Mick’s tactics are right on the mark

Mick’s tactics are right on the mark

Tactically, Mick got it spot on against Liverpool the other night, writes Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd.

The five spread across midfield ensured that Wolves strangled the Reds creativity and meant that they posed virtually no threat to Hahnemann’s goal.

I think Mick got a bit carried away after the game though when he stated that there has never been a better display from a forward at Molineux.  Perhaps there hasn’t been a more hardworking performance from a striker in a Wolves shirt for a long time, but Kevin didn’t actually score, so sorry Mick I can’t agree with you on that one.

And although it was a superb performance against Liverpool, it is now 400 minutes since a Wolves player last found the back of the net in the Premiership and that has to be a worry.

With the club now run on such a sound financial footing, how much cash are the 3Ms willing to chuck at the January transfer window to help find those goals and ultimately aid our survival efforts?

More than ever, football club’s finances are making headlines on the front and the back of newspapers for a myriad of reasons.

You’ve got the billions in Manchester; with the blue half in the black and the red half in the erm, red.  And big clubs like Crystal Palace, Southampton and Leeds paying a heavy penalty for chasing the dream.

You have John Utaka earning a ridiculous salary for a player of his standard at Portsmouth, a club where the coffers are so thread bare that they couldn’t muster a few hundred quid to keep their website online yesterday.

But despite football being on the brink of implosion, money continues to pour into the game.  And after the demise of ITV Digital and Setanta, it’s amazing that we still have as many professional clubs in existence as we do in this country.

Wolves themselves nearly went out of existence in the early Eighties under the rudderless Bhatti Brothers ship and I remember as a young lad throwing my pocket money in a bucket to help save the club.

After Sir Jack ensured our continued existence, Steve Morgan has stepped in to ensure that we are now one of only a handful of debt free professional English football clubs.

With so many average teams in the Premiership this season and so many in financial meltdown, perhaps now is the time for Steve Morgan to find the cash to add that bit of quality that could mean the difference between survival and relegation.

The final third is obviously where the quality needs to be added.  Our attacking threat against Liverpool only really came from Matt Jarvis on the left flank and an isolated Kevin Doyle through the middle.

As good as Kevin Foley is, he doesn’t give us any creativity down the right and although Nenad Milijas was a bit of a passenger against the Reds he is otherwise our best creative hope in the centre of midfield.

The two recent loan signings from Charleroi came slightly out of left field and only time will tell whether either Geoffrey Mujangi Bia or Adelene Guedioura will prove to be a success or not.

But cut-price signings like these won’t placate the fans or give us a much needed boost that the January transfer window occasionally delivers.

Is it a lack of ambition from the Molineux board or are the club actually willing to spend a few million to keep us on track but are just struggling to bring in the players they have targeted?

Until the transfer window is concluded on Monday, we can’t really judge the club’s dealings.  If we did somehow manage to prise Stephen Hunt and found a decent striker from somewhere, would you see that as good business?

It will obviously be interesting to see if Hunt is included in the Hull team when we visit the KC Stadium on Saturday.  I’m sure he will be playing and I think the visiting Wolves fans should ensure that Stephen knows that we would love to have him join.

Mick may decide to revert back a 4-4-2 and pop Sylvan back in tangent with Doyle, which I think would be a mistake.  Apart from the lack of creativity from the right flank, I liked the look of the new 4-1-4-1 formation, which may be even more effective against lesser teams than Liverpool.

If we can get support up to Doyle a bit quicker than we did midweek, and deploy Mancienne again just in front of the back four, then Mick really could have found a formation that may help us stay up.

It’s another huge game and I fancy us to sneak a result.

And then live on ITV4 on Tuesday, it’s the cup replay against crisis club Crystal Palace.  I listened to Brendan Guilfoyle being interviewed on a certain sports radio channel last night.

He is the administrator in charge of trying to recoup as much money as he can for Crystal Palace by selling players and trying to renegotiate contracts and sell-on clauses.

He was also the man who had to inform Neil Warnock that he couldn’t play Victor Moses against Newcastle the other night just in case he picked up a knock, I don’t think I would have fancied that job!

Brendan went on to tell the listeners that Victor Moses will be sold in the transfer window, as will any other players who could demand a decent transfer fee.

