A Smethwick man was arrested by police for swiping the number plates from a parked van…blissfully unaware he’d singled out an unmarked police vehicle!

The 50-year-old was spotted by officers on patrol as part of Operation Trivium − a West Midlands Police led clampdown on foreign criminals − unscrewing plates from the vehicle in Coventry last night.

Officers followed him a short distance where he was seen discarding the number plates before being arrested by officers who found him concealing a screwdriver and roll of bin-liners.

Two men and a woman have been found guilty of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs after more than £1million worth of ecstasy was discovered by police in Staffordshire.
