Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Job seekers are not helping themselves

Why are so many people just not able to apply for a job properly? writes Charlie Cashdan.
No wonder some of them struggle to secure an interview judging by some of the responses I get to my job advertisements.
I regularly advertise for staff via an internet site and I am perpetually shocked by the poor responses I receive.
Granted the work is only temporary but surely that doesn’t justify the shocking grammar, spelling and just plain silliness people’s responses are littered with.
Maybe it’s because they are replying by email, rather than letter. But all the same, come on job seekers, at least write me an email that looks as if you care and have at least bothered to check for typing errors, grammar etc.
Why do people have such awful grammar? Why on earth do they use text speak when applying for a job? Why don’t people understand capital letters? They either don’t use them at all in a whole paragraph or just stick a few random ones in mid sentence.
One person who emailed me started every single word with a capital.
Here are some actual examples taken from real emails sent to me in response to a job advertisement: (This is exactly how they were written)
‘Hi ive just come a cross your job im wondering if there is stil eny jobs going im flexabalal out going and very chaty if u have eny jobs going u can phone me on … u can contact me bye email’
‘want to work in ur company’
‘Im am a 17 year old hard working with a bubbly atuchude with people’
‘Very Keen on the Consultant job’
‘since my last postyion i have been taking time out’
‘I think ill be good at this job and would be availala for it’
‘hi, im willing to do this job’ – gosh, that’s big of you!
‘please fined a attached cv’
‘hi there i was wondering if you have found some one to work has am avalible’ Clearly available is a very tricky word!
‘i have attached my cv and o look foeward to hearing from you’
‘i would be available and verymuch interested in mentioned the position’
‘I live at coperation street’ It’s meant to be Corporation Street, a bit worrying if someone can’t even spell the street they live on – on, not at!
‘i have alot of customer experience and wuld like to know more’
‘pls let me know if u got my cv’
Am I just being an old-fashioned fuss pot? Do I just need to chill out about these things?
My other pet hate is people with silly email addresses. Ok, its fine for personal use but if you are applying for jobs why not just set up a standard formal email to use instead?
Here are some examples of jobseeker’s emails:
smileydood@
babesonstrike@
princessfiona@
crayzee_babe@
buzzinbabez@
badgirlslaura@
My personal favourite was evilnuela@ . . . When I read her CV she spoke of her love for ‘anything that is gothic or Halloween like’. Full marks for honesty but the whole evil thing was rather off putting! I don’t really want my staff to be evil, friendly, outgoing, confident yes – evil, no!
Ok, go on, all write comments about what a boring old mare I am and how I shouldn’t be so judgmental but surely someone out there must agree that a person should try to make the best possible impression when applying for a job, at least use a spell checker and re-read an email to spot typing errors. Gosh, I really am turning into my Dad!

At last, someone who cares about the response to advertisments for vacancies, I could not agree more

Don’t be judgemental of the poor formatting of CVs and covering letters from job agencies on behalf of candidates. I’ve been on both sides of the table and seen how these agencies try to ‘normalise’ the style of the CVs, often destroying many hours hard work in the process. My advice to candidates sending documents electronically is to convert them into PDF format. At least that way, you stand a chance of it being received and viewed as you intend it.

Could not agree with you more. Using text speak, no spell-checker and ridiculous grammar just stinks of ignorance. If I got an email from one of my friends with grammar as bad as the emails you have mentioned I would judge them for it. Everyone should aspire to communicate properly, it is the basis of any career or education.

I agree with the points you’ve made, but I’m not sure you’re the right person to make them. You’re so busy being critical of others’ grammar, but if I was to judge the author of this entry based solely on its content, I would assume it was written by a student in the sixth grade. Who taught you how to punctuate?

If you are a decent person and spent most of your life grafting to earn a living and then made redundant, it is appalling to comment on how people are made to apply for employment.
For people of middle age who are proud and still want to work and have little knowledge of computers and emails etc, the job centre’s only give you the details of job agencies, who are awash with applicants.
I have paid into the system for forty two years and taken nothing out,but come to have anything in return!it is a joke! Whatver happened to cold calling and interviews ?
To receive any benefit you can be anyone, except a decent hard working chap who has only ever paid into system. Don’t talk to me of free hand outs!they do not exist for people who have paid their dues.