As much as I hate to see any club suffer, this obviously means that Tuesday’s game has just got a lot more winnable!

Anyway, enjoy the game at the weekend.  I’m off to ask Gareth at SportingBet just who gave him permission to paint the Wolves dugouts baby blue!

UTW!

Am I the only one who was not satisfied with a point against a very very poor Liverpool team?? I don’t care who we play we should never start a game with 6 defenders!?

Foley is a waste of time playing right midfielder, he offers nothing. Halford is not great but he offers more plus his long throws.

Liverpool were there for the taking and as usual this season, negative tactics have cost us. Well they should cost MM his job now. Now we have to beat Hull and there is no way that will happen.

So thanx MM, championship here we come. But at least we have 2 new signings from Belgium division 6.

You must remember, many happy clappers see failure as success. When are we going to score a goal. Draws are no good now we need wins, simple enough MM. We need a left back urgently, this will then give Jarvis more time up front, instead of covering for MM son.

Marked – you are totally right, anything we get off a “top four” side has to be taken as a bonus.

I would be far more upset if we play Hull with the same formation, that game is massive this weekend.

Will some people get it into their thick heads that we are a newly promoted side with a single aim this season of staying in this division. Where you lot think we should suddenly be beating Liverpool etc on a regular basis get it from is beyond me.

Totally agree with you mikeqb, McCarthy sent out a defensive side to play a Liverpool team on reputation alone, not on current form. Liverpool were there for the taking (much the same as Man Utd were at Old Trafford), another 2 points lost imo. Doyle was outstanding, but he cannot carry this side on his own. SEB is not the answer, not fit enough, not quick enough (physically or mentally} and simply out of his depth in the prem. Quality reinforcements required urgently upfront and on the right side of midfield, why continue to play Foley out of position, everybody can see he can’t play the position except for thick Mick. Not that bothered about a cup run as I believe most Wolves fans would say/ feel the same

More annoyed at the ‘arrogance’ of Jez Moxey at his ‘Job done’ remarks at the start of the season

Imv – we have needed a left back who knows how to play in ‘tandem’ with the left sided midfielder – perhaps Dan Fox from Celtic or even Scott Dann who signed for Blues instead because we were not prepared to pay a little more for the quality

The same can be said about the Hunt fiasco – which at the time – Jez logic suggested that the Surman signing was the more ‘prudent’ approach – No disrespect to Andrew Surman but the lad is unproven and never played at this level – another one for the’future’

Far better imv we moved for Hunt with Doyle at the time but now far too late
As Phil Brown has stated recently ‘I read Jez Moxey’s comments in his programme notes about not spending over the odds for a player (Hunt) that is only worth £3m’ and then he offers £4m??? So much for Moxey logic???
Phil Brown went on to say that ‘other’ clubs are putting in bids – which has now effectively started what may turn out to be a bidding war – that imv Wolves will be best looking elsewhere at the likes of Chris Eagles at Burnley

Jez Moxey’s false economy of being ‘penny wise/ pound foolish’ has alot to do with our squad being filled with ‘project players’ and with comments from the young Scottish lad – who scored againts us at the Mol from Wigan on why he ditched signing for Wolves at the last minute to sign for Wigan – It must make even the most ardent Wolves fans (who never have a bad word to say against the club) to sit up and start wondering what on earth is being said to the potential signings by the club???

Finally, a striker who is Prem Proven is required and hopefully not a knee jerk reaction that is brought in to show the fans that Jez is ‘working hard’

I have to respond when I see your comment about Jex Moxey’s “false economy” – it shouldn’t take Nathan Lloyd to remind you of what spending over the odds for dodgy goods did for this club between 1979 and 1986! Don’t you remember those days, or have you airbrushed it all out of your memory? Pick up today’s papers, read about West Ham switching their lights & heating off to save money, because they’re in schtuck, and Pompey can’t even run their club website because the broadband bill can’t be paid. Have you never heard the tales of Wolves players having whiprounds to pay the milkman in the 80′s? THAT’s false economy, as is Hull paying over the odds last year – in debt. West Ham, Pompey – in debt for the same reasons. Wolves WILL survive this season and it won’t be because we’ve paid £4m for an over-rated winger knocking thirty, and we’ll still be debt-free. I used to loathe Moxey once upon a time, but now he’s one of the most important men at the club. So before you berate him for not having sanctioned £20m worth of window signings and jeopardising our future financial footing, remember the words “Andy Gray” and “John Ireland Stand”.

