not to go up at all. I don’t, but I have to admit, I love the CCC.

Bully
I`m with you RE: CCC, but one HAS to aspire to better things.
Once those aspirations are realised, you KNOW
that winning games is going to be infinately tougher.
So our current aspiration is to get back to the minefield of rarer victories, and then aspire to not yo-yo.
The irony of all ironies, we survived for another season in the top flight with undoubtedly the worst manager we have had in our premiership forays.
Oh bytheway Bomber (if you read this)
I saw your blog the other day about the end of season gig. I have no problem digging the old McForever tartan out of mothballs.

Spot on with the winger remark Bully. Since RDM took over, he’s signed Reid (pace), Thomas (skill and pace), taken on Barnes (skill and did have pace) and been linked with Moses and Beckford amongst others. Brunt and Morrison are footballers who can play out wide. What this spells for them I don’t know.
To Jarrod’s point, perhaps in a season where it seems we’re having difficulty opening compact teams up with our languid crab football, maybe RDM feels an Arsenal approach i.e. players with pace and athleticism is what we need to turn these 0 and 1 pointers into 3.
The CCC debate is one we’ve ventured into many times, but perhaps with the financial bubble looking like it might be about to burst, the Premiership might not be as tough in the next few years as it has been in the past. The top 4 have already lost an unprecedented (in recent times) amount of games this season.
Man Utd and Liverpool are having to sell, Pompey are close to going bust, Hull might not be far behind. JP’s long strategy might be about to pay dividends……..if we can make it up there. Which brings us to the other point, automatics please!! Although, I can’t help think Worcester Baggie is spot on.

Warren.
You’ve just fired my enthusiasm for getting back and giving it another go , with as you say the playing field suddenly becoming a whole lot more level.
The goings on at Portsmouth are a great shame for their fans who I like a lot. BUT… It’s hard to feel too sorry when their financial misdeeds of recent seasons have possibly been at our expense for a PL place and definitely a Cup Final appearance.
Do you think that is the real Worcester or is it a shenanigan? Seems very un-Worcester like as he’s usually the ultimate optimist.
Hard game tomorrow but at least it’s not a night game is it? So I’m hopeful.
PS Sir Terry.
Could trews be the answer to your dilemma?

Hi Jarrod
I agree about the information available on this guy. Just a bit concerned that it appears to be a crowd of about 50 in the background, hope that is just a training session !!!
Do they have multi coloured soil where he comes from, those blue and green molehills seem a bit suspect!!!
The way I see it is this. We don’t need any more midfielders. We should be strengthening in areas where we are weaker. As we have pointed out we need some solid cover / support for Olsson and that rare commodity we let leave in Kevin Phillips – a goalscorer.
Now I know KP isn’t up to much anymore and I am not seeking to open that debate again. But he is the kind of player we need to unearth here. That’s why we should make sure we win the race for Moses, because regardless of current form and runs that ourselves, Newcastle and Forest are on – if we lose out of a player of that quality to one of our rivals we will be not be going up automatically. Time to take a gamble JP on someone who in my opinion can only be a good buy for us assuming which it seems that he has the right appetite and attitude for the game.

Hi Guys,
I have been reading through some of the rumours today that are doing the rounds, not just about us but every club. January is certainly a crazy month, and i think the loan with a view to buy is the best deal to get during this window.
For once i am actually quite relaxed re the transfers. I think the best transfer in would be a chimney sweep, horse shoe, and the pilot that landed the plane in the Hudson, yep a huge dose of good luck!!
wbaforever and hilltop see you tomorrow!!

Real Bully why are we living in dream world JP has pulled off some great deals in recent years. Now the word from his adviser “it would be a perfect move to the Albion for the lad” surely that could put us in pole position.Come JP make it happen.

I do live in Holland and want to comment on the dutch player slory, I can assure you that it will be a good player for WBA. I dont know all the wingers who are now playing for WBA, but this is a good player who lost his place in the squad of Feyenoord. Had an injury, small conflict with another player, but he is really fast and can score goals. Good luck to the fans of WBA, hope you will go up again.