nonsense a complete rewriting of history. The financial problems in the 80s was largely due to a massive increase in interest rates by the then Govt which put pressure on the club to pay for the John Ireland stand. As with most falls from grace we failed to invest in decent players and then got relegated. We then got shafted by the administration process which for reasons beyond common sense chose the Bhattis rather than a Sir Jack backed group. The best way to run down a football club is to not invest in the team. Now go back to the golf course with Moxey.ps Andy Gray was paid for by Steve Daley

Chris, I completely agree about some of the reasons you mention above (interst rates etc) being the real reason for the 80′s down fall, but, do you not accept that in any time of financial crisis (and football is so very obvioulsy on the brink of one) that a prudent approach is not only required, but essential ? The dangers in the 80′s may have been soaring rates, but aren’t the dangers of today the unrealistic wage bills ? The danger of a drop in TV income ? The danger of sponsors walking away ? The dangers of buying against projected season ticket sales, that evetually do not materialise ?

You need an approach for the times, and as Ive said before, everything that the M’s have said they wanted to achieve, they have done to date, and thats why Ill keep clapping.

But in the Marshall era we failed to sign Francis Lee from Bolton over 5 pounds a week in his pay packet, so he went to Man City instead, the same with Alan Ball from Blackpool. The protracted negotiations for Mike O’Grady, Steve Kindon etc etc. History repeats itself with Wolves. Look how long the transfers of Daley & Gray took, although that could have been because of John Barnwells car accident. We have to stop beating the drum of the past as this is all you will get is repeats of the past. Clubs are in financial meltdown because of the financial chill sweeping through the game & I’m sorry to say but any club that goes to the wall because of their foolish dealing deserve no more. I can’t help but feel for Crystal Palace though because the Football League didn’t hesitate to strip 10 points from them for failing to pay their players & going into admin. It makes you wonder what deal the FA have done with Portsmouth because this is a club that deserves & should be in admin with there financial crisis this season….you could probably add West Ham & Hull to that list…then we would have the relegation places filled…oh what a feeling that would be!! Surman may be a wonderkid for the future; but Wolves need someone in the team now that can add the supply that strikers need – Now we are trying/ hoping that Hull want to sell to us and again hope that no-one else is going to come in and pip us to his signing – The Hunt deal should have been done when we signed Doyle and it is a false economy to sign a cheaper option who doesnt make the first team choice regularly

All your ramblings of past events are clearly incorrect – Yes being prudent is necessary; but going too far in the opposite direction is just as bad

Hull and Pompey are going down, and will continue to drop through the leagues until they bottom out and clear their debts.

Draws against the lowly teams are not enough, we have to score points, boasting about not being in the relegation zone when the only difference is one goal in the goal average is so pathetic that only a Happy Clapper could do it! See postings this week.

We need a goal scorer and a proper left back, so that Jarvis can concentrate on his attacking role and even get attacking support from the LB!

Against Tottenham and Liverpool Matt Jarvis drew admiring comments from the press, he is still one of our great hopes if he can revert to flying winger and not fast defender. Maybe playing Mancienne in front of the defenders can provide sufficient support for S. Ward, but it wouldn’t protect him from a flying right winger who will always take him apart, as we saw against Wigan.

Incidentally, why not play Jarvis on the right, he only switched to the left when Kites joined, and Foley (a great right back) will never have the pace or skill to provide the forwards with the service that they need so badly.

Jarvis was only ever brought in as a left winger and it’s fair to say that whenever he’s switched to the right during games, he’s not exactly set the world alight as we know he can do on the left.

Thought he was superb against Liverpool, gave Carragher what must have been one of his hardest games this season. Delivery was good too, for both Doyle’s first-half chance and Foley’s header.

Perhaps he is one of those unfortunates who will never recapture his touch after injury !
On the other hand if his lack of success is due to a lack of service then whose fault is that? having been prepared to spend a club record fee to obtain him should’nt the management have have sorted out a way of playing to his strengths by now ?

And yes Doyle was good, but not a patch on Bully in his hay day!

Right I disagree about you saying it be a mistake to change the formation. Goals wins you matches and we have not scored in 400 minutes of league football. Ebanks needs to play and I think he will score on saturday and I think wolves will go onto win the game. However the next 3 days of the transfer window is critical for Wolves. If we do not strength in key weak areas which are:-
Left Back, Creative Midfield and a Striker then we are going to struggle to reach that 40 point mark.

Left Back Fox or Naylor from Celtic
Midfielder I would love Wolves to nab O’Hara.
Striker “They are like gold dust at the moment, I would love Keane to come, he and Doyle play up front for Ireland and it would be great to see them in tandem. But realistically I cant think who! I think money could have been spent better on better players and the likes of hoffs who could not kick a ball down an entry and for 2.5 million a total waist of money, why aint thick mick been sacked for this.

So far McCarthy hasn’t given the Hoff a chance. Maybe he just doesn’t like what he sees in training, but I think that is the same problem we have with Doyle and Ebanks – no service from midfield.

There lies our problem, and that is what needs solving and why Hunt is so important to us.

How pathetic that the extent of our aspirations are a home draw against a poor liverpool side. All the wild cheering at the end of a poor game with a negative approach from us says a lot. As bad against man city when we left out the only two players in jarvo and milijas who were likely to create anything.I almost hope we go down – how else are we going to get rid of mm and move on?

Nathan Good blog I also think MM did get it right, but I really thought we should have won the game but having said that walking back through the tunnel there was quite a buzz of excitement at what was seen, but we have to start scoring goals and hopefully that will happen at Hull on Saturday.

Everyone keeps going on about the January transfer window and the fact that we have two players bought from Belgium that nobody knows but surely we must see them play before we can critisise.

Regarding buying players, I don’t think the problem is buying the players that is the easy part, the problem is the stupid wages that some of these players expect and something should be done about this. Like you said you remember putting your pocket money in a bucket to try and save us because of the Bhatti brothers we really do not want to be going there again but that is now in the past.

I am convinced that we will stay in this division but that it will be only just above the line.

I can understand some of the fans frustration because I do get frustrated as well especially when you see the poor games like Birmingham, Wigan, Crystal Palace but on the whole I don’t think we are that bad, like I have said we need to start scoring goals and to me we must start trying from outside the area cause it aint working in the area.

    In Wolves I believe.

Calm dow GAMBLOS… This Saturday is a massive game lets pass comment after it—

We need to win and thats it…Liverpool were well matched by our Lads lets hope they play that well saturday…..
We are in trouble Yes but still time and lets face it I do not think we are going to get renowne and known quality to play at the super-dome inspite of MM efforts and I do think he makes an effort…..

Nathen you are like the winter wind with your comments … Tuesday Jodi was outstanding in my book and Doyle energy personified BUT Mate…. You stated Jody would not make same in Prem and inspite of Doyle’s energy mate we are not scorring GOALS and thats what counts………keep the Faith Crazey Dave

What ever anyone says about this season if we stay up or not our club has not done enough for us as fans, we have been let down again and given false promises by morgan.
The point against liverpool doesn’t even make up for the 3 we should have taken from wigan, we didn’t turn up against wigan at-all, when against a team around us that we actually needed to, however liverpool was a good result for us with good displays from doyle, zubar and wardy, we need to get zubar into the center of defense before its to late (thats if it aint already) craddock had done well so far but is to old and will make more mistakes as the season goes on because of his lack of pace and age.
Big big big game against hull tomorrow come on wolves and lets just hope hunt doesnt play !!!

The normal recipe for staying up is to make sure the home games are won and at least draw away. Looking at our next three home games we have Spurs, Chelsea and Man United – not much joy there!!!

Our next three away games are Hull, Birmingham and Bolton – does anyone see three wins there???

I guess MM will “rest” ten players again when we play Man United!!!

It is difficult to see where the goals are going to come from at the moment. Doyle is being put in an impossible position and Milijas is being bypassed by all the air balls which deny any creative attacking play.We could go and spend 30 million on a top striker but it makes no difference if the player gets no service.

I dispare at the level of football intelect that is currently passing through the Wolves turnstiles.

How any supporter can continually bait Mick McCarthy all season when in three years, he has single handedly took over a team that couldnt field a full squad, won the Championship and got us back where we belong. Now we are currently scrapping, as expected, at surviving our first season in the Premiership.

He has acheived more than any other Wolves manager has achieved within the last 25years.

Id also like to remind people that among the avalanche of clubs currently going to the wall, we too were going out of business in the eighties and that hurt. Now we are a club that is in a minority for actually running in the black!

    Yet in the face of the facts, in just 20 posts we get comments like;

‘the club has not done enough for us fans’
    ‘penny pinchers’
    ‘hope we go down’
‘why aint thick mick been sacked for this’
    ‘it’s a disgrace’
    ‘its the cheap option again’
‘Doyle has proven to be an abject failure to date’
    ‘championship here we come’
‘many happy clappers see failure as success’
‘Im annoyed at the ‘arrogance’ of Jez Moxey’

    Im disgusted with it all.

    Doughnuts all of ya.

A point against Liverpool is a good result. Yes we could have possibly been a bit more adventurous but we would have opened ourselves up for the likes of Gerrard to take us apart. At the end of the day Doyle was the best player on show and Jarvis caused them problems.
We must not lose against Hull and yes the Brummie Wolves – who do not go to games and should be watching Blues or Villa will be there! The line up that I would go with is:-
Hahnemann Zubar Berra Craddock Ward Jarvis Henry Milijas Bia Doyle Vokes. I cannot see this happening but this is what it should be.
In terms of whether we have spent enough? It is obvious that we have been trying and I assume Adam Johnson was the big bid we had in but at the end of the day he will end up at Man City or Chelsea. 2 more signings please!

      hammer,

What made you miss Foley out for the RB position? He was our player of the year in that position, and I don’t think that anybody else has played the position better than him this season.

After Foley returned from injury, Mick has been trying to use Foley’s class to solve problems elsewhere, but he is an out-and-out defender, not a half back and if he spent a year with the Red Arrows he still wouldn’t be a flying winger!

it you take liverpool and our recent form, a draw for us after losing to wigan, man city was a very good result. I think MM got carried away with doyle, he led the line very well, but strikers are there to score goals and he didnt.
Like most newly promoted sides we are struggling to score goals. I read in another article than MM beleives that with SEBs poor form, even if he doesnt get another striker in, he has enough with iwelumo, vokes, keogh, hoff.I know a manager must always support his signings but i’m very worried if he actually beleives this nonsense,as none of these look like premiership strikers specially keogh and iwelumo..vokes has potential thoughand to be fair we havnt seen much of the Hoff to judge.
Oh maybe my memory is bad Nathan Lloyd but wasnt it our old board led by John Ireland that led us on the verge of bankruptsy in the first place and the Bhatti brothers, along with the Doug that saved us from extinction? Events like this should never be forgotten or misquoted, no matter how badly they ran the club.

Sorry John but your memory has let you down on this one.Ireland went in the mid70S when McGarry was sacked and we were relegated.Harry Marshall took over and we did ok for 5 years or so but he built the new stand half a mile from the pitch. In the early 80′s with high interest rates and a power struggle after another relegation,a certain Doug Ellis became our Chairman . He immediately pulled the plug and called in the Administrators.A no of parties were interested in buying the club. With 24 hours to the deadline it looked that Sir Jack and his group were going to win ,but the Bhattis came in late with a higher offer and won the deal at the last minute. The winners were the banks who were paid £1 for each £1 of debt. The press dressed it up that the Bhattis had saved the Wolves, but that was all nonsense.

I am shocked at Mick mccarthys remark about kevin doyle, I hope Bully was not listening,if Mick thinks that Doyle is as good, if not better at centre forward than Bully, Murray,Farmer, Wilshaw,Swinbourne, Curran, Dougan, Richards, etc etc and many more greats who have graced the molineux turf, then he should immediately apologise to all true Wolves fans, this is no way to instil trust into a manager or a team, this present team including Doyle are not good enough to clean the boots of many past Wolves Greats, be it right that we support them in the present league, you still have a lot to learn Mick both as a manager and letting your mouth into gear before using your head.
